Short answer: The Xbox app is a broader hub for Xbox and PC Game Pass discovery, social and cross-device features, and a combined view of supported installed games. Battle.net remains Blizzard’s documented app for installing Blizzard games and troubleshooting their downloads and updates. Xbox can show some installed Battle.net games, but that does not mean it takes over their installation or patching.
What each app is for
| Need | Xbox app for PC | Battle.net desktop app |
|---|---|---|
| Find games | Browse Xbox games, recommendations, genres, the store, and PC Game Pass. | Find and install Blizzard games through Blizzard’s game-focused app. |
| View installed games | Show supported installed games from multiple PC storefronts in an aggregated library. | Show and manage Blizzard games in Battle.net, including locating an existing installation when the app displays Install. |
| Install and update Blizzard games | Can surface supported installed games, but the aggregation announcement does not document Xbox taking over Battle.net’s install or update controls. | Blizzard directs players to Battle.net for installing World of Warcraft and troubleshooting downloads or updates. |
| Play and connect across devices | Offers features including chat, cloud gaming, remote play, achievements, saves, and purchases, subject to relevant product and game support. | The cited Blizzard support guidance addresses Blizzard games and accounts; it does not establish an equivalent feature comparison. |
Microsoft describes the Xbox app’s role as bringing supported installed games from multiple storefronts together in one place. That is a library and access feature, not evidence that Xbox replaces each storefront’s own management tools. Xbox Wire’s September 15, 2025 announcement names Battle.net among the storefronts that can appear in the aggregated library.

Where Battle.net games appear in the Xbox library
Xbox announced that supported installed games from Battle.net and other PC storefronts can appear in the Xbox app’s My Library and Most Recent sections. The announcement also says you can control which supported storefronts appear under Settings > Library & Extensions. The feature gives you another place to view and launch eligible games; it does not document transferring their installation or patch workflow to Xbox.

Availability is described for supported installed games. The announcement does not establish that every Battle.net title, uninstalled game, or storefront feature will appear in Xbox.

Where to install and update Blizzard games
For Blizzard titles, use Battle.net for the installation workflow Blizzard documents. For World of Warcraft, Blizzard’s instructions are to open Battle.net, select the game and game version, then choose Install. If Battle.net shows Install even though the game is already on the PC, Blizzard says to locate the existing installation folder in the app. Its support guidance also directs players with download or update problems to technical troubleshooting.
- Open the Battle.net desktop app and select World of Warcraft.
- Choose the game version you want.
- Select Install, or locate the existing game folder if Battle.net reports Install for a game already on the PC.
- If a download or update fails, follow Blizzard’s troubleshooting guidance for the issue.
These instructions establish Battle.net’s role for World of Warcraft installation and support; they do not prove that every Battle.net game uses identical update settings. See Blizzard’s World of Warcraft installation instructions and download and update troubleshooting guidance.

What PC Game Pass changes
The Xbox app is also a route to the PC Game Pass catalog. That catalog changes: access to a game ends if your subscription expires or the title leaves the catalog, and game availability can vary by time, region, plan, and platform. Check the PC Game Pass page for current catalog and subscription details rather than treating the app’s library as a permanent collection of owned games.
Requirements and practical setup
Microsoft lists Windows 10/11 version 22H2 or higher, 150 MB of storage, and a 720p display among the Xbox app’s requirements. Requirements can vary by game; check the Xbox app page for current details. The Xbox app’s controller-optimized mode is designed for Windows 11 PCs and handhelds. An Xbox Wireless Controller is an optional way to use controller-focused features, not a requirement to use either launcher.

Which app should you open?
- Open Xbox to browse Xbox and PC Game Pass games, use Xbox’s supported social or cross-device features, or see supported installed games from several PC storefronts together.
- Open Battle.net to install Blizzard games, check their state in Blizzard’s app, or follow Blizzard’s download and update troubleshooting instructions.
- Use both if you want Xbox as a broader library view while keeping Battle.net for Blizzard game installation and support.
The official Xbox and Blizzard documentation cited here does not establish which app downloads or updates games faster. Choose based on the job each app documents, rather than assuming a speed advantage.
