Yes—the Xbox Ally’s controller-focused full-screen interface is no longer exclusive to Xbox-branded hardware. Microsoft first launched it with the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X, expanded the experience to Windows 11 handhelds already on the market on November 21, 2025, and began rolling out the broader Xbox mode to selected Windows 11 PCs—including handhelds, laptops, desktops, and tablets—in April 2026.
It is still a Windows feature, not a new Xbox operating system. Supported devices can start in a full-screen gaming environment, aggregate games from supported PC storefronts, reduce some background Windows activity, and return to the normal desktop when users need files, mods, launchers, or other PC tools.
What Microsoft originally promised
Microsoft announced the full-screen Xbox experience in June 2025 alongside the Xbox Ally family. The launch order was clear:
- The ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X would debut with the experience.
- Existing ROG Ally and ROG Ally X handhelds would be among the first other devices targeted for an update.
- Similar full-screen Xbox experiences would reach other Windows handhelds beginning in 2026.
The wording mattered. Microsoft promised “similar” experiences rather than an identical software image for every handheld. Device support can depend on Windows updates, OEM launcher configuration, firmware, controller integration, and the gaming home app selected by the manufacturer.

- With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
- Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
- A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
- The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
- The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
That promise has since moved beyond the planning stage. Microsoft announced general availability for Windows 11 handhelds on the market on November 21, 2025, then began using the name Xbox mode as the feature expanded to additional Windows 11 form factors in selected markets on April 30, 2026. See Microsoft’s November handheld announcement and its Xbox mode rollout announcement.
What Xbox mode actually is
Xbox mode is a controller-optimized Windows gaming environment. On a supported system, Windows can launch a gaming home app full screen instead of presenting the ordinary desktop, taskbar, and overlapping windows as the main starting point.
The experience is designed to provide:
- A full-screen, controller-navigable game launcher.
- Access to the Xbox library and Game Pass catalog where available.
- A consolidated view of installed PC games from supported storefronts.
- Game Bar and Task View entry points for switching between games, apps, and the desktop.
- Reduced visibility of conventional Windows UI elements.
- A reversible path back to the normal Windows desktop.
Microsoft’s support documentation describes it as a console-inspired Windows experience, not a locked-down console operating system. You can still reach Windows, install software, manage files, use mods, and run third-party launchers.
Which handhelds can use it?
Microsoft says the full-screen experience became generally available on Windows 11 handhelds already on the market in November 2025. The original rollout specifically identified existing ASUS ROG Ally and ROG Ally X models as early follow-up targets after the Xbox Ally launch.
For other devices—such as Lenovo Legion Go, MSI Claw, and future Windows handhelds—the safe assumption is not that every model receives an identical experience at the same time. Microsoft’s current documentation still refers to supported markets, supported devices, and supported gaming home apps. Owners should check Windows Update, their manufacturer’s support software, and the Xbox app rather than treating “Windows handheld” as a guarantee of immediate feature parity.
Xbox mode began expanding beyond handhelds in selected markets on April 30, 2026. Microsoft’s broader rollout includes Windows 11 desktops, laptops, and tablets, although the value and behavior of a controller-first interface can differ substantially on those devices.
Requirements and setup
Microsoft lists Windows 11 version 24H2 or later as the minimum documented requirement. Availability also depends on the user’s market and on having a supported gaming home app installed.

On a compatible device, the documented setup path is:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Gaming > Xbox mode.
- Under Choose home app, select a supported gaming home app.
- Optionally enable Enter Xbox mode on startup.
When startup mode is enabled, Windows can limit background processes while the gaming experience is active. Microsoft says users can enter or exit the mode through several routes:
- Press
Win + Gto open Game Bar, or use the handheld’s Xbox/Guide button where supported. - Press
Win + Tabto open Task View. - Press
Win + F11to switch between the desktop and Xbox mode. - Use the relevant touch gestures on a touch-enabled device.
After returning from the desktop, Windows may offer a restart to restore the optimized gaming state. You can continue without restarting, but Microsoft presents the restart as the preferred way to regain the mode’s performance-oriented settings.
What changes during use?
Xbox mode is intentionally less flexible than the normal Windows desktop. Microsoft documents several behavior changes:
- Only one window is displayed at a time.
- Apps appear full screen where possible.
- Apps that open multiple windows may show only the most recent window.
- Apps without full-screen support may appear against a black background.
- Minimize and maximize controls do not work normally.
- Some familiar desktop keyboard shortcuts are disabled.
This is useful when the goal is to pick up a handheld and launch a game with a controller. It is less convenient when you need to repair a launcher, open a browser beside a game, manage files, configure an emulator, or use a chat and hardware utility at the same time.
Does it combine Steam, Epic, Battle.net, and other libraries?
The Xbox app’s aggregated library is intended to make installed PC games easier to find, even when they come from different storefronts. Xbox Ally launch material references Xbox, Game Pass where available, Battle.net, and other leading PC stores. Microsoft’s broader aggregation goal has also included Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, Ubisoft Connect, and Battle.net.
However, aggregation is not the same as unified ownership or universal compatibility. A game may still require its original launcher, a separate sign-in, launcher updates, manual controller configuration, or desktop interaction. A title appearing in a combined library does not prove that it supports handheld controls, suspend behavior, anti-cheat requirements, or every Xbox mode feature.

