If msvcp110d.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, the program is requesting the Microsoft Visual Studio 2012 debug C++ runtime. msvcp110d.dll is not an ordinary Windows system DLL, and the normal Visual C++ Redistributable usually does not contain this debug-suffixed file.
That distinction determines the correct repair. A retail game or application may have been packaged with a Debug build by mistake, while a program you built yourself may simply be running on a computer without the matching Visual Studio development files.

Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing Windows, record the following:
- The exact filename in the message.
msvcp110d.dllandmsvcp110.dllrequire different reasoning. - The program or game that displays the error.
- Whether the error appears during installation, when launching, or after an update.
- Whether you built the program yourself.
- Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Whether antivirus recently quarantined a file.
- Whether the problem began after an update, driver installation, or software removal.
Common messages include:
- “The program can’t start because MSVCP110D.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because MSVCP110D.dll was not found.”
- “MSVCP110D.dll was not found.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “MSVCP110D.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- A bad-image error with status
0xc000012f.
Do not begin by downloading a DLL from a search result. First determine whether the application is incorrectly requesting a debug runtime or whether the installation simply lost one of its files.
What msvcp110d.dll is
The filename identifies the runtime family:
msvcprefers to Microsoft’s C++ standard-library runtime.110identifies Visual C++ 11.0, which belongs to Visual Studio 2012.- The final
dindicates a Debug build.
Microsoft documents this file under the Microsoft.VC110.DebugCRT files and lists it separately from the release runtime in its multiple-computer Visual Studio build environment documentation.

The file is associated with Microsoft Visual Studio 2012 and is published by Microsoft. It is not normally supplied as a protected desktop Windows component. Windows 10 and Windows 11 do not generally install it merely because the operating system is present.
The release counterpart is msvcp110.dll, without the final d. These are different dependencies:
| Filename | Meaning | Typical situation |
|---|---|---|
msvcp110.dll |
Visual C++ 2012 release C++ runtime | A properly built release application |
msvcp110d.dll |
Visual C++ 2012 debug C++ runtime | A Visual Studio Debug build or incorrectly packaged component |
A debug build can also require companion files such as msvcr110d.dll. Restoring only msvcp110d.dll may therefore expose another missing dependency immediately afterward.
The quickest fix for a normal program or game
If you did not build the affected program yourself, treat this first as an application repair problem.
1. Repair or reinstall the affected application
Use the program’s own installer or Windows’ repair option before attempting system-wide changes.
For an installed Windows application:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the program again.
If there is no Repair button, select Reset only if you understand that it may remove the application’s local settings or cached data. If the error remains, uninstall and reinstall the application from its official installer or store.
For a traditional desktop program:
- Press
Win+R. - Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Repair, Change, or Modify.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
Microsoft describes these options in its guide to repairing apps and programs in Windows.
A repair worked if the program launches without the msvcp110d.dll message. If the same message returns immediately, the installer may be restoring a Debug build or may be failing to install one of the application’s dependencies. In that case, contact the application vendor or obtain a newer, correctly built release version.
2. Verify a game’s files
For a game, use the launcher’s file-verification feature. This can restore files removed by an interrupted update, damaged installation, or quarantine event.
Typical locations are:
- Steam: Open the Library, right-click the game, choose Properties, select Installed Files, then choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Epic Games Launcher: Open Library, select the three dots beside the game, choose Manage, then select Verify.
- EA app: Open the Library, select the game’s three-dot menu, then choose Repair.
The exact wording can change with launcher updates, but the function is the same: compare the local installation with the launcher’s copy and download missing or damaged files.
Restart the game after verification. If verification repeatedly restores the same file, check antivirus protection history before launching again. The game may contain a component that security software keeps removing, or the installation may be distributing an inappropriate Debug build.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware match3. Reinstall from the official source if repair fails
A complete reinstall is appropriate when:
- The program was interrupted during installation.
- The error began after a failed update.
- The launcher reports damaged files repeatedly.
- The program folder contains a mixture of old and new files.
- The application was moved manually between drives.
- The installer was interrupted by antivirus or another security product.
Uninstall the program, restart Windows, and install it again using the vendor’s current installer or launcher. Do not copy msvcp110d.dll from another computer into the program folder unless you are the developer responsible for that application and have confirmed that the file matches the exact toolset and architecture.
For a retail application, a reinstall should normally deliver a Release build. If the newly installed application still requests msvcp110d.dll, the problem is probably in the vendor’s package rather than in Windows.
Check antivirus quarantine before allowing anything
Antivirus software can remove a DLL after detecting it, or an incomplete installation can leave the program without a required file. However, the existence of a missing-file message does not prove that antivirus caused the problem.
To check Microsoft Defender’s records:
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections involving the affected application.
- Expand a detection to inspect its path, name, and action.
- Restore a file only when you have confirmed that the application came from a trusted official source and the detection is a false positive.
- Reinstall or verify the application after restoring it.
Microsoft explains the risks and controls in its documentation for Protection history in Windows Security.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not choose Allow on device for an unknown DLL simply because its name matches the error. A restored malicious file can put the computer at risk. When the program is legitimate, reinstalling it from the official source is generally safer than restoring a loose file.
Do not install the wrong Visual C++ package
The ordinary Visual C++ 2012 Redistributable contains release files such as:
msvcp110.dllmsvcr110.dll- Related release libraries
It does not normally contain:
msvcp110d.dllmsvcr110d.dll
Microsoft’s Visual Studio 2012 redistribution documentation distinguishes the redistributable release runtime from the Debug runtime.
When the Visual C++ 2012 Redistributable is appropriate
Install or repair the Visual C++ 2012 Redistributable when the error names the release file msvcp110.dll, without the final d, or when the application’s official documentation specifically requires the VC++ 2012 release runtime.

