Short answer: PC Game Pass is a Windows-only subscription with 300+ PC games, day-one releases, EA Play, in-game benefits and rewards. On Xbox consoles, Essential, Premium and Ultimate are the relevant tiers. Essential is the entry option, Premium adds a larger library and selected Xbox-published games within one year, and Ultimate combines console and PC access with day-one games, EA Play, cloud gaming and other memberships. Xbox changes catalogs, features, limits and availability by region, platform and date, so use the live plan page for your market before paying: Xbox Game Pass overview.
Xbox Game Pass plans at a glance
The figures below are the claims displayed on Xbox’s U.S. overview page retrieved in October 2026. They are not independent counts, and they do not guarantee that a particular game is available in every country, on every platform or for every subscriber. Xbox says the catalog and features change by time, region, plan and platform.

What “console versus PC” means in practice
Xbox console access
If you play primarily on an Xbox console, compare Essential, Premium and Ultimate. The practical differences are the size and timing of the library, whether cloud play is useful to you, and which benefits are bundled. All three console tiers shown on the U.S. page include online console multiplayer. That does not mean every game is included, nor does it make the tiers interchangeable with PC Game Pass.

Windows PC access
PC Game Pass is a separate PC-only plan. Xbox describes it as a Windows PC library with day-one games, EA Play, in-game benefits and rewards. The PC page says you can play on a Windows PC and lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 version 22H2 or higher for the Xbox PC app. Individual games can require a newer update, different hardware or additional storage, so the game’s own page remains the authority: PC Game Pass requirements and FAQ.
Playing on both devices
Ultimate is the broadest option when one subscription must cover an Xbox console and a Windows PC. It includes day-one games, the largest displayed library, EA Play, Fortnite Crew, Ubisoft+ Classics and cloud play. “Both platforms” still does not mean every listed title runs on both. Xbox explicitly ties individual game availability to platform and plan.
Cloud gaming is separate from PC Game Pass
Cloud play is a plan feature with a monthly allowance, not a synonym for PC access. The U.S. page shows 5 hours for Essential, 10 for Premium and 15 for Ultimate at retrieval. Xbox says cloud gaming requires a supported device and is available only in supported markets. PC Game Pass does not include cloud gaming according to the cited overview.

Essential: the entry console tier
Essential is aimed at a console player who wants a subscription library, online console multiplayer, in-game benefits and rewards without paying for day-one releases. Xbox displayed “50+ games” for this U.S. tier in October 2026 and showed 5 hours of cloud playtime per month. The plan does not include new releases on day one.
- Choose it when the games currently in its catalog are enough and day-one access is unimportant.
- Check the live library before subscribing; a displayed total does not identify which specific games are available in your country or on your console.
- Do not buy it expecting the PC Game Pass catalog or Ultimate’s bundled memberships.
Premium: a larger console library with delayed Xbox-published releases
Premium displayed “200+ games,” online console multiplayer, in-game benefits, rewards and 10 hours of cloud playtime per month on the U.S. page. Its release promise is narrower than Ultimate’s: selected Xbox-published games arrive within one year of launch. The page’s footnote excludes Call of Duty titles from that timing promise, so Premium should not be described as a one-year guarantee for every Xbox-published release.

- Bundled with HDMI_Cable
- Premium fits a console player who wants more catalog depth than Essential and can wait for eligible first-party games.
- “Within one year” is a maximum timing statement for selected games, not a promise that every game arrives exactly twelve months after release.
- Review each game’s listing for platform, region and plan eligibility before relying on the timing claim.
Ultimate: the cross-device bundle
Ultimate is the broadest U.S. bundle in the retrieved overview: 500+ games, day-one games, EA Play, Fortnite Crew, Ubisoft+ Classics, online console multiplayer, rewards and 15 hours of cloud playtime per month. Xbox lists it across the console and PC device categories, making it the straightforward choice for someone who regularly moves between an Xbox and a Windows PC.
The breadth comes with an important qualification: the 500+ figure is a vendor-published snapshot, not a permanent catalog size. A game can be console-only, PC-only or unavailable in your region even while the plan supports both device classes.

PC Game Pass: what the PC-only plan actually includes
PC Game Pass provides a Windows PC library rather than console access. Xbox’s PC page lists 300+ PC games, day-one games, EA Play, in-game benefits and rewards. It does not include cloud gaming, and it does not turn into an Xbox console subscription when you sign in with the same Microsoft account.
Install the Xbox PC app on a supported Windows installation, sign in with the Microsoft account that holds the subscription, and use the app’s Game Pass area to browse PC titles. A subscription grants access while it is active and while each title remains in the library; it is not a permanent purchase of the games.
Library size, ownership and game availability
Game Pass is access to a changing catalog. Xbox’s FAQ states that subscribers can use games “until either the subscription is canceled/expires, or a game leaves the Game Pass library.” If either event occurs, the subscription no longer grants play rights to that title unless you buy it separately or regain access through another entitlement.

