To carry your Mass Effect 2 decisions into Mass Effect 3, start a new ME3 career and choose IMPORT ME2 CHARACTER, then select a completed ME2 career. This is the documented flow for the original PlayStation 3 release; menu labels and save compatibility can vary by edition and platform.
Import a completed Mass Effect 2 career
- Finish the Mass Effect 2 career you want to continue. The career must be completed to appear as an import option.
- Start a new career in Mass Effect 3.
- Select IMPORT ME2 CHARACTER and choose the completed career from the list. EA’s Mass Effect 3 PlayStation 3 manual documents this menu flow for that release.
The manual says importing Shepard preserves the character’s level and decisions that affect Mass Effect 3. It does not promise that every statistic, item, or other detail carries over.

What to do if your career is missing
- Confirm that the ME2 career is complete; an unfinished career is not eligible for the documented import.
- Check that the ME2 save and ME3 release are in a compatible platform and edition context. The available documentation does not establish one universal save-transfer method across platforms and storefronts.
- Avoid relying on a generic save-folder path. The exact locations and transfer steps depend on platform and edition, and are not established here.
Legendary Edition: import versus setting choices
Mass Effect Legendary Edition includes Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, and Mass Effect 3, and EA lists it for EA app, Steam, PC, PlayStation, and Xbox. EA says decisions travel between games, but the unified launcher does not combine their save files: EA’s 2021 calibration article states that “Saves are still unique to each game and can be managed independently of each other.”
If you begin with ME3 and do not have an earlier career save, the optional Mass Effect: Genesis 2 comic lets you set choices from earlier games. That is a choice-setting alternative, not an import of your ME2 career save. See EA’s Legendary Edition page.

Can you move saves between the original games and Legendary Edition?
Do not assume cross-edition migration will work. In an EA forum response, an EA staff member said an ME2 Legendary Edition save moved to the original ME3 save folder may work on PC, while warning that changes between releases can cause issues: EA forum response about an ME2 Legendary Edition save and original ME3. This is a limited, caveated PC answer—not a supported universal procedure for other editions, storefronts, or consoles.
