Steam Game Recording is available to everyone: how to enable it and save clips

Steam’s built-in Game Recording feature is available to all users. Here’s how background recording, clips, exports, Steam Deck support, and alternatives such as OBS and NVIDIA App compare.

Steam Game Recording has been available to all Steam users since November 5, 2024. Built into the Steam client and Steam Deck, it can continuously retain recent gameplay in the background or record only when you tell it to. You can then mark a moment, turn part of the timeline into a clip, save it in Steam, share it, or export it as a normal video file.

Valve first introduced the feature as a beta on June 26, 2024. It is useful for quick highlights and “I wish I had recorded that” moments, but it does not replace OBS, NVIDIA App capture, or a capture card for streaming and advanced production.

What Steam Game Recording does

Steam Game Recording is a recording system integrated into Steam rather than a separate application. Its main modes are:

  • Record in Background: Steam keeps recent gameplay up to the retention limit you choose. This is the best option for saving an unexpected victory, funny moment, or close call after it happens.
  • Record on Demand: Steam records only after you start it. This suits full sessions, tutorials, campaigns, and anyone who does not want temporary footage constantly using storage.

The feature also provides a recording timeline, manual markers, game-specific event markers where supported, quick-capture shortcuts, clip creation, sharing, and export options. Valve specifically highlighted timeline integration for games including Counter-Strike 2 and Dota 2. Those markers are not automatic for every game: other titles may provide only a video timeline and markers that you add yourself.

  • Wi-Fi 6E
  • 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
  • Carrying case with removable liner

Valve’s November 5, 2024 announcement confirmed the general release, while the June 2024 beta announcement introduced the system.

How to enable Steam Game Recording

  1. Open Steam.
  2. Select Steam → Settings on desktop.
  3. Open Game Recording.
  4. Choose Don’t record, Record in Background, or Record on Demand.
  5. Set the retention duration, recording location, audio options, and shortcut keys.

You can also open the Steam Overlay while playing and look for the Game Recording tab or recording controls. Steam’s labels and menu placement can change with client updates, so search Settings or the Overlay for “Game Recording” if the wording differs. The official Steam Game Recording FAQ is the best reference for the current interface.

Which mode should you use?

Mode Best for Main trade-off
Record in Background Instant replays and unexpected highlights Temporary footage uses storage and older footage can be overwritten
Record on Demand Long sessions, tutorials, and planned recordings You must remember to start recording
Don’t record Games or situations where you do not need capture No replay is available later

How to save a gameplay moment

A timeline marker is not the same thing as a saved clip. A marker identifies a point in the recording; a clip is a selected section that you preserve.

  1. Open the Steam Overlay or Steam’s recordings area.
  2. Open the relevant recording timeline.
  3. Add a marker at the important moment, or move the timeline handles manually.
  4. Select the start and end points for the clip.
  5. Use Steam’s clip controls to save the selection.

Save important clips promptly when using background recording. The background window is temporary: once it reaches its configured limit, older footage may be discarded or overwritten.

How to export or share a clip

After creating a clip, Steam can keep it in its recordings area, share it through Steam, send it to another supported device or phone, or export it as a video file for editing, messaging, or uploading elsewhere. The general workflow is:

  1. Open the recording or saved clip in Steam.
  2. Choose the section you want to keep.
  3. Create and save the clip.
  4. Select Share or Export.
  5. Choose the destination or file location.

Do not assume that every Steam installation exports with the same file extension, codec, resolution, or maximum quality. Those details can vary with Steam client version, operating system, recording settings, and available hardware encoding.

Using Game Recording on Steam Deck

Steam Game Recording was included in the Steam Deck stable client update that brought the feature to general availability. It is particularly convenient on Deck because it uses Steam’s existing Overlay and media workflow instead of requiring a separate recording utility.

Controls and shortcut behavior can differ between desktop Steam and Steam Deck’s Game Mode. Open the Overlay during a game and look for the Game Recording controls, then customize the available shortcut if the default combination is inconvenient.

Storage deserves extra attention on Deck. Internal space and microSD capacity are limited, and a long, high-quality background window can consume space quickly. Before enabling it:

  • Start with a short retention period.
  • Check where recordings are being stored.
  • Monitor free space on the internal drive or microSD card.
  • Save important clips before the temporary timeline is recycled.
  • Test the chosen storage device with a short recording.

Performance and storage use vary with the game, resolution, frame rate, quality settings, encoder, and storage device. There is no single storage requirement that applies to every Steam Deck.

Compatibility and platform limits

Steam Game Recording is designed for games running through Steam, but recording behavior still depends on the Steam Overlay and the game’s rendering and anti-cheat setup. A game may record normally without offering rich event markers. Non-Steam games added as shortcuts are not guaranteed to behave identically and should be tested individually.

