To fight it, unlock the Orchid Mantis Kebab recipe in the Stump Lab Outpost, craft the kebab at an Oven, and place it in the egg cluster inside the large orchid pot on the Shed porch. A Salty weapon, careful perfect-blocking, and plenty of healing make the fight much more manageable.
This guide applies to the completed base game, including Grounded: Fully Yoked update 1.4 and the current 1.4.7 patch. The Orchid Mantis is not part of Grounded 2. Patch 1.4.7 also made the Mantis’s Scream perfect-blockable.

Where to find the Orchid Mantis
You will not find the Orchid Mantis roaming around the Shed. It appears only after you summon it inside the large orchid pot in the Shed Surroundings area. The pot is on the Shed porch, and the boss arena is inside it.

How to unlock the Orchid Mantis Kebab recipe
- Defeat the Assistant Manager and collect the Assistant Manager Keycard.
- Travel to the small submerged outpost in the Koi Pond, commonly called Pond Outpost Alpha. It is in the pond wall south of the Pond Hatch.
- Use the Assistant Manager Keycard on the locked door inside the outpost.
- Press the button in the room beyond the keycard door. This opens access to the Stump Lab Outpost.
- Enter the Stump Lab Outpost at the base of the large stump in the Upper Yard.
- Complete the first parkour room and collect the Mantis Research Note.
Finding the research note unlocks the kebab recipe. Visiting the orchid pot, killing ordinary mantises, or defeating the Broodmother does not unlock the recipe by itself. The Broodmother is still important because it provides the chunks required to craft the kebab.
Orchid Mantis Kebab recipe
Craft the kebab at an Oven using:
| Ingredient | Quantity |
|---|---|
| Broodmother Chunk | 5 |
| Fire Ant Head | 2 |
| Wooden Splinter | 1 |
The recipe’s duplication cost is 1,000 Raw Science. The five Broodmother Chunks come from the Hedge Broodmother, so the Orchid Mantis is normally encountered after that boss.

- Carry an Orchid Mantis Kebab to the orchid pot on the Shed porch.
- Climb into the pot and locate the cluster of eggs against the orchid’s trunk.
- Interact with the eggs and choose the prompt to place the kebab.
The Mantis descends from the upper leaves after the kebab is placed. Dirt blocks the hose entrance once combat begins, so you cannot leave the arena until you or the boss dies.
If all players die, the kebab reappears in the center of the arena. A successful kill consumes it, but you can immediately use another kebab to summon the boss again after the fight ends. You cannot place a kebab while an Orchid Mantis encounter is already active.
Orchid Mantis weaknesses and resistances
Use PEEP.R on the boss, then inspect its creature card through the DATA tab of the SCA.B. The current creature data lists these modifiers:
| Damage type | Effect |
|---|---|
| Salty | 25% more damage |
| Spicy | 50% less damage |
| Chopping | 25% less damage |
| Busting | 50% less damage |
| Explosive | 50% less damage |
| Slashing | 50% less damage |
| Stabbing | 50% less damage |
| Poison | 25% less damage |
| Gas | Immune |
The Mantis’s listed weak point is its eyes, which are vulnerable to stabbing damage. However, the creature also has 50% stabbing resistance, so do not automatically replace a good Salty weapon with a stabbing weapon just to target the eyes.
Best weapon choice
A Salty weapon is the simplest general recommendation because Salty is the Mantis’s only listed elemental weakness. The Salt Morning Star is a particularly straightforward option.
Remember that adding Salty does not remove a weapon’s physical damage type. For example, a Salty chopping, slashing, or stabbing weapon still suffers the Mantis’s resistance to that physical type. Use the strongest practical Salty weapon available, and aim for the eyes when your weapon and positioning make that safe.
Orchid Mantis health and phases
The base-game creature data lists the Orchid Mantis at 3,400 health. Its damage resistance increases sharply as the battle progresses:
| Phase | Approximate trigger | Damage resistance |
|---|---|---|
| Phase 1 | Start of fight | 25% |
| Phase 2 | About 80% health remaining | 62.5% |
| Phase 3 | Below about 40% health | 77.5% |
The thresholds are approximate. The transitions occur during attack sequences rather than at perfectly clean menu-style breakpoints, so the Mantis may begin its phase attack slightly before or after the expected health value.
Phase 1 attacks
- Left and right claw swipes.
- A charged strike that can inflict Bleed.
- A three-hit ground slam that cannot be conventionally blocked.
- An unblockable leap from range.
- A vertical shockwave from range.
- An escape leap if you remain too close.
The vertical shockwave applies a 50% attack reduction for 30 seconds.
Phase 2 attacks and effects
At roughly 80% health, the Mantis performs a Scream, gains 10% increased damage, and adds Ground Shred to its attacks. Ground Shred is a five-hit attack that can inflict Bleed and reduce your attack by 50% for 30 seconds.
The Scream reduces exhaustion recovery by 50% for 20 seconds and extends perfect-block timing by 150 milliseconds for 30 seconds. In current 1.4.7 gameplay, the Scream itself can be perfect-blocked.
Phase 3 attacks and effects
Below roughly 40% health, the Mantis Screams again, gains 25% increased damage, and reaches 77.5% damage resistance. Its vertical shockwave becomes a four-wave attack that reduces your attack by 50%, and its charged strike gains a second hit.

