What did Xbox’s CEO say about gaming costs?
In an Entertainment Weekly interview published June 22, 2026, Sharma said, “gaming is unaffordable in many cases, in terms of how we’ve traditionally thought about it.” She added that the pressure came not only from hardware costs but also “because of the attention economy and competing subscriptions.”

Her point was broader than the price of a console or a single game. The traditional way of playing can involve buying hardware, purchasing games, and paying for subscriptions while competing entertainment services also seek a share of a household’s budget and time. Sharma made the remarks in a conversation about how people play, including accessible mobile games; she did not announce a specific price cut or new product in that interview.
Did she also say Game Pass had become too expensive?
Yes, in a separate statement. In an internal memo reported by GameSpot on April 13, 2026, and obtained by The Verge, Sharma wrote: “Game Pass has become too expensive for players, so we need a better value equation. Long term, we will evolve Game Pass into a more flexible system which will take time to test and learn around.”

That memo indicates an intention to rethink the service’s value and flexibility; it does not establish which changes have shipped or what plans currently cost. GameSpot reported that Game Pass Ultimate was $30 after an October 2025 increase described as 50%, but that is a historical figure, not a guarantee of the current price. Plan terms and prices can vary by region and change over time.
Why does Xbox say affordability is getting harder?
In a June 10, 2026 memo, Sharma and Xbox president Matt Booty described financial and hardware pressures facing the company. These are Xbox’s own reported figures and explanations, rather than independent measurements.

- Rising component costs: Xbox said console storage component prices were more than twice the previous fall’s level when Sharma became CEO in February 2026, doubled again afterward, and were expected to exceed five times the price Xbox paid two years earlier by the 2027 holiday season. The forecast is the company’s, not an independently verified market index.
- Investment and revenue pressure: Xbox said it had spent more than $20 billion over five years on ongoing content, platform, and hardware subsidy investments, excluding Activision Blizzard King, while annual revenue had declined by nearly half a billion dollars during that period.
- Demand and supply: The memo said Xbox could not make as many consoles as players wanted to buy and needed a new hardware business model and partnerships.
- Business performance: Xbox said it expected to end the fiscal year at about a 3% accountability margin, down year over year.
The memo also described organizational challenges: Xbox said its studio system had been overextended across changing strategies and that major franchises had not been funded adequately to compete and win. Its authors wrote, “We won’t succeed by hiding hard truths, nor will we succeed by doing the same thing and expecting different results.”
Does affordability mean Xbox will abandon exclusives?
No blanket change was announced. Sharma’s June 5 comments, as reported by GameSpot, describe a strategic tension: games should reach large audiences, but a platform also needs exclusive content. She said Xbox was examining the question title by title, which is deliberation rather than a commitment to make every game exclusive—or to end exclusivity altogether.

The June company memo likewise said reliable first- and third-party exclusives and new intellectual property remain critical to success. Xbox is therefore weighing broad distribution against the role that distinctive games play in giving people a reason to choose its platform.
Does the evidence show gamers have been saying this for years?
It supports a narrower conclusion: the cost concern is visible among some players, and Xbox’s CEO has now stated that traditional gaming is unaffordable in many cases. It does not prove a representative, years-long consensus among gamers.

Windows Central reported that 151 of 228 participants in a 2026 reader poll—66%—said gaming costs were getting out of control. Because this was a self-selected poll of Windows Central readers, it illustrates the views of those participants and should not be generalized to all players.

There is no single best response: the value depends on what someone already owns, which games they want to play, and how often they play. Before adding a recurring payment or replacing hardware, compare the costs that apply to your own habits.

- Hardware: Consider whether your current console, PC, or phone already runs the games you want before treating a new device as necessary.
- Subscriptions: Compare the current regional price and included games with what you actually play. A subscription that is useful for frequent play may be poor value if you rarely use it.
- Access: Check whether a desired game is available on a device you already own, and whether it is exclusive to a platform.
- Library value: Factor in games you already own and regularly return to, rather than judging a platform only by its newest releases.

What about cheaper gaming through ads?
Advertising is not an announced Xbox affordability policy. GameSpot reported that Xbox chief strategy officer Matthew Ball had discussed advertising as a possible way to offer cheaper gaming, but later clarified that his comments were made before joining Xbox and did not necessarily reflect Microsoft’s plans or beliefs. He also said he did not advocate interrupting gameplay with ads.