The client update associated with the general release no longer supported Windows 7 or Windows 8, and it ended support for macOS 10.13 and 10.14. Modern Steam client requirements therefore matter independently of whether a particular game can be captured.

This ensures stable online play and rapid updates, making it the most reliable wireless gaming handheld for modern high-speed home networks.

We’ve added a dedicated Bluetooth antenna to improve connections for multiple controllers. Whether using the built-in trackpads or the included external controller, this allows for precision play in everything from FPS to complex strategy games.

Linux compatibility can vary with the distribution, graphics driver, Proton configuration, GPU, and encoder. Avoid assuming that a recording setup that works on Windows or Steam Deck will behave identically on every Linux system.

Steam Game Recording versus other capture tools

Tool Strongest use case What it does better than Steam’s recorder Trade-off
Steam Game Recording Quick clips from Steam games and Steam Deck Steam-integrated timeline, background replay, and simple sharing Limited production and source-control features
OBS Studio Streaming and creator-focused recording Scenes, webcams, overlays, transitions, multiple sources, separate audio tracks, and capture devices More setup and configuration
NVIDIA App Lightweight replay and capture on compatible NVIDIA systems GPU-assisted capture and recording of supported windowed, borderless, and desktop content Requires compatible NVIDIA hardware and is not a replacement for a scene-based production tool
Xbox Game Bar Simple Windows-integrated recording Convenient capture outside Steam No Steam-specific timeline or sharing workflow
Capture card Console or external HDMI capture Records sources that are not running as a Steam PC game Requires additional hardware and setup

OBS Studio is free and offers substantially more control, but it is unnecessary if all you want is a short replay from a Steam game. NVIDIA App capture is a sensible alternative for people with compatible NVIDIA hardware who want lightweight replay or desktop capture. A capture card is the relevant solution for console footage or another external HDMI source; Steam Game Recording is not designed for that job.

Troubleshooting Steam Game Recording

The Game Recording option is missing

  1. Update Steam to the current client.
  2. Check Steam → Settings for Game Recording.
  3. Open the in-game Steam Overlay and look for its recording controls.
  4. Restart Steam after updating.
  5. Confirm that the operating system still meets the client’s requirements.

Recording does not start

Confirm that recording is enabled and that you are using the correct mode. Background recording should be configured before launching the game; on-demand recording requires its start shortcut or Overlay control. Check that the Steam Overlay works in the game, then test another Steam title. If the game disables or interferes with the Overlay, Steam recording may not work correctly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The video is black

Try a different rendering mode if the game offers one, update the graphics driver, restart Steam and the game, and test hardware versus software encoding if those choices are available. A short test recording is safer than discovering the problem after a long session.

  • 512 GB NVMe SSD: Fast storage for quicker game load times and space for larger game libraries.
  • OLED Display: 1200x800 resolution with deep contrasts and vibrant colors for a captivating visual experience.
  • Custom AMD APU: Power-efficient Zen 2 CPU and RDNA 2 GPU for desktop-level gaming performance.
  • Expandable Storage: Add more space with a microSD card slot, ensuring you can bring even more games with you.
  • Versatile Controls: With built-in thumbsticks, trackpads, and touchscreen controls, you have full control over your gaming experience.

Game or microphone audio is missing

Review Steam’s recording audio settings and confirm the selected output and microphone devices. Also check the operating system’s active audio devices and the game’s own audio configuration. Steam recording should not be assumed to capture every audio source or application exactly as configured in a full OBS setup.

A clip will not export

Make sure the timeline selection has been saved as a clip rather than left as temporary recording data. Check the destination drive’s free space and permissions, then try a shorter clip. Restarting Steam and exporting a newly saved clip can also distinguish a one-off client problem from a broader compatibility issue.

The recording fills the drive

Shorten the background retention window, lower the recording quality if available, move the recording location to a larger drive, and delete or export clips you no longer need. This is especially important on Steam Deck, where internal storage and microSD capacity are constrained.

Is Steam Game Recording good enough?

For most players who want quick Steam highlights, the answer is yes. It is built in, supports background replay and on-demand recording, works with Steam Deck, and avoids installing another recorder. Its strongest advantage is convenience.

It is not a universal replacement for OBS or GPU-specific capture tools. Choose OBS for livestreaming, multiple scenes, webcams, alerts, overlays, separate audio tracks, detailed encoder control, or capture-card input. Choose NVIDIA App capture when compatible NVIDIA hardware and lightweight replay are the priority. Use Xbox Game Bar when you need a simple Windows recorder for games or applications outside Steam.

Before relying on any recorder for an important session, test a short clip on the specific game, operating system, GPU, audio setup, and storage device you plan to use.
