Halo 2 is the strongest pick for the hardest Halo campaign on solo Legendary. Below it, the order is much less certain: player rankings disagree about the middle and easier entries, and there is no comparable set of completion times or death counts across the series. This is an editorial ranking of the eight released mainline campaigns, not an official or measured difficulty scale.

The ranking covers the six campaigns in Halo: The Master Chief Collection—Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo 2 Anniversary, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, Halo: Reach and Halo 4—plus Halo 5: Guardians and Halo Infinite. It excludes Halo Wars and other spin-offs. The order is a best-fit synthesis of player discussions, with confidence strongest at the top and weaker among the other placements.

The most defensible choice for hardest overall. Players in the discussions reviewed repeatedly single it out, giving it a stronger hardest-campaign reputation than any other entry. That is a community impression, not a measured comparison.

Halo: Reach
Place it near the hard end, but not as a settled second place. Players disagree about how it compares with Combat Evolved, Halo 4 and newer campaigns.

One recent player’s ranking puts it in the harder half, below Reach and Combat Evolved. That is a single player’s view, not a broad consensus.

A tentative middle-to-hard placement. The discussions reviewed do not compare it consistently, and one recent player excluded it from their own ranking because they had not played it on Legendary.

Its placement varies substantially: some solo rankings put it below Reach and above Halo 3, while a recent player ranked it third-hardest.

Several players place it toward the easier end, but that view is not unanimous. Its position relative to the middle entries is uncertain.

Why the order is only a guide
Legendary is the highest standard campaign difficulty described in the referenced Halo material. Its precise mechanics and descriptions vary by game; the current Halo Support breakdown of difficulty settings applies specifically to Halo: Campaign Evolved, not every older title.
The ranking means solo play on standard Legendary. Co-op changes the experience, and challenge runs with skulls or other modifiers are not directly comparable to an unmodified run. Familiarity with a game’s encounters and an individual player’s strengths also affect how difficult it feels. The player discussions themselves show disagreement, especially below Halo 2; they do not provide comparable completion-time or death-count data, nor do they establish a population-wide consensus.

Difficulty can also mean different things: a campaign may feel demanding throughout, or be remembered for a few especially punishing encounters. The discussions used here do not provide comparable evidence to score those separately, so the ordered list should not be read as a mission-by-mission analysis.
Where the games fit
Halo: The Master Chief Collection contains six of the campaigns in this ranking and supports solo and cooperative play. For a run that matches this list, select Legendary and play solo; keep skulls and other challenge modifiers separate when comparing your experience. Halo 5: Guardians and Halo Infinite are included in the ranking but are not part of that six-campaign collection.
Halo: Campaign Evolved is a separate release and is not included in the ordered list. Halo Support describes four traditional difficulty settings for that game and says difficulty changes received damage, enemy aggression, enemy numbers and enemy health. It also cautions that modifiers may affect achievements. Those details apply to Campaign Evolved; they should not be generalized to every game in the ranking.
