Preorders were offered through Xbox.com, the Microsoft Store in the United States, the ASUS eShop, and participating local retailers. Xbox said the initial rollout covered 38 countries. ASUS published a market-by-market list and noted that additional markets would follow, so availability was not identical everywhere and retailers did not necessarily stock both models.

ROG Xbox Ally versus Ally X: what is different?
| Feature | ROG Xbox Ally | ROG Xbox Ally X |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | AMD Ryzen Z2 A | AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme |
| Memory | 16GB LPDDR5-6400 | 24GB LPDDR5X-8000 |
| Storage | 512GB M.2 2280 SSD | 1TB M.2 2280 SSD |
| Battery | 60Wh | 80Wh |
| Weight | 670g | 715g |
| Display | 7-inch 1080p IPS, 120Hz | 7-inch 1080p IPS, 120Hz |
| USB-C | Two USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C ports | One USB4 port and one USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port |
| Triggers | Hall Effect analog triggers | Impulse triggers |
| U.S. price | $599.99 | $999.99 |
The Ally X is more than a faster processor. Its $400 premium also pays for a larger battery, 8GB more memory, twice the internal storage, USB4, impulse triggers, and a higher-end processor with an NPU. Those changes should make it the stronger choice for demanding games and longer-term use.
However, neither model has a larger or OLED screen: both use the same 7-inch, 1080p, 120Hz IPS display. Buyers mainly interested in screen size, resolution, or OLED image quality should not treat the Ally X as a display upgrade.
What does “Xbox” mean?
These are ASUS Windows 11 Home handheld gaming PCs developed with Xbox and AMD, not Microsoft-manufactured Xbox consoles. They combine standard PC gaming flexibility with Xbox-oriented controls, software, and branding.

Both devices can run compatible Windows games from Xbox and other PC storefronts. They also support Xbox Remote Play and Xbox Cloud Gaming where those services, regions, accounts, and network conditions allow. Xbox Play Anywhere titles can share progression across supported Xbox consoles, Windows PCs, and the handheld.
That does not mean every Xbox console game runs natively on the device. A game must have a compatible Windows version for native installation. Console-only games may instead require Remote Play or cloud streaming, and game libraries and features vary by region and Game Pass plan.

Xbox’s product page currently advertises three months of Xbox Game Pass Premium with either handheld, described as almost a $45 value. The offer is not permanent free Game Pass: eligibility, activation rules, regional availability, and subscription terms apply. Which Xbox Ally should you buy?
Choose the ROG Xbox Ally if:
- Your budget is closer to $600 than $1,000.
- You mainly play lighter, older, or less demanding games.
- You can manage a 512GB library with a microSD card or future SSD upgrade.
- You want the Xbox-focused Windows experience without paying flagship handheld pricing.
Choose the ROG Xbox Ally X if:
- You regularly play modern AAA games.
- You value the strongest performance of the two models.
- The 80Wh battery, 24GB of memory, and 1TB SSD matter more than the $400 premium.
- You want USB4, impulse triggers, and more headroom for several years of use.
The standard Ally is the value option; the Ally X is the enthusiast option. The premium model’s advantages are substantial, but they do not change the display. Buyers who want maximum performance, storage, and battery life are better served by the X, while buyers who mainly want an Xbox-branded handheld PC should save the money with the standard Ally.

The standard Ally’s 512GB SSD can fill quickly with modern PC games. A microSD card is the simplest expansion route, although loading and installed-game performance can differ from the internal SSD. Xbox highlighted SanDisk cards of up to 2TB; see SanDisk’s store for current options.

Both devices use an M.2 2280 SSD. Xbox identified the Seagate FireCuda 530R in 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB capacities as a compatible internal-storage option. Replacing the drive is more involved than using a microSD card and may require opening the handheld and reinstalling or recovering Windows.

ASUS lists an ROG Xbox Ally Premium Case at $69.99 in its U.S. store, but it is unnecessary if you already own a compatible hard case and mostly play at home. A dock, external display, or extra charger can also add to the real purchase cost.
Battery life depends heavily on the game, brightness, power mode, frame-rate target, and wireless connectivity. Likewise, ASUS performance figures described as “up to” results came from specified pre-release testing conditions and should not be treated as universal frame-rate gains.
Bottom line
The Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X prices and preorder details were officially confirmed in September 2025: $599.99 for the ROG Xbox Ally and $999.99 for the ROG Xbox Ally X in the United States, with a launch on October 16, 2025. Both are now released Windows handheld PCs. Buy the standard Ally for value; choose the Ally X if its larger battery, additional memory, 1TB storage, USB4, and higher-end performance justify the $400 difference.