What the mode may improve technically
Microsoft says Xbox mode can limit background processes, defer nonessential tasks, suppress parts of the normal Windows shell, and return more memory to games. In early testing, Microsoft representatives cited approximately 2GB of recovered memory for games. That is available system memory—not additional physical RAM—and it is a first-party test claim rather than a universal benchmark.
Microsoft also reported that idle power draw while the device was sleeping was approximately one-third of the desktop-experience level under the tested conditions. That figure should not be read as a guaranteed improvement in battery life during gameplay.
The distinction is important:
- Interface improvement: controller navigation, a full-screen launcher, and easier library access.
- Operating-system behavior: fewer background tasks and less visible desktop activity.
- Resource effect: potentially more memory and processing headroom for a game.
- Actual performance: frame rates, frame pacing, battery life, and temperatures remain dependent on the handheld, game, drivers, power profile, and cooling system.
Xbox mode cannot compensate for a weaker APU, a small battery, inadequate cooling, poor game optimization, driver problems, anti-cheat incompatibility, or a display limited by its refresh rate. It may reduce Windows friction, but it is not a performance upgrade by itself.
Xbox mode is not SteamOS
SteamOS and Xbox mode solve related but different problems. SteamOS is a dedicated operating system built around the Steam Deck experience. Xbox mode is a gaming shell and configuration layer built on Windows 11.
| Area | Xbox mode | SteamOS |
|---|---|---|
| Storefronts | Broad Windows flexibility, including Xbox, Game Pass where available, Steam, Epic, GOG, Ubisoft Connect, and Battle.net with varying integration. | Strongest native experience for Steam; other stores may require workarounds or compatibility layers. |
| Desktop access | Full Windows desktop, files, mods, utilities, and Windows applications remain available. | Desktop mode exists, but the platform is more tightly centered on Steam. |
| Xbox services | Native Windows access to Xbox PC features, Game Pass, Play Anywhere, remote play, and cloud gaming where supported. | Not the natural choice for native Xbox PC app integration. |
| Maintenance | Still subject to Windows updates, drivers, OEM utilities, launchers, and occasional desktop behavior. | More console-like for Steam users, though compatibility and unsupported games remain concerns. |
| Compatibility | Windows advantages for Windows-only software, but individual games can still have launcher, controller, or anti-cheat issues. | Compatibility layers can work well, but some anti-cheat systems, launchers, and unsupported titles remain problematic. |
There is no universal winner. Xbox mode is more attractive to users who need Windows openness and Xbox services; SteamOS is often simpler for players whose library and habits are overwhelmingly Steam-based.

Xbox mode improves discovery and navigation, but it does not certify that every PC game works well on a handheld. Microsoft’s Handheld Compatibility Program addresses that separate question with labels such as Handheld Optimized and Mostly Compatible, alongside other title-specific indicators.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMicrosoft said in April 2026 that more than 1,000 PC games had been made to play well on handheld through the program. That is Microsoft’s program count, not a guarantee that those games run identically across every APU, screen, control layout, Windows build, or power profile. Compatibility information appears on product detail pages and, on supported handhelds, in a handheld-compatible channel.

In practical terms, Xbox mode answers “where do I find and launch my games?” Compatibility labels help answer “how suitable is this particular game for handheld play?”
Should you buy an Xbox Ally for the interface?
Usually, not by itself. The software expansion reduces the need to buy Xbox-branded hardware solely to obtain a controller-friendly Windows launcher. If you already own an ROG Ally, ROG Ally X, Lenovo Legion Go, MSI Claw, or another supported Windows handheld, the update may deliver much of the software benefit without replacing the device.
Buy or prioritize an Xbox Ally if:
- You want the most tightly integrated Xbox-branded handheld experience.
- You value a dedicated Xbox button and integrated Game Bar behavior.
- You want Xbox Game Pass, Play Anywhere, remote play, and cloud gaming presented alongside PC games.
- You prefer hardware designed around the Xbox software experience from the beginning.
- You are choosing between otherwise similar handhelds and first-party Xbox integration is a deciding factor.
Keep or consider another Windows handheld if:
- You already own a compatible ROG Ally or another handheld that can receive the feature.
- Your priority is hardware—APU performance, screen size, controls, storage, battery, cooling, or price—rather than branding.
- You are comfortable maintaining Windows, drivers, launchers, and OEM control software.
- You want a larger screen or a distinctive control layout, as offered by devices such as the Lenovo Legion Go.
For current products, the relevant official pages are the ROG Xbox Ally, ROG Xbox Ally X, ROG Ally, ROG Ally X, Lenovo Legion Go, and MSI Claw. Regional availability and pricing vary and should be checked with the manufacturer.
What it means for Xbox and PC gaming
The important change is not simply a new launcher. Microsoft is trying to make Windows a more credible handheld platform without giving up the flexibility that makes a PC different from a console.
That means the company is addressing several long-standing handheld frustrations—small desktop targets, multiple launchers, unwanted Windows activity, and awkward controller navigation—while preserving access to mods, files, third-party stores, and traditional applications.
The unresolved issue is consistency. Xbox mode can make the first five minutes of a gaming session feel more console-like, but reliable sleep behavior, updates, driver support, storefront handoffs, controller support, and game compatibility still determine whether the overall experience feels console-quality.
Verdict
The original Xbox Ally promise has largely been fulfilled and expanded. The full-screen Xbox experience began on Xbox Ally hardware, reached more Windows 11 handhelds in late 2025, and evolved into Xbox mode for selected Windows 11 devices in 2026.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →For buyers, that makes the Xbox Ally’s interface a meaningful advantage—but no longer an exclusive reason to choose Xbox-branded hardware. Choose the Xbox Ally for its combined hardware, Xbox integration, and first-party support. Choose another Windows handheld if its screen, battery, controls, performance, or price better match your needs. Choose SteamOS if your priority is a simpler Steam-centered experience. In every case, treat Xbox mode as a more polished Windows gaming layer, not as a replacement for Windows or a guarantee of better frame rates and battery life.
