Xbox attended Gamescom 2025 in Cologne, Germany, from August 20 to 24, bringing the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X for public hands-on demonstrations. Visitors could try the Xbox-branded Windows handhelds alongside Xbox, PC, and third-party games before both devices launched on October 16, 2025.
Gamescom 2025 was a hands-on preview, not the handhelds’ launch
Xbox and ASUS had already announced the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X during the June 8, 2025 Xbox Games Showcase. Gamescom was the next major step: a public demonstration of the hardware and its software experience ahead of release.
Xbox’s physical presence ran from Wednesday, August 20 through Sunday, August 24, 2025. That distinction matters because the event was neither the original reveal nor a retail launch. The handhelds later released in select markets on October 16, with Xbox subsequently stating that they were available across 45 countries, with additional markets to follow.
What Xbox brought to Cologne
The Xbox booth included first-party Xbox games, third-party partners, PC titles, and games associated with Game Pass. Both handheld models were part of the event programming, giving attendees an opportunity to see how Xbox’s software ecosystem worked on ASUS hardware.

ASUS also made the devices available at its ROG booth. ASUS described Gamescom as the first opportunity for gamers to try the new handhelds, although that should be understood as an event hands-on opportunity rather than proof of retail availability at the show. There is no verified indication that visitors could universally purchase the devices on the event floor.
Xbox scheduled live broadcasts from its booth on August 20 and 21. The Wednesday broadcast began at 6 a.m. PT / 9 a.m. ET / 2 p.m. BST / 3 p.m. CEST and featured the ROG Xbox Ally family, Grounded 2, Keeper, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, and other games. These broadcasts were separate from Gamescom Opening Night Live, which took place before the public show floor opened.
Games associated with the handheld demonstrations
Xbox highlighted a new playable Hollow Knight: Silksong demo on PC or the ROG Xbox Ally X, along with Grounded 2, Keeper, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, and additional Xbox and third-party games.
The Xbox Gamescom recap also pointed to a first public hands-on opportunity for Ninja Gaiden 4 on the handhelds and a theater presentation for The Outer Worlds 2. ASUS separately listed games including Roblox, Sea of Thieves, and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4 among the titles available at its booth.

Those lists should not be read as saying that every game was playable on every device or through the same method. A title might have been locally installed, streamed through Xbox Cloud Gaming, accessed through Xbox Remote Play, or running as a Windows PC game. A booth demo also does not establish final retail performance, battery life, or frame rates.

What the ROG Xbox Ally actually is
The ROG Xbox Ally is not a conventional portable Xbox console manufactured by Microsoft. Both models are Windows 11 handheld PCs made by ASUS in partnership with Xbox and AMD. Their purpose is to combine ASUS ROG hardware with an Xbox-focused interface and access to several gaming ecosystems.
The devices boot into an Xbox full-screen experience designed for handheld use. Microsoft highlighted a dedicated Xbox button, enhanced Game Bar access, and an aggregated library that can bring together games from Xbox, Game Pass, Battle.net, and other leading PC storefronts.
The software experience supports several different ways to play:
- Local Windows play: install compatible PC games on the internal SSD or another supported storage device.
- Xbox Cloud Gaming: stream supported games over the internet, subject to regional, catalog, subscription, and network requirements.
- Xbox Remote Play: stream compatible games from an Xbox console on the same account.
- Xbox Play Anywhere: play supported digital games across Xbox consoles and Windows PCs while retaining compatible saves and entitlements.
Xbox said in June 2025 that more than 1,000 games supported Play Anywhere. That figure is Microsoft’s stated total and can change as the catalog changes. It also does not mean that every Xbox game runs natively on the handheld. Game availability depends on platform support, Windows compatibility, launchers, anti-cheat systems, controls, and whether the game is installed or streamed.
The Windows foundation provides flexibility, but it also means the Ally is not guaranteed to behave like an Xbox Series console. Multiple launchers, updates, configuration options, and compatibility issues can be part of the experience. The Xbox interface is intended to reduce that friction; it does not remove the underlying PC environment.

ROG Xbox Ally versus ROG Xbox Ally X

| Connectivity | Two USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C ports | USB4 plus USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C |
| Operating system | Windows 11 Home | Windows 11 Home |
The standard Ally is the lower-cost option, while the Ally X is the performance-oriented model. The X’s faster processor, 24GB of memory, 1TB SSD, larger battery, USB4 support, and additional rear assignable buttons make it better suited to demanding PC games and heavier multitasking. It is also heavier and more expensive.
The larger battery should not be interpreted as a guaranteed playtime figure. Runtime varies significantly with the game, brightness, frame-rate target, resolution, power mode, and whether the device is playing locally or streaming. Likewise, a 120Hz display can make supported games feel more responsive, but demanding titles may not reach 120 frames per second at native 1080p.

The event showed that Xbox’s handheld strategy was broader than putting a traditional Xbox console into a smaller shell. Microsoft was using a third-party Windows device to extend its ecosystem across local PC gaming, Xbox Play Anywhere, cloud streaming, Remote Play, and multiple PC storefronts.
That approach gives Xbox owners a clearer reason to consider the hardware: Remote Play can connect the handheld to an existing console, and supported Play Anywhere games can carry progress between Xbox and Windows. Game Pass subscribers also get a natural route into supported Xbox and PC libraries, although catalog access depends on the subscription tier, platform, region, and current licensing.
For PC handheld buyers, the appeal is different. The Ally offers Windows flexibility and access beyond the Xbox store, including leading PC storefronts. The trade-off is that Windows can require more setup and maintenance than a dedicated console-style operating system. Steam, Battle.net, Xbox, and other launchers may each have their own updates, sign-in requirements, control behavior, and compatibility limitations.

Should prospective buyers care?
- Xbox console owners: The most relevant features are Remote Play, shared accounts, and compatible Play Anywhere saves and entitlements.
- Game Pass subscribers: The handheld is designed to make supported Xbox and PC Game Pass games easier to access, but Game Pass is not required for every locally installed PC game.
- PC handheld buyers: The Ally offers a more Xbox-oriented front end without giving up the flexibility of Windows.
- Steam or Battle.net users: The aggregated library is useful, but it does not guarantee perfect compatibility for every game or storefront.
- Gamescom attendees: The main value was early hands-on access before release, not on-site retail availability.
The standard Ally is the more sensible choice for buyers who want the Xbox handheld interface at a lower entry price, especially for less demanding games or streaming. The Ally X is the stronger fit for enthusiasts who value performance headroom, memory, storage, battery capacity, and higher-end connectivity.
ASUS’s U.S. product page showed the standard ROG Xbox Ally at $599.99 when checked on August 18, 2026. Prices vary by country, retailer, and promotion, so current buyers should verify the latest official listing. The Xbox product page also notes that retailer prices may vary.
Current status
The ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X launched on October 16, 2025. Gamescom 2025 was therefore best understood as the public hands-on preview that connected the June announcement with the October release. It demonstrated how Xbox planned to operate on a Windows handheld, rather than introducing a new traditional Xbox console.
For current availability, pricing, and regional configurations, check the official Xbox ROG Xbox Ally page and ASUS product listings. Buyers should also confirm the current Game Pass catalog, cloud-gaming requirements, and the specific Windows compatibility of the games they intend to play.
