Xbox Full Screen Experience is a controller-first gaming interface for Windows 11 that puts your library and games front and center. It can make a Windows handheld feel more console-like, but it is not handheld-only: Microsoft has also announced its rollout to laptops, desktops, and tablets in select markets. Availability depends on your device and market.
What the Xbox Full Screen Experience does
The interface opens Windows gaming in a full-screen, controller-optimized view designed to reduce desktop distractions. Microsoft says players can browse games from Xbox, Game Pass, Xbox Play Anywhere, and other popular storefronts, launch games, use Game Bar, and switch between games and open apps or return to the Windows desktop. In 2026 rollout communications, Microsoft calls this experience Xbox mode.
That makes it primarily a change to how you navigate and move between games and Windows—not a separate operating system or a requirement to replace your PC. It is useful when you want to play with a controller instead of reaching for a mouse and keyboard.
Is it available on your Windows 11 device?
Availability has changed over time. On November 24, 2025, Microsoft said the experience was available on Windows 11 gaming handhelds and in preview for laptops, desktops, and tablets. A November 21, 2025 Windows Insider post described that PC preview on the Dev and Beta channels, with a phased rollout.

In March and April 2026, Microsoft announced Xbox mode rolling out to Windows 11 PCs in select markets. Those announcements do not establish that every market or individual device has received it. Check your own PC for the feature rather than assuming it is available universally.

- Open Task View and select the full screen experience.
- Open Game Bar settings and choose the full screen experience.
- Press Win + F11.
Microsoft documented these controls for the preview; labels and availability may differ as the rollout evolves. To leave the experience, the same post listed the Windows key, Task View, and Game Bar settings as return-to-desktop options.
Does it make more sense on a handheld?
A handheld combines the interface with a built-in screen and controls, so you can browse and launch games without setting up a separate controller or display. Microsoft said the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X shipped with the experience, and that it is available on those and other Windows 11 handhelds in market.

On a laptop, desktop, or tablet, the same controller-first approach can be useful if you play from the couch or prefer navigating with a controller. You keep the screen and hardware you already own, but a desktop may require a separate controller and display setup. Microsoft’s descriptions cover both portable and conventional PCs; they do not make a handheld a prerequisite.

What performance claims do—and do not—show
Microsoft describes the handheld implementation as minimizing background activity and deferring non-essential tasks. The official material cited here does not provide an independent benchmark isolating the interface’s effect on frame rates or battery life, so treat it as a workflow and interface upgrade rather than a guaranteed performance boost.

Microsoft’s December 9, 2025 Windows Experience Blog reported that Advanced Shader Delivery reduced first-run load time by over 80% in Avowed and over 95% in Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. Those are Microsoft-reported figures for Advanced Shader Delivery in those games; they are not measurements of the Full Screen Experience itself.

Only if portability and built-in controls are what you want. The ROG Xbox Ally family is one example Microsoft has named, but the feature is also intended for other Windows 11 handhelds and conventional PCs. You do not need to buy a specific device to use the interface where it is available. Check current device listings and regional availability before choosing hardware; the rollout announcements do not establish current stock or pricing.