Microsoft provides separate x86 and x64 packages. Its latest supported Visual C++ downloads table explains the available architectures and older redistributable generations.
Choose the architecture that matches the application
The package must match the application, not simply the operating system.
- A 32-bit application needs the x86 runtime.
- A 64-bit application needs the x64 runtime.
- A 64-bit version of Windows can run 32-bit applications, so a 64-bit computer may still need the x86 package.
If you are unsure which architecture the application uses, check its vendor documentation or installer requirements. If the program is supplied in both x86 and x64 editions, install the package matching the edition you installed.

If you built the program yourself
A Debug executable is intended for development and testing. Running it on another computer requires the matching Visual Studio 2012 debug environment or the exact debug files from the same toolset in a controlled test setup.

The safest long-term solution is to produce a Release build.
Rebuild the application in Release mode
In Visual Studio:
- Open the solution.
- In the configuration selector on the main toolbar, select Release instead of Debug.
- Select the correct platform, such as Win32, x86, or x64, according to the target computer.
- Open Build.
- Select Clean Solution.
- Select Rebuild Solution.
- Rebuild every native project in the solution.
- Rebuild native third-party dependencies that were compiled with a different toolset or configuration.
- Test the resulting executable on a clean test machine.
Do not rebuild only the main executable while leaving a native plugin or library in Debug mode. A Debug plugin can continue to request msvcp110d.dll even when the main program is a Release build.
A release deployment should use the appropriate release redistributable or an application-local runtime deployment that complies with Microsoft’s distribution terms. Microsoft states that debug versions of the Visual C++ runtime are not redistributable for ordinary commercial distribution in its guidance on using the Microsoft C Runtime with user-mode drivers and applications.
Controlled internal Debug testing
If you are testing your own Debug build on another development machine:
- Confirm the executable’s architecture.
- Confirm the Visual Studio toolset used to build it.
- Install or repair the matching Visual Studio development environment.
- Use the matching debug files from that toolset.
- Keep the test machine and files under your organization’s control.
- Do not package those debug files with a retail application.
Microsoft documents debug files under locations similar to Debug_NonRedist\x86 and Debug_NonRedist\x64. The exact location depends on the Visual Studio installation and target architecture.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA Debug build may require more than msvcp110d.dll. If the next error names msvcr110d.dll or another debug library, that confirms the executable and its dependencies were built for the Debug configuration.
Check for a mixed Visual Studio toolchain
Libraries from OpenCV, SFML, plugins, exporters, and other native frameworks can be built with different Visual Studio versions or configurations. A project may compile successfully on the developer’s computer because the required debug libraries are installed there, then fail on another machine.
Review:
- The main project’s Runtime Library setting.
- Each native library’s build configuration.
- The target architecture.
- The Visual Studio toolset version.
- Whether a third-party dependency was supplied as Debug-only.
- Whether the deployment includes all required release dependencies.
A library built with Visual Studio 2012 Debug settings should not be treated as a normal redistributable release component. Rebuild it in Release mode or obtain a release binary compatible with the application.
Confirm the architecture before moving files
Architecture errors are common when a user has copied a DLL from another computer.
Recommended Free Tools
A 32-bit process cannot load a 64-bit copy of the runtime, and a 64-bit process cannot use a 32-bit copy as its replacement. The file must match the process that loads it.
On 64-bit Windows, the directory names are also easy to misunderstand:
System32is associated with 64-bit system files.SysWOW64is associated with 32-bit files under Windows’ 32-bit compatibility layer.
This naming is counterintuitive, and manually placing a file in either directory is not a general repair method. Microsoft explains the behavior in its documentation for the file-system redirector.
For an application that uses application-local dependencies, the correct location may be the application’s own installation directory. Microsoft describes how Windows searches for DLLs in its documentation for dynamic-link library search order. That does not mean a user should copy an arbitrary DLL there. The application vendor or developer must supply the correct, licensed, matching runtime.
Why “the specified module could not be found” can be misleading
Windows may report that a DLL was not found even when a file with that name is visible in the application folder. The named DLL may itself depend on another library that is missing, damaged, or the wrong architecture.
For example, the application may find msvcp110d.dll, but loading can still fail because:
- A companion debug runtime is absent.
- A dependent native library is missing.
- The file belongs to another architecture.
- The file is damaged.
- The file came from a different Visual Studio build.
- A required application-local dependency was removed.
This is why copying only the named file often changes the error rather than fixing it. If an application vendor supplied the program, use its repair or verification process. If you built it, inspect the complete dependency set and rebuild all native components consistently.
regsvr32 does not apply to this file
Do not use regsvr32 to repair msvcp110d.dll.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, normally for COM or ActiveX components. msvcp110d.dll is a runtime library, not a COM server. Registering it does not install its dependencies or make the C++ loader find it.
Microsoft documents the purpose of regsvr32. If a guide tells you to register this runtime DLL, skip that step.
Do not copy a random DLL into System32
Downloading msvcp110d.dll from an arbitrary DLL archive is risky because the file may be:
- Modified to contain malware.
- Built for the wrong architecture.
- From a different Visual Studio update.
- Missing its companion dependencies.
- Incompatible with the application.
- Blocked or quarantined again by security software.
A file that appears to have the right name can still produce a bad-image error, an entry-point error, or another loader failure.
Microsoft also advises against copying individual C runtime components into System32 instead of using the appropriate runtime deployment. The supported solutions are:

