Premium is different: Xbox says new Xbox-published games join that tier within 12 months of launch, and Call of Duty titles are excluded from that Premium benefit. Essential does not include new-release games on day one. Catalogs, supported platforms, prices and availability change by time, region, plan and platform, so check the current listing for the specific game you want.
Which Game Pass tiers include day-one releases?
Xbox’s current US plan descriptions separate immediate launch access from access that arrives later. If playing a new release on its launch day is your priority, the relevant choices are Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Premium and Essential are not day-one tiers.

Game Pass Ultimate: day-one console access
Xbox lists new games on day one as an Ultimate feature. Its comparison describes that benefit as covering new Xbox-published and third-party games. This is the broadest day-one wording among the plans in the current comparison, but it is still subject to the title’s platform, region and catalog listing.
Ultimate is therefore the plan to examine first when you play on an Xbox console and want access to eligible new releases as they launch. Do not treat the plan description as a guarantee that every future game will be available on every device: Xbox says game availability varies over time, by region, plan and platform.

- USE FOR GAMES & CONTENT — Redeem for thousands of digital XBOX games, from backward compatible classics to the latest new releases, plus DLC and in‑game currency.
- GAME PASS READY — Apply your balance toward XBOX Game Pass Ultimate to play new titles on day one* and access a library of hundreds of high‑quality console games.
- PRE‑ORDER & PRE‑INSTALL GAMES — Use your balance to pre‑order and pre‑download upcoming titles so you’re ready to play the moment they launch.
- NO FEES OR EXPIRATION — XBOX Gift Cards never expire and have no service fees, so your balance is ready whenever you are.
PC Game Pass: day-one PC access
PC Game Pass also includes day-one titles. Xbox presents it as the PC-only option on its current US page. That makes it the direct day-one comparison for someone whose gaming is on a Windows PC, not a substitute console subscription.
A PC Game Pass day-one entitlement still depends on the game being offered for PC in your region and on the service at that time. Before subscribing for one particular launch, confirm the PC listing rather than relying only on the plan’s general day-one statement.
Premium: delayed access to new Xbox-published games
Premium is not a day-one plan. Xbox says new Xbox-published games join Premium within 12 months of launch. The timing is a maximum window in the plan promise, not a statement that every title arrives on the same date or that all new releases are covered.
There is an important exception: Xbox’s day-one FAQ says the Premium benefit for new Xbox-published games excludes Call of Duty titles. Premium can therefore suit someone willing to wait for many Xbox-published releases, but it should not be chosen on the assumption that Call of Duty will arrive through that delayed-access promise.

Essential: no new releases on day one
Essential does not include new-release games on day one. Xbox positions it around a smaller listed library and online console multiplayer rather than launch-day access. If your deciding question is “Can I play the new game on release day through my subscription?”, Essential is the wrong tier.
“Day one games are only included with XBOX Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass.”
— Xbox, official day-one FAQ
The same FAQ says: “Day one games are not included with XBOX Game Pass Premium and Essential; however, with a Premium subscription you can play new XBOX published games within 1 year of launch (excluding Call of Duty titles).” Xbox uses that wording for the plan distinction; it is not a statement that every first-party game appears on every platform.
What “first-party” means here—and why it is not the same as “day one”
In Xbox’s plan language, the relevant category is new Xbox-published games. That is narrower than every game published by any company that has a relationship with Xbox, and it is different from the separate “day one” feature.

- Day-one access describes when an eligible game enters the subscription: at launch.
- Delayed Xbox-published access describes Premium’s promise: eligible new Xbox-published games join within 12 months.
- Third-party day-one access is included in the wording Xbox uses for Ultimate’s day-one comparison, but it is not part of Premium’s 12-month promise.
That distinction explains why Premium can eventually include some Xbox-published releases without being a day-one tier. It also explains why a title-by-title check matters: a game may be Xbox-published, released on a different platform, excluded by the Call of Duty exception, or absent from your regional catalog.
Plan comparison: launch timing, library size and US prices
The following figures are the numbers displayed on Xbox’s US pages observed on October 13, 2026. Library counts are product-page figures, not fixed guarantees; prices are monthly figures shown at that time. Essential and Premium were displayed with introductory offers, so their listed amounts may not represent the recurring price after the offer or the price in another region.
| Plan | Day-one releases | New Xbox-published games after launch | Platform information | Listed library size | US monthly price shown |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | No | No day-one or stated delayed-release promise | Xbox says availability varies by platform; verify the current plan and title listing | 50+ games | $9.99 introductory offer shown |
| Premium | No | Within 12 months of launch; Call of Duty titles excluded from this benefit | Xbox says availability varies by platform; verify the current plan and title listing | 200+ games | $14.99 introductory offer shown |
| Ultimate | Yes; Xbox describes the comparison as including new Xbox-published and third-party games | Day-one access is the relevant promise rather than a 12-month wait | Check the current Xbox listing for your device and the individual game | 500+ games | $22.99 |
| PC Game Pass | Yes | Day-one access on the PC service where the title is offered | PC-only on Xbox’s current US page | 300+ games | $13.99 |
Xbox can change plan names, prices, introductory offers, library counts and included features. The counts above should be read as “50+,” “200+,” “500+” and “300+” at the time of capture, not as a permanent catalog floor. A game can also leave a catalog or be unavailable in a particular country or on a particular platform.
Which plan fits each type of player?
You play on an Xbox console and want launch-day games
Start with Ultimate. Xbox identifies Ultimate as a day-one tier, including wording that covers new Xbox-published and third-party games. Confirm that the specific release is listed for your console and region before you pay, especially if the game is the main reason for subscribing.

