The best Xbox picture comes from the highest resolution-and-refresh-rate combination supported by every part of your setup: console, television, HDMI input, cable and any receiver, switch or extender between them. On Xbox Series X|S, open Settings > General > TV & display options, confirm the output, then inspect 4K TV details. Enable HDR, VRR and low-latency features only when the connected TV and HDMI path report support.
Put the television in its gaming picture mode, enable its enhanced HDMI mode when required, and run the Xbox HDR calibration tool while that HDR gaming mode is active. There is no universal set of brightness, contrast or color numbers that is correct for every TV.

What “best picture” means on Xbox
Picture quality is a compatibility problem before it is a calibration problem. The Xbox can offer a video mode only when the entire signal chain can carry it. That chain includes:
- The Xbox model and its available output features.
- The TV’s panel and video processing.
- The particular HDMI port used by the console; ports on the same TV can have different capabilities.
- The HDMI cable.
- Any AV receiver, soundbar pass-through, switch, splitter or extender in the path.
A television advertised as 4K at 60 Hz does not automatically accept 4K at 120 Hz. Selecting 120 Hz in the Xbox menu also does not make every game render at 120 frames per second. The game, console workload and display mode determine the actual frame rate.

Use the Xbox’s compatibility report and the TV’s specification for the exact input in use. Do not choose a lower output simply because a more expensive television claims a feature; choose the mode that the complete connection can sustain reliably.
Know which Xbox and TV combination you have
Xbox Series X|S
Series X|S consoles support output up to 120 Hz, as well as Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) and Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM). These are conditional features: the TV, HDMI port, cable and any intervening equipment must support the selected mode. A compatible display may still expose only some combinations of resolution, refresh rate, HDR and variable refresh.
Xbox One S and other legacy consoles
Microsoft’s Xbox One S guidance describes a 4K path using a 4K television with HDR10 support. Where the signal passes through another device, that device must support 4K UHD and HDCP 2.2 for the described 4K content path. The exact menus and available modes depend on the Xbox model and its software version, so verify what your console reports rather than assuming that a Series X|S option exists on an older system.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Setup question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| What is the console model? | Series X|S offers up to 120 Hz, VRR and ALLM; Xbox One S guidance centers on 4K, HDR10 and compatible pass-through. |
| Which HDMI port is connected? | TV ports can have different bandwidth and HDR or high-refresh capabilities. |
| Is an intermediate device in the path? | Every receiver, switch or extender must support the same resolution, refresh, HDR and copy-protection requirements. |
| Does the cable carry the chosen mode? | A cable can become the limiting component even when the console and TV support the feature. |
Set the Xbox output first
On a Series X|S, use this path:
- Open Settings.
- Select General.
- Open TV & display options.
- Review Resolution and select the highest resolution the connected setup supports.
- Review Refresh rate and select the highest stable rate that the TV and HDMI path support.
- Open 4K TV details and read the capability report for the current connection.
The 4K TV details screen is more useful than an assumption based on the TV’s product name. It shows which combinations the Xbox has detected through the active connection. If a desired mode is not listed, treat that as a compatibility clue and investigate the port, cable and pass-through equipment before changing picture controls.
Choosing between 60 Hz and 120 Hz
Use 4K at 60 Hz when that is the highest 4K mode the TV or signal path supports. Use 4K at 120 Hz only when the 4K TV details screen and the TV’s specification for that HDMI input both support it. A 120 Hz setting is a display refresh option, not a promise that every game will produce 120 frames per second.

If the image is unstable at a selected mode, step back to the highest mode that remains reliable. A steady 4K/60 signal is preferable to a flickering or repeatedly blank 4K/120 connection.
Enable the TV features that expose the Xbox signal
Turn on the enhanced HDMI mode for the correct input
Many televisions ship with standard HDMI operation enabled until a high-bandwidth or enhanced mode is selected. The label varies by manufacturer and model. Samsung documentation, for example, uses Input Signal Plus, also described as HDMI UHD Color, for applicable inputs. Other televisions use names such as enhanced format, deep color or high-bandwidth mode.
Open the TV settings for the exact HDMI input occupied by the Xbox and enable its enhanced mode if the manufacturer requires one for 4K, HDR or high refresh. Do not enable a setting on an unused port and assume it changes the active connection. Menu names and supported combinations vary by model.
Use Game Mode when latency matters
TVs normally process an incoming picture with sharpening, motion handling, noise reduction and other operations. Game Mode reduces that processing so controller input can reach the screen with less delay. It is a latency-oriented mode, not a universal color-accuracy preset.
Because Game Mode can alter or remove other processing controls, compare the picture in the mode you intend to use before calibrating HDR. If the TV offers separate picture modes for SDR and HDR, configure the gaming mode for each signal type you actually use.