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Repair or reinstall the affected application.
- Install the correct release redistributable when the application requires

- Use matching Debug files only for controlled internal testing.
- Follow a vendor’s documented application-local deployment.
- Follow the separate SDK procedure for Windows Embedded Compact devices.
Run Windows component repairs only after application repairs
SFC and DISM are useful when Windows itself may be damaged, but they do not normally restore an application’s Visual Studio debug runtime. Run them after repairing the affected program, not as the first response to this filename.
Run System File Checker
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application again.
SFC checks protected Windows resources. Microsoft documents the command in its System File Checker guidance.
If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, test the program. If it reports that no integrity violations were found, the missing file is probably not a protected Windows component. If it reports that some files could not be repaired, continue with DISM.
Run DISM, then run SFC again
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to complete.
- Restart Windows.
- Open an elevated Command Prompt again.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart once more.
- Test the application.
Microsoft describes this process in its documentation for repairing a Windows image with DISM.
DISM and SFC can repair broader Windows corruption, but they generally will not create msvcp110d.dll in an application folder. If the program still names the same debug runtime afterward, repair the application or rebuild it as Release.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Update drivers only when the timing points to a driver
A graphics or device driver is not the usual cause of an exact msvcp110d.dll request, but a driver update can expose a related application or game problem. Consider this path when the error began immediately after a graphics driver change, a device installation, or a game update that uses a native hardware component.
To check drivers with Device Manager:
- Press
Win+X. - Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, or Network adapters.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Note the provider, date, and version.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
If the issue began immediately after a driver update, open the same properties dialog and select Roll Back Driver when that option is available. Test the application after each change rather than updating many unrelated devices at once.
Recommended Free Tools
Device Manager may report that the best driver is already installed while the hardware vendor has a newer package. Use the hardware or computer manufacturer’s official support page when a specific driver is required.
Manually checking numerous driver versions can be time-consuming and can leave the cause unclear. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify what needs attention, while driver installation is performed by the full version; it is optional and does not replace repairing an application that was shipped with a Debug dependency.
Windows Features will not install this runtime
Windows Features is not a source for msvcp110d.dll.
You can confirm that no relevant optional feature is available:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Open the Start menu.
- Type Windows Features.
- Select Turn Windows features on or off.
- Review the list of optional Windows components.
- Close the dialog without enabling unrelated features.
Do not enable random .NET, legacy, or compatibility features simply because a DLL error appeared. Those features do not substitute for the Visual Studio 2012 Debug C++ runtime, and changing them can introduce unrelated configuration problems.
If the application’s own documentation specifically requires a Windows feature, follow that documentation. Otherwise, return to application repair, architecture checking, and the release-versus-debug distinction.
Consider System Restore after a known change
System Restore may help when the error began immediately after a driver installation, Visual Studio removal, system update, or other identifiable change.
- Press
Win+R. - Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the programs and drivers that may be changed.
- Select Close.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
Microsoft explains this process in its System Restore documentation.
System Restore does not replace a correctly packaged application. If the program still requests msvcp110d.dll after restoration, repair or reinstall the program and check whether its vendor has issued a corrected build.
The Windows Embedded Compact exception
Windows Embedded Compact 2013 is a separate case from ordinary Windows 10 and Windows 11 troubleshooting.
Microsoft documents x86 and ARM copies of msvcp110d.dll for certain Windows Embedded Compact SDK and device scenarios. If you are developing for an embedded device, use the SDK and runtime files intended for that device and target architecture. Do not apply desktop System32, SysWOW64, or Visual C++ redistributable instructions automatically.
Microsoft’s separate Windows Embedded Compact 2013 support article covers that environment.
What each outcome means
Use the result of each step to narrow the cause:
