Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallThe quickest fix is a clean Bluetooth re-pair: charge the controller, put it into rapid-flash pairing mode, remove every old Xbox controller entry from Windows, restart Bluetooth or the PC, then add it again. If the controller works over USB-C but not Bluetooth, the PC’s adapter, driver, interference, or the controller’s Bluetooth hardware is the likely problem—not necessarily the whole controller.
These steps apply to compatible Xbox controllers on Windows 10 and Windows 11. First, confirm that your specific controller actually supports Bluetooth.

1. Confirm that your controller supports Bluetooth
Not every Xbox-branded controller is a normal Bluetooth pairing device. Current Xbox Wireless Controllers generally support Bluetooth with Windows 10 and Windows 11, and many—but not all—Xbox One controller revisions do as well.
- Xbox Series X|S controllers: generally support Bluetooth.
- Xbox One controllers: Bluetooth support depends on the hardware revision; older models may require USB or an Xbox Wireless Adapter.
- Xbox 360 Wireless Controllers: do not pair as ordinary Bluetooth devices. They require the appropriate wireless receiver or a wired connection.
- Third-party controllers: may use a different pairing method and may appear as a generic Bluetooth gamepad.
A Pair button does not, by itself, prove that a controller contains Bluetooth hardware. Check the exact model, its documentation, and whether it is genuine, refurbished, or third-party. Also check whether your PC has built-in Bluetooth. If it does not, you need a compatible USB Bluetooth adapter or an Xbox Wireless Adapter.

2. Try the clean re-pair first
Stale or duplicate Bluetooth profiles are among the most common reasons Windows shows a controller but will not connect to it.
- Turn on the controller with the Xbox button.
- Press and hold the Pair button on the controller’s top edge for about three seconds.
- Release it when the Xbox button begins flashing rapidly. Rapid flashing means the controller is discoverable.
- Remove all old or duplicate Xbox controller entries from Windows using the instructions below.
- Turn Bluetooth off, wait several seconds, and turn it back on. Restart the PC if the device still appears stuck.
- Open the Bluetooth pairing screen and add the controller again.
Windows 11
- Open Start → Settings → Bluetooth & devices.
- Find Xbox Wireless Controller in the device list.
- Select the … menu and choose Remove device.
- Remove duplicate or old Xbox controller entries as well.
- Select Add device → Bluetooth.
- Choose Xbox Wireless Controller.
Wait for the Xbox button to stop flashing and remain illuminated. A solid Xbox light normally indicates an established connection.
Windows 10
- Open Start → Settings → Devices.
- Select Bluetooth & other devices.
- Select the controller and choose Remove device.
- Restart Bluetooth or Windows.
- Choose Add Bluetooth or other device → Bluetooth, then select the controller.
Microsoft’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance also recommends removing a device that appears in Windows but refuses to connect, then adding it again.
3. Check the controller’s power and pairing state
- Replace AA batteries or fully charge the rechargeable battery pack.
- Turn the controller off and on again.
- If it has been unused for a long time, test with fresh batteries.
- Do not treat a lit Xbox button as proof that the batteries can sustain Bluetooth pairing.
- Keep the controller close to the PC during setup.
Normal or slow flashing can mean the controller is searching for a previous host or is not yet in full discovery mode. Hold Pair until the light flashes rapidly. If the controller connects and immediately disconnects, suspect stale pairing data, low power, drivers, firmware, interference, or another device reclaiming the connection.
4. Stop another device from taking the connection
A controller recently used with an Xbox console, phone, tablet, or second PC may attempt to reconnect to that host.

- Turn off Bluetooth on nearby phones, tablets, and laptops.
- If practical, turn off the Xbox console or move it out of range.
- Temporarily remove the controller from other Bluetooth device lists.
- Put the controller into rapid-flash pairing mode.
- Pair it only with the target PC.
5. Run Windows Bluetooth diagnostics
On Windows 11, open the Get Help app and search for the Bluetooth troubleshooter for a device that will not connect. Follow its automated checks. Microsoft currently directs Windows 11 users to Get Help for this diagnosis; Windows 10 has different menus and troubleshooting interfaces.
Use Microsoft’s Bluetooth troubleshooting page if you need the current steps for your Windows version.
6. Update Windows and the PC’s Bluetooth driver
Install Windows updates
- Open Start → Settings → Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates and restart the PC.
- Test pairing again.
Update through Device Manager
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Bluetooth.
- Right-click the Bluetooth adapter.
- Select Update driver → Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
If Windows says the best driver is already installed, visit the official support page for your laptop, desktop, motherboard, or Bluetooth adapter manufacturer. The manufacturer may provide a newer or more suitable driver than Windows detects automatically. Avoid generic driver-download sites and driver-updater utilities.
Reinstall or roll back the adapter driver
If updating does not help, right-click the Bluetooth adapter in Device Manager, select Uninstall device, and restart Windows so it can reinstall the driver. If Bluetooth stopped working after a recent update, open the adapter’s Properties → Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver if that option is available. Microsoft documents these procedures in its Bluetooth driver guidance.
7. Update the controller firmware over USB
Use the official Xbox Accessories app rather than trying to update firmware through Bluetooth.

