Xbox announced the Select as one of several Fire TV devices due to receive the Xbox app, yet the latest official UK Xbox TV-support page does not list it. Check that the Xbox app is available on your specific device and account region before buying.
Why Xbox gamers were interested
Xbox Cloud Gaming streams supported games from Microsoft’s servers, so the Fire TV Stick does not need to run Xbox games locally. That makes the idea attractive for a second television, a bedroom TV or a household where the main screen is already occupied.

In November 2025, Xbox announced plans to bring its app to additional Amazon devices, including the Fire TV Stick 4K Select, Fire TV Stick 4K Plus, Fire TV 4-Series televisions and Fire TV Omni QLED televisions. Availability was stated to vary by region. The announcement is documented in Xbox Wire.

That announcement is not the same as confirmed, current UK availability. Xbox’s official UK TV-support page currently names the Fire TV Stick 4K Max (1st Gen), Fire TV Cube (3rd Gen), Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Gen) and Fire TV Stick 4K (2nd Gen), but does not clearly list the Fire TV Stick 4K Select.

What happened to the £19.99 deal?
T3 reported the Fire TV Stick 4K Select at £19.99, reduced from a stated £49.99 Amazon price, in an article published on 26 November 2025. That was a dated promotion, not proof of a permanent price.
If you find the Select near £20, the hardware cost is appealing. But check the live Amazon price and, more importantly, confirm Xbox app availability before ordering. The stick, a Game Pass subscription and a controller can make the complete setup considerably more expensive than the headline hardware price.
The compatibility question matters because the Select uses different software
The Fire TV Stick 4K Select was reported as using Amazon’s VegaOS rather than the Android-based Fire OS found on older Fire TV products. That difference means compatibility cannot safely be inferred from another Fire TV Stick. An Xbox app available on the Fire TV Stick 4K Max is not automatically available on the Select.
Before buying, check all four of these points:
- Search for the Xbox app in the Fire TV Stick 4K Select’s app store.
- Confirm that the app is available for your Amazon account and UK region.
- Check that Xbox’s current supported-device page lists the model, or otherwise confirms its availability.
- Make sure the device software is fully updated.
If the app does not appear, treat the Select as an unconfirmed Xbox device. Do not assume that sideloading an unofficial or incompatible app provides official support.

What you need to play Xbox games
For supported cloud gaming, you generally need:
- A Fire TV device supported in your region.
- A Microsoft account.
- An Xbox Game Pass plan that includes the games and cloud access you want. Selected free-to-play games may be available with a free Microsoft account.
- A compatible Bluetooth or USB controller.
- A stable broadband connection.
Xbox’s cloud-gaming guidance cites 10 Mbps as a minimum for mobile devices and around 20 Mbps for some larger-screen devices, while recommending 5GHz Wi-Fi where possible. These are useful connection guidelines, not a guarantee of responsive play: latency, jitter, interference, congestion and ISP routing can matter as much as download speed.
Compatible official Xbox controllers, PlayStation controllers and some third-party controllers may work, but the exact model must be compatible with both Xbox’s service and Fire TV. If you already own a suitable controller, the Select’s low hardware price is much more compelling.
How to try the setup
- Connect the Fire TV Stick to an HDMI port and complete Amazon’s setup.
- Install available system updates and connect to a stable 5GHz Wi-Fi network where practical.
- Open the Fire TV app store and search for “Xbox”.
- Install the official Xbox app only if it is offered for your device and region.
- Open the app and sign in with the Microsoft account linked to your Game Pass subscription.
- Put your controller into Bluetooth pairing mode and add it through the Fire TV Bluetooth settings.
- Start with a cloud-playable game and test responsiveness before committing to a long session.
Menu names can change between Fire TV software versions, so the important test is whether the official Xbox app appears and allows sign-in on the Select itself.

This is not a promise that every Xbox game will be available. Xbox says selected free-to-play games and most of the Game Pass library can be played through the cloud, while selected games that you own or buy separately can also be streamed. The catalogue depends on the game, plan, region and platform, and can change over time.

- Getting set up is easy – Plug in and connect to Wi-Fi for smooth streaming.
Use the live Xbox cloud-gaming library to check a particular title. Owning an Xbox game does not automatically mean that it is cloud-playable.
Cloud Gaming is not Remote Play
You do not necessarily need an Xbox console for Cloud Gaming. With a supported device, plan, controller and connection, eligible games run on Microsoft’s servers.
Remote Play is different: it streams games installed on your own Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S console. Remote Play therefore requires a console, whereas Cloud Gaming can provide console-free access to supported games.

The Select is a streaming client, not a small Xbox console. Cloud gaming can be convenient, but image quality and responsiveness depend on the network and service conditions. It should not be expected to match local console play for latency, resolution, audio options or consistency.

If video looks sharp but controls feel delayed, try a 5GHz network, move the router closer, reduce activity from other devices, restart the router and consider Ethernet or a compatible wired network setup. A less demanding game can help establish whether the issue is general network latency or specific to one title.
Do not buy it expecting lag-free competitive gaming. It is better suited to casual play, single-player games and households that value convenience over maximum performance.

It makes sense if you are an existing Game Pass subscriber, already own a compatible controller, want Xbox access on a second TV and have confirmed that the Xbox app is available on your Select in the UK. A price close to the historical £19.99 promotion would strengthen that case.
It is a poor choice if you are buying solely because of the old deal, do not have a controller, have unreliable broadband, need local or offline play, or expect Series X|S-level image quality. The ongoing subscription and controller may cost more than the stick itself.

Safer alternatives
If the Select does not show the Xbox app, consider a Fire TV model explicitly named on Xbox’s current UK support page:
- Fire TV Stick 4K Max, 1st Gen
- Fire TV Cube, 3rd Gen
- Fire TV Stick 4K Max, 2nd Gen
- Fire TV Stick 4K, 2nd Gen
These may cost more than the historic Select promotion, but their inclusion on the official list gives buyers a clearer compatibility position. A supported smart TV may also be more convenient if it already has the Xbox app. If you own an Xbox console, Remote Play avoids buying a separate cloud-gaming device, although it still depends on the console being available and powered as required.
The Select may also offer access to Amazon Luna, but that is a separate cloud-gaming service with its own catalogue and requirements. Luna availability does not prove that Xbox is supported.

Verdict
The Fire TV Stick 4K Select was a compelling idea: a small streaming stick that could put Xbox Cloud Gaming on another TV for very little money. The reported £19.99 promotion made the hardware particularly attractive.
Today, however, the buying decision hinges on verification. The Select was announced for Xbox support, but it is not clearly named on the current official UK Xbox device list. Buy it for Xbox only if the official app is available on your exact device and region. Otherwise, choose a Fire TV model that Xbox explicitly lists rather than relying on an old price or an announcement that may not yet represent a completed rollout.