- Application repair fixes it: the installation had a missing or damaged component.
- Launcher verification fixes it: the game installation had a missing, changed, or corrupted file.
- Antivirus history shows quarantine: security software removed or isolated a program file, but verify the program’s source before restoring anything.
- Installing VC++ 2012 fixes it: the program probably needed
msvcp110.dll, notmsvcp110d.dll, or its installer required the release runtime. - The error still names the final
d: the program is still requesting a Debug runtime. - Rebuilding in Release fixes it: your executable or one of its native dependencies was deployed in Debug configuration.
- A different debug DLL appears next: the program has several Debug runtime dependencies.
- SFC or DISM reports repairs but the error remains: Windows corruption was not the direct cause of the application’s missing runtime.
- A 32-bit build fails after installing only x64 files: install or deploy the architecture matching the application.
- The file appears present but the loader still fails: inspect dependent libraries, architecture, and toolset compatibility.
Frequently asked questions
Is msvcp110d.dll a Windows file?
It is a genuine Microsoft file, but it is not normally a desktop Windows operating-system component. It belongs to the Visual Studio 2012 debug C++ runtime.
Does the Visual C++ 2012 Redistributable install it?
Normally, no. The ordinary redistributable supplies release libraries such as msvcp110.dll. The d suffix identifies a Debug library that Microsoft documents separately.
Should I install Visual C++ 2015–2022 instead?
Not for an exact msvcp110d.dll error. Newer Visual C++ generations do not generally replace older VC++ 2012 dependencies, and they do not turn a Debug runtime request into a supported release deployment.
Should I download msvcp110d.dll separately?
No. There is no supported general-purpose Microsoft standalone download intended for users to obtain this file and place it in a system directory. Repair the application, install the required release runtime when appropriate, or rebuild the program correctly.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchShould I copy it into System32 or SysWOW64?
Generally, no. The application architecture and its deployment method determine where a runtime belongs. On 64-bit Windows, the names of these directories are easy to misinterpret, and copying a mismatched file can create a different loader error.
Can I register it with regsvr32?
No. It is a runtime library, not a COM or ActiveX registration DLL. regsvr32 does not repair its dependencies.
Why does a game ask for a Debug DLL?
The game, launcher, plugin, or one of its native dependencies may have been built or packaged in Debug mode. A retail program normally should be distributed as a Release build. Verify or reinstall the game, then contact the vendor if a fresh installation still requests the debug file.
Will SFC repair it?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows resources, while msvcp110d.dll is normally part of a Visual Studio development runtime or an application deployment. Run SFC and DISM only when there are broader signs of Windows corruption.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Do I need both x86 and x64 packages?
You need the package matching each application. A 64-bit Windows computer can run 32-bit applications, so it is normal for one computer to need both x86 and x64 release runtimes. This does not mean either release package will provide the exact debug file.
What if the error says “The specified module could not be found” even though the file exists?
The named DLL may have a missing dependency, wrong architecture, damaged contents, or incompatible toolset. Check the complete application installation and rebuild or reinstall all native components as a matching set.
Is it safe to keep using the program after copying a DLL from another computer?
That is not a reliable deployment method. The copied file may be the wrong build, architecture, or provenance, and it may leave other dependencies unresolved. Remove the ad hoc copy if possible and repair the application or use the developer’s controlled deployment procedure.
Final checklist
For an ordinary Windows user:
- Confirm the error names
msvcp110d.dllwith the finald. - Repair or reinstall the affected program.
- Verify the game’s files through its launcher.
- Check Windows Security Protection history.
- Do not use random DLL download sites.
- Do not copy the file into
System32orSysWOW64. - Do not run
regsvr32on it. - Install Visual C++ 2012 Update 4 only when the application needs the release runtime or names
msvcp110.dll. - Match x86 or x64 to the application.
- Use SFC, DISM, driver checks, or System Restore only when the surrounding symptoms justify them.
For a developer:
- Identify every native dependency that requires the debug runtime.
- Confirm the target architecture.
- Rebuild the application and native libraries in Release mode.
- Deploy the matching release redistributable.
- Keep Debug runtime files limited to controlled internal testing.
- Test the final package on a clean machine before distribution.
The exact filename matters. msvcp110d.dll points to the Visual Studio 2012 Debug C++ runtime, so the durable solution is usually to repair the application or rebuild it correctly rather than placing a downloaded DLL into a Windows folder.
