Microsoft’s Xbox Development Kit (XDK) reportedly rose from $1,500 to $2,000 in October 2025—a 33% increase, according to The Verge. Microsoft’s public developer pages do not confirm that price or publish a current country-by-country schedule, so $2,000 should not be treated as a verified October 2026 price.
What is the reported new Xbox dev kit price?
The Verge reported on October 21, 2025, that Microsoft raised the XDK price from $1,500 to $2,000, effective immediately. The Verge described the change as a 33% increase. These are figures reported from an announcement seen by the publication, not prices on a public Microsoft retail page.
The Verge said the increase applied to developers in the United States, Europe, and elsewhere. Microsoft’s public onboarding material does not provide a full regional price list, and the public sources reviewed do not establish whether prices or terms vary by developer.
Why did Microsoft raise the price?
In the announcement reported by The Verge, Microsoft said, “The adjustment reflects macroeconomic developments.” The publication discussed tariffs and the timing of other Xbox price changes as context, but the quoted explanation does not identify a more specific cause for the XDK adjustment.

The announcement also said Microsoft remained committed to providing high-quality development tools and support. That assurance does not change the practical impact: studios seeking the specialized hardware faced a higher reported purchase price.
What makes an XDK different from a retail Xbox Series X?
An XDK is specialized hardware for building and testing Xbox games, not a consumer console with a different label. The Verge’s October 2025 report described the kit as having 40GB of GDDR6 memory, compared with 16GB in the consumer Xbox Series X, as well as extra compute capacity and development-focused controls and tools.

The Verge’s hardware comparison is the source for the specifications above; Microsoft’s public pages reviewed do not separately confirm those hardware figures. A retail Xbox Series X is therefore not an interchangeable lower-cost way to obtain XDK functionality.
Who can obtain an Xbox development kit?
Microsoft’s official Xbox onboarding guide describes an application and onboarding route for studios. It is not an ordinary consumer checkout. Microsoft says partner registration and applying to ID@Xbox carry no fee, but that does not make the physical kit free.

- Apply to ID@Xbox and complete the onboarding steps, including providing a game concept and entering the relevant agreements.
- After onboarding, use the access Microsoft provides to the Entertainment Developer Store (EDS). Microsoft says the ID@Xbox team makes initial kits available to order; studios seeking more than their available allocation are directed to contact ID Setup.
Microsoft says setting up an EDS account takes about a week. Its public onboarding page also describes shipping timing after payment, but does not state the kit price. The guide’s route and timing are program information, not a public promise that every applicant will be approved or receive a kit on a particular schedule.
Does Microsoft publish the current price by country?
Not in the public onboarding pages reviewed. The $2,000 figure is The Verge’s report of the October 2025 adjustment, while Microsoft’s public documentation explains how eligible studios reach EDS without listing a current price, regional schedule, or developer-specific terms. Studios with EDS access should check the store or confirm the amount with Microsoft before budgeting or ordering.

Is the GDK the same thing as the XDK?
No. The XDK is the physical Xbox Development Kit hardware. The GDK is the software development kit; Microsoft describes the Gaming eXtensions Development Kit (GXDK) as the GDK version of the XDK. Keeping the terms distinct matters: software tools and access to development hardware are related parts of game development, but they are not the same product.