Understand ALLM
ALLM can switch a compatible TV into its low-latency mode automatically when the Xbox signals that a game is active. It works only when the console, TV and HDMI path all support it. If the television does not support ALLM, select Game Mode manually when you want the lower-processing profile.
Configure HDR without guessing at numbers
HDR depends on both the Xbox output and the TV’s HDR mode. Enable HDR on the Xbox only when the television and connection report support. Then select the TV’s gaming HDR picture mode before calibration; calibrating in a different picture mode can produce a result that does not match the mode used during play.
Xbox Series X|S HDR calibration
- Open the Xbox display settings and launch the HDR calibration tool.
- Follow each on-screen pattern exactly.
- Adjust the TV’s relevant controls only as instructed by the pattern and the TV’s own gaming HDR mode.
- Finish the walkthrough, then check a game that offers its own HDR controls.
The Xbox tool helps tune advanced picture settings for games, but it does not replace every game’s separate HDR adjustment. If a particular game provides an in-game brightness or paper-white control, follow that game’s instructions after the console-level calibration.
Xbox One S calibration
Xbox One S includes an HDTV calibration walkthrough for brightness, contrast and color. Use it with the TV mode in which you play. Do not copy numeric settings from another television: panel behavior, room lighting, HDR implementation and available controls differ.

The Xbox does not offer 4K
- Open Settings > General > TV & display options > 4K TV details and read the reported limitation.
- Check that the Xbox is connected to the TV port specified for 4K or enhanced operation.
- Enable the TV’s enhanced HDMI setting for that port.
- Remove or bypass a receiver, switch or extender temporarily.
- Connect the Xbox directly to the TV with the console’s supplied cable where applicable.
If direct connection restores 4K, the intermediate device or its configuration is the bottleneck. For an Xbox One S 4K content path, Microsoft’s guidance specifies 4K UHD and HDCP 2.2 support for the pass-through device.
HDR is missing or the picture looks wrong
- Verify that the active HDMI port supports HDR and that its enhanced mode is enabled.
- Check that the TV has switched to its HDR gaming picture mode.
- Confirm HDR support in the Xbox’s 4K TV details report.
- Run the HDR calibration tool again in the mode you actually use for games.
Do not compensate for a missing HDR signal by forcing random brightness or contrast values. First restore the correct signal path.
120 Hz is unavailable
- Check the TV specification for 4K at 120 Hz on the specific input, not merely the panel’s headline refresh rate.
- Confirm the cable and every pass-through component support the selected mode.
- Try the Xbox directly on the TV using the supplied cable.
- Check the Series X|S 4K TV details screen again after changing the port or path.
A TV that supports 4K at 60 Hz can legitimately report no 4K/120 option.

- Return to the last stable resolution-and-refresh combination.
- Test a direct Xbox-to-TV connection.
- Recheck the enhanced HDMI setting and cable seating.
- Reconnect the receiver, switch or extender only after the direct connection is stable.
- If problems continue, disable VRR temporarily as a diagnostic step.
Disabling VRR in this situation is a troubleshooting test, not a general recommendation to leave VRR off.
Best Value

When a different HDMI cable is justified
Do not buy a replacement cable merely because a higher-priced cable claims better picture quality. If the current link works at the desired resolution, refresh rate and HDR mode, a new cable does not create extra image detail.
Consider an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable only after testing shows that the existing cable limits a mode supported by both the Xbox and TV. Before buying, test the console’s supplied cable, the correct TV port and a direct connection that removes pass-through equipment. The cable is a conditional fix for a demonstrated link limitation, not a universal Xbox upgrade.
Picture-quality checks after setup
Once the signal is working, verify the result with the controls that matter:
Recommended Free Tools
- Confirm the Xbox reports the intended resolution and refresh rate.
- Confirm the TV identifies the incoming signal as HDR when HDR content is running.
- Confirm Game Mode is active if low input delay is your priority.
- Check that ALLM changes the TV mode automatically only if the equipment supports it.
- Use the Xbox HDR calibration patterns instead of copying settings from another model.
- Recheck the TV’s SDR and HDR picture modes separately if the television stores them independently.
Keep a note of the stable port, cable and intermediate-device arrangement. If you later add a receiver or switch, test the complete chain again; replacing one component can change which modes the Xbox detects.
A practical setup checklist
For a Series X|S connected directly to a modern TV
- Use the TV input identified for the required bandwidth.
- Enable that input’s enhanced HDMI mode.
- Set the Xbox resolution and refresh rate under TV & display options.
- Read 4K TV details.
- Enable HDR, VRR and ALLM only when reported as supported.
- Select Game Mode and run HDR calibration in the TV’s gaming HDR mode.
For a Series X|S routed through a receiver, switch or extender
- Verify that every device supports the same resolution, refresh, HDR and VRR requirements.
- Check the TV’s enhanced mode on the final HDMI input.
- Use the 4K TV details report to identify which capability disappears.
- Test a direct connection with the supplied cable before purchasing anything.
For an Xbox One S 4K/HDR setup
- Use a 4K TV with HDR10 support.
- Confirm that any pass-through device supports 4K UHD and HDCP 2.2 for the described 4K content path.
- Run the console’s HDTV calibration walkthrough in the TV mode used for play.
- Verify the TV input and cable before changing picture values.
Bottom line for the best Xbox picture
Start with the highest mode the entire connection supports, not the highest number printed on the TV box. Series X|S owners should use TV & display options and 4K TV details to confirm the real connection, then enable the TV’s enhanced HDMI mode, Game Mode and supported HDR, VRR or ALLM features. Calibrate HDR with the Xbox tool in the TV’s gaming HDR mode. When a mode is missing or unstable, test the port, cable and pass-through path—then change hardware only when that test identifies the limiting component.