You play on PC and want launch-day games
Compare PC Game Pass first. Xbox labels it PC-only and lists day-one games as a feature. It is not a console plan, so choosing it for a console launch will not provide the access you expect.
You mainly want a large catalog and can wait
Premium may be worth considering if waiting as long as 12 months for eligible new Xbox-published games is acceptable. Its listed US library was 200+ games on October 13, 2026, but the Call of Duty exclusion applies to the delayed-access promise. Check the current catalog for the older or current games you actually play rather than using the count as a guarantee of particular titles.
You want the lowest listed tier and do not need new releases
Essential is aimed at a smaller library and online console multiplayer, not day-one launches. Its US page showed 50+ games and a $9.99 introductory monthly offer on the date above. Choose it only if its current catalog and multiplayer features meet your needs without launch-day access.

You switch between console and PC
Do not infer cross-platform rights from the plan name alone. Xbox states that availability varies by platform, and PC Game Pass is specifically PC-only on the current US page. Check both the plan’s supported devices and the individual game’s platform listing before assuming one subscription covers every device you use.

How to verify one game before subscribing
Plan-level promises answer the general question, but the game page answers the purchase decision. Use this checklist for a specific release:
- Identify the platform. Decide whether you need Xbox console access or PC access. A PC-only plan cannot be treated as a console entitlement.
- Check the current Xbox plan page. Review the day-one wording and the plan’s current catalog rather than relying on an old screenshot, launch article or remembered price.
- Search for the title in the live catalog. Confirm that the game is listed for your country and device. Xbox says availability can vary by region, plan, platform and time.
- Separate publisher and timing. If the game is an Xbox-published release, Premium’s stated window is within 12 months, not launch day. If it is a Call of Duty title, do not count on that Premium benefit.
- Check the date and offer terms. Introductory pricing can differ from the recurring charge, and a displayed library count can change after you subscribe.
- Recheck close to launch. Catalog status and platform availability can change, so verify again if the release date is still weeks or months away.
Common mistakes when comparing the tiers
Assuming Premium is “Ultimate, but cheaper”
Premium has a different timing promise. The documented benefit is access to new Xbox-published games within 12 months, with Call of Duty excluded; it does not include day-one releases. The lower price, where offered, reflects a different service proposition rather than the same launch access.
Calling every Xbox-related game first-party
Use Xbox’s narrower wording: new Xbox-published games. A game’s association with the Xbox ecosystem does not by itself establish that it qualifies for Premium’s delayed-access benefit or that it is available on your platform.

The 50+, 200+, 500+ and 300+ figures were current page counts observed in the US on October 13, 2026. They are not independent measurements and do not promise that a particular game will remain included.
Using a US price outside the United States
The listed $9.99, $14.99, $22.99 and $13.99 amounts are US monthly figures. Essential and Premium were shown with introductory offers. Local taxes, currency, recurring rates and available plans can differ elsewhere; check your regional Xbox store.
Buying a gift card and expecting Game Pass access
An Xbox gift card is account credit, not a Game Pass plan. It can help pay for a subscription or a game, but redeeming credit does not itself add a Game Pass membership or day-one entitlement.
Bottom line for day-one and first-party access
Choose Ultimate for day-one access on the Xbox plan Xbox describes most broadly, or PC Game Pass for day-one PC access. Choose Premium only if you are comfortable waiting up to 12 months for eligible new Xbox-published games and understand that Call of Duty titles are excluded from that benefit. Essential does not include new releases on day one. For any purchase, verify the current local catalog, platform listing, timing and price for the specific game.