How to defeat the Orchid Mantis
1. Use Salty damage, but do not ignore physical resistances
Start with your best practical Salty weapon. A Salt Morning Star avoids the need to balance the Mantis’s strong resistance to several physical damage types, although any weapon choice must still account for its own damage profile. Do not expect the same damage output after the boss enters later phases; its resistance increases substantially.

2. Avoid the unblockable attacks
Do not try to shield through every attack. The three-hit slam and Ground Shred must be avoided rather than conventionally blocked. A useful warning sign is the Mantis folding its claws below its head and tilting its head before these attacks.
Back away or reposition as soon as you identify the animation. Getting caught by the full sequence can cause Bleed, attack reduction, and enough damage to end the fight quickly.
3. Perfect-block normal attacks and the Scream
Perfect-blocking is valuable because the Mantis uses attacks that can apply severe secondary effects. Its charged strike can cause Bleed, while the Scream and shockwaves interfere with stamina, perfect-block timing, or attack power.
The old claim that the Scream cannot be perfect-blocked is outdated. Patch 1.4.7 made it perfect-blockable. Patch 1.4.2 also changed Mantis attacks so that their secondary effects no longer always trigger when the attacks are blocked or perfect-blocked.
4. Use the orchid trunk as temporary cover
The large trunk in the arena can break line of sight while you heal or recover stamina. Treat it as temporary cover, not a permanent safe spot: the Mantis can leap around the arena and use ranged shockwaves to reach or pressure you.
5. Bring real healing
Carry multiple Beefy Smoothies or Sticky Smoothies. Bandages alone are a poor plan for a first attempt because Bleed and attack-reduction effects can turn a small mistake into a sustained disadvantage. Heal behind the trunk when possible, but do not wait until you are one hit from death.
6. Target the eyes only when the opportunity is safe
The eyes are the listed weak point and take advantage of stabbing damage. Aim for them when you have a clear opening, especially with a stabbing attack that does not compromise your overall damage plan. The weak point is an opportunity, not a reason to ignore the Mantis’s broader resistances.
Orchid Mantis in New Game+
New Game+ versions of the fight are significantly more demanding. Infused creatures have more health, deal more damage, attack faster, and may gain additional infusion properties.
- In New Game+2, the Orchid Mantis summons an infused Mini-Mantis when it enters Phase 2.
- The Mini-Mantis has 1,500 health and begins with Phase 2 behavior.
- In New Game+4 and higher, a second Mini-Mantis appears when the boss enters Phase 3.
- A Mini-Mantis dies automatically when the main Orchid Mantis dies if it has not already been defeated.
Only the main Orchid Mantis counts as the kill for opening the REMIX.R room door. Killing a Mini-Mantis alone does not count; this was explicitly corrected in Patch 1.4.7.
Common mistakes and outdated advice
- Looking for it around the Shed: the boss is summoned inside the orchid pot with a kebab.
- Expecting the Broodmother to unlock the recipe: the Broodmother supplies Broodmother Chunks, but the recipe comes from the Mantis Research Note in the Stump Lab Outpost.
- Trying to escape through the hose: dirt blocks the entrance once the fight starts.
- Assuming the Scream cannot be perfect-blocked: this was changed in Patch 1.4.7.
- Believing blocked attacks always apply their effects: Patch 1.4.2 changed that behavior.
- Counting a Mini-Mantis kill as the boss kill: only the main Mantis satisfies the REMIX.R room requirement.
- Using an unofficial summon command: Obsidian does not document a supported console command for summoning the Orchid Mantis. Instructions based on mods, unofficial PC tools, or reverse-engineered asset paths are not normal game functionality.