- Connect the controller to the PC with a known-good, data-capable USB-C cable.
- Open or install Xbox Accessories from the Microsoft Store.
- Check for a controller firmware update.
- Install it, then disconnect the cable.
- Remove the old Bluetooth pairing from Windows.
- Restart Bluetooth or Windows and pair again.
Microsoft notes that certain Xbox Accessories functions on Windows require a compatible USB-C cable, sold separately. A firmware update may improve compatibility, but it is not guaranteed to fix every Bluetooth fault. If the app does not detect the controller wirelessly, USB is the correct way to perform the check.
If Xbox Accessories cannot see the controller, try another USB port and another data cable, then restart the app. If neither Windows nor the app detects it over USB, suspect the cable, USB port, or controller hardware.
8. Reduce interference and improve the Bluetooth signal
- Move the controller closer to the PC.
- Temporarily disconnect unnecessary Bluetooth devices.
- Move USB 3.0 storage, hubs, and wireless dongles away from the Bluetooth antenna.
- On a desktop, make sure the motherboard’s supplied Wi-Fi/Bluetooth antenna is attached.
- Move a USB Bluetooth adapter away from the PC chassis with a short USB extension cable.
- Test without a crowded USB hub.
- Temporarily disable other wireless peripherals.
Unshielded USB devices connected to USB 3.0 ports can interfere with Bluetooth. Changing ports is an isolation test, not a guaranteed fix.
9. Use USB-C to separate a Bluetooth problem from a controller problem
Connect the controller with a known-good data-capable USB-C cable and try it in another USB port. USB avoids pairing, radio interference, and the PC’s Bluetooth stack.
- USB works, Bluetooth fails: investigate the PC Bluetooth adapter, its driver, interference, or the controller’s Bluetooth radio.
- USB and Bluetooth work on another PC: the original PC is the likely source of the fault.
- Bluetooth fails on multiple devices but USB works: suspect the controller’s Bluetooth hardware or firmware.
- USB fails everywhere: suspect the cable, controller port, or controller hardware.
USB-C is also a reliable fallback for gaming, but the cable can move or disconnect during play. Charge-only cables will not provide the data connection required for this test.

10. If Windows connects but the game does not
A successful Bluetooth connection does not guarantee that every PC game will recognize or map the controller. Standard Xbox controllers generally present as XInput devices, but game, launcher, and remapping settings can interfere.
- Test buttons, triggers, thumbsticks, and vibration outside the game using Windows controller properties where available.
- Use the game launcher’s controller test, such as Steam’s controller input test.
- Check whether the game supports XInput.
- Temporarily disable controller-remapping software that may intercept input.
- Check Steam Input or the launcher’s controller settings if the particular game needs it.
- Restart the game after pairing.
- Try another game.
Steam Input is not automatically required for a standard Xbox controller. If the device works in Windows and another game, the remaining problem is probably game-specific rather than Bluetooth pairing.

The controller does not appear under Add device
- Confirm Bluetooth is enabled on the PC.
- Confirm the Xbox button is lit.
- Hold Pair until the button flashes rapidly.
- Charge or replace the batteries.
- Turn off nearby Bluetooth hosts.
- Restart Bluetooth and Windows.
- Confirm the controller model supports Bluetooth.

Windows says “Try connecting your device again”
Remove the controller and duplicate entries, restart Windows, update Windows and the Bluetooth driver, update controller firmware over USB, and then pair from scratch.
It connects and immediately disconnects
Start with fresh batteries and a clean re-pair. Then update firmware and the Bluetooth driver, turn off nearby hosts, reduce interference, and test USB. If the problem follows the controller to multiple devices, its Bluetooth hardware may be failing.

The controller works only through USB
That result is useful: the controller is at least partly functional. Test it on another Bluetooth-equipped PC or phone. If it fails wirelessly everywhere but works by cable, replacement may be justified. If it works elsewhere, repair the original PC’s Bluetooth setup instead.

Desktop and laptop checks
Desktop PCs
Some motherboards include Bluetooth but require the external Wi-Fi/Bluetooth antenna to be installed. Bluetooth may also be disabled in BIOS or by a hardware setting. If you add a USB Bluetooth dongle while built-in Bluetooth remains active, temporarily disable one adapter to prevent conflicts.
Laptops
Check Airplane mode, the laptop’s wireless-control software, OEM power-management settings, and the laptop manufacturer’s Bluetooth driver. A recent firmware or Windows update can require an updated OEM driver.
Bluetooth alternatives
USB-C cable
This is usually the fastest and cheapest fallback. It avoids Bluetooth pairing and interference and can enable firmware updates. Use a data-capable cable and a reliable USB port.

Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows
The Xbox Wireless Adapter uses Xbox Wireless rather than ordinary Bluetooth. It can be a sensible option when the PC lacks Bluetooth, has poor antenna placement, or has persistent Bluetooth driver problems. It is not interchangeable with a generic Bluetooth dongle, and it is unnecessary if USB or Bluetooth already works.
Bluetooth can be convenient, but its reliability depends on the PC adapter, drivers, antenna placement, interference, and controller compatibility. Controller headset behavior can also differ by connection method; Microsoft’s documented Xbox One configuration notes that the 3.5-mm headset jack is not supported over Bluetooth in that configuration.
When should you buy an adapter or replace the controller?
Do not buy a replacement immediately. First use the existing controller by USB, update its firmware, update the PC Bluetooth driver, and cross-test it on another device.
- Buy an Xbox Wireless Adapter: the controller works, but the PC’s Bluetooth is absent, unreliable, or difficult to position.
- Buy a Bluetooth adapter: the PC lacks Bluetooth and you specifically want ordinary Bluetooth pairing. Adapter and driver quality vary, so compatibility is not guaranteed.
- Replace the controller: Bluetooth fails across multiple compatible devices, the Pair button is damaged, or the controller has confirmed hardware damage.
- Do not replace the controller: it works by Bluetooth on another PC or works reliably over USB while only the original PC fails.
Microsoft’s official controller listing showed a price of $64.99 when last observed, but prices and availability change. Treat the current listing as the authority before purchasing.
