Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S can play select Xbox 360 games through backward compatibility—not the entire Xbox 360 library. Microsoft’s official backward-compatible games catalog is the definitive, current list. It separates games into All games, Xbox One games, Xbox 360 games, and Original Xbox games.
To check a particular Xbox 360 title, open the catalog, choose the Xbox 360 games section, and search or filter the results. If you already own a compatible digital game, it appears in the console’s Ready to Install section. A compatible physical disc works on Xbox One or Series X only after the console downloads the game, and the disc must remain inserted to launch it.

What “backward compatible” means
Backward compatibility lets supported Xbox 360 games run on newer Xbox consoles without requiring you to purchase a separate remaster. Compatibility is provided for specific titles selected by Microsoft and the game publishers. An Xbox 360 disc is not played directly from the disc: the console downloads the compatible game installation, while the disc acts as the license check.
Backward compatibility itself is free. You must still own the compatible digital license or physical disc. If you access a game through Game Pass, the subscription requirements for that service apply separately. Online console multiplayer may also require the applicable Xbox subscription.

Current compatibility by console
| Console | Xbox 360 games | Original Xbox games | Xbox One games | Physical discs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox One | Select titles | Select titles | Native platform | Compatible discs supported |
| Xbox One S | Select titles | Select titles | Native platform | Compatible discs supported |
| Xbox One X | Select titles | Select titles | Native platform | Compatible discs supported |
| Xbox Series X | Select titles | Select titles | Select titles | Compatible Xbox 360 and Original Xbox discs supported |
| Xbox Series S | Select titles | Select titles | Select titles | Not supported; backward-compatible games are digital only |
Microsoft’s scope is deliberately limited: Xbox One supports select Xbox 360 and Original Xbox games, while Xbox Series X|S supports select Xbox 360, Original Xbox, and Xbox One games. A game’s absence from the official catalog means you should not assume that its Xbox 360 disc or digital license will work.
How to find the official Xbox 360 games list
- Open Microsoft’s Xbox Backward Compatible Games catalog.
- Choose the Xbox 360 games category rather than All games.
- Use Collection & Filters to narrow the results.
- Choose a Genre, such as Action & adventure, Fighting, Indie, Kids & family, Racing & flying, Roleplaying, Shooter, Sports, or Strategy.
- Use the available Features filters when relevant: 4K, FPS Boost for Xbox Series X, FPS Boost for Xbox Series S, HDR, online multiplayer, local multiplayer, online co-op, or local co-op.
- Check the individual game listing before buying a disc or expecting a particular enhancement.
The catalog also includes a Maturity Rating filter and a CLEAR FILTERS control. Because Microsoft can revise availability and feature support, its catalog is more reliable than a static third-party list.

How to play an owned digital Xbox 360 game
- Sign in to the Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S console with the Microsoft account that owns the compatible game.
- Open the console’s Ready to Install section.
- Select the game and start the download.
- Launch it after installation completes.
You do not need to buy a remaster simply because the original game is running on a newer console. The digital license must, however, be for a title that appears in Microsoft’s compatible catalog.
How to use an Xbox 360 disc
On a disc-compatible console, insert the Xbox 360 disc. If the title is supported, the console will download the compatible version to its hard drive. Keep the original disc in the drive whenever you launch the installed game; it validates ownership but is not the game data being run.

This process works on Xbox One consoles and Xbox Series X. It does not work on Xbox Series S, which has no disc drive and supports backward-compatible games digitally only. A compatible Xbox 360 disc therefore cannot be converted into a Series S license.
Enhancements: 4K, HDR and FPS Boost
Some backward-compatible games receive technical improvements, including increased resolution of up to 4K, Auto HDR, and/or FPS Boost. These features are title-specific. They do not apply automatically to every Xbox 360 game.

The official catalog distinguishes between FPS Boost | XBOX Series X and FPS Boost | XBOX Series S. Use those filters rather than assuming that a game with FPS Boost on one Series console has identical support on the other.
The catalog also has a separate XBOX One X Enhanced Games label. Xbox One X enhancements can include higher resolution, faster frame rates, and improved textures. That label describes Xbox One X support and should not be confused with Series X|S backward-compatibility features.

Online play, local multiplayer and Original Xbox limitations
Xbox 360 backward-compatible games should be checked individually for their supported features. The catalog’s filters identify online multiplayer, online co-op, local multiplayer, and local co-op, but a feature listed for one title should not be generalized to the entire catalog.
Original Xbox games have additional restrictions. Backward compatibility does not restore Original Xbox-era Xbox Live services, including the original online multiplayer and in-game marketplaces. Original Xbox games are also not remastered versions, and they do not provide Xbox achievements because achievements were not part of the original Xbox platform.
Offline co-op, local multiplayer, and system-link remain available only where the original game supported them. In a special system-link case, a supported Original Xbox game can connect Original Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox One S, Xbox One X, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S consoles. System-link does not bring back the discontinued Original Xbox online services.

Existing Original Xbox saves do not transfer to Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S. After you play an Original Xbox title on Xbox One or Series X|S, saves created there can transfer through the cloud to another Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S console.
This limitation applies specifically to Original Xbox save data. For any game, confirm the title’s current behavior and supported features in Microsoft’s listing rather than assuming that every Xbox 360-era feature or save workflow is identical on a newer console.