- FOUR GENERATIONS OF DIGITAL GAMES — Play thousands of digital games from XBOX Series X|S, XBOX One, XBOX 360, and Original XBOX with backward compatibility. Many titles are enhanced for better visuals and performance. Smart Delivery ensures you always get the best version for your console.
The displayed totals—50+, 200+, 500+ and 300+—are broad plan-level counts from the U.S. page. They should not be read as a promise that every title is available simultaneously in every market, that a console title has a PC version, or that a PC title runs on an Xbox. Check the live Game Pass catalog and the individual game page for platform and region details.
Day-one releases: the key timing difference
| Reader priority | Most relevant plan information | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Every included release on day one | Ultimate and PC Game Pass display day-one games | Whether the title is offered on your platform and in your market |
| Selected Xbox-published games within one year | Premium uses this timing for selected titles; Call of Duty is excluded by the page footnote | The individual title’s listing and any later policy change |
| No day-one requirement | Essential does not include new releases on day one | Whether its current catalog meets your needs |
Day-one language describes when eligible games enter the service, not how long they remain. A title can still leave later under the normal catalog rules.
Online console multiplayer and free-to-play games
Essential, Premium and Ultimate include online console multiplayer on the U.S. overview. Xbox’s comparison information also says multiplayer for free-to-play games is open to every Xbox player, so you do not need a paid Game Pass tier solely to play an eligible free-to-play game online. Paid games and their online requirements can differ; check the game and account requirements before assuming a plan is necessary.
Cloud gaming limits and practical use
Cloud gaming lets you stream supported games instead of installing them, but the allowance shown by Xbox is plan-specific: 5 hours per month for Essential, 10 for Premium and 15 for Ultimate on the captured U.S. page. These limits and the list of supported games or devices can change. Cloud play is also market-dependent, so a plan that advertises the feature in one country may not expose it in another.
- Confirm that cloud gaming is supported in your country.
- Use a supported device and a connection suitable for game streaming.
- Check whether the particular game is cloud-enabled; the plan’s headline total is not a guarantee for every title.
- Track the monthly allowance if cloud play is a deciding factor, because the displayed hours are not unlimited.
How to start playing
On an Xbox console
- Open the local Xbox Game Pass plan page and confirm the plan, price, catalog and features for your country.
- Choose Essential, Premium or Ultimate according to your need for day-one games, catalog size, cloud play and bundled benefits.
- Subscribe or redeem an eligible code on the Microsoft account you intend to use on the console.
- Open the Game Pass area on the console, select a title that is available for your plan and platform, and install it or choose cloud play when that option is offered.
- For online multiplayer, verify the game’s own requirements. Free-to-play multiplayer is available to Xbox players without a paid Game Pass tier according to Xbox’s comparison information.
On a Windows PC
- Confirm that the computer runs Windows 10 or Windows 11 version 22H2 or higher, as listed for the Xbox PC app.
- Subscribe to PC Game Pass or Ultimate with the Microsoft account you will use in the Xbox PC app.
- Install or update the Xbox PC app, sign in, and browse the PC Game Pass catalog.
- Open the page for each game and check its minimum hardware, storage and operating-system requirements; the plan requirement alone does not guarantee that the computer can run it.
- Install the game through the app and keep Windows and the app current if the title requires a newer update.
Using cloud play
- Confirm that your plan, country, device and selected game support cloud gaming.
- Sign in with the subscribing Microsoft account.
- Choose a cloud-enabled title and start streaming rather than installing it.
- Monitor the plan’s monthly cloud allowance, because the U.S. page displays separate limits for Essential, Premium and Ultimate.
Recurring billing, promotions and refunds
Xbox enables recurring billing by default. You can turn it off through your Microsoft account or from the console. Turning off recurring billing stops the next renewal; it does not erase time that has already been paid for.

The U.S. overview says a subscriber may request a refund for the most recent recurring-billing charge within 30 days after payment, limited to one time per Microsoft account per subscription product. Treat that as a condition of the cited page, not a universal refund guarantee: eligibility, local law and current Xbox support terms control the outcome. Introductory promotions can also be limited, and recurring billing continues after a promotion unless you cancel it.
The captured U.S. page did not expose dollar amounts; it displayed dynamic “$XX.XX/month” fields. Because prices vary by market and can change, check the live local plan page immediately before purchase rather than relying on an old price quotation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What happens when you cancel
- Your subscription remains usable through the paid period unless Xbox’s current terms say otherwise.
- When the subscription expires, access to Game Pass titles ends.
- If a game leaves the catalog before your subscription ends, Game Pass access to that title ends at its removal date.
- Save files and achievements are associated with your account, but they do not give you a permanent license to a removed or expired Game Pass title.
- Buying a game separately is a different entitlement from subscribing; check the store listing if you want continued access after cancellation.
Choosing between console plans and PC Game Pass
Choose PC Game Pass when
- You play only on a Windows PC.
- Day-one PC games matter.
- You want EA Play, in-game benefits and rewards without console access.
- You do not need cloud gaming, which the PC plan does not include.
Choose Essential when
- You mainly play on Xbox console.
- You need online console multiplayer and a smaller included library.
- You do not require day-one releases and can work within the displayed 5-hour monthly cloud allowance.
Choose Premium when
- You want a larger console catalog than Essential.
- You can wait for selected Xbox-published games to arrive within one year.
- The displayed 10-hour monthly cloud allowance is sufficient.
Choose Ultimate when
- You need both Xbox console and Windows PC access under one plan.
- Day-one games, EA Play, Fortnite Crew or Ubisoft+ Classics materially matter to you.
- You want the broadest displayed library and the highest listed cloud allowance, 15 hours per month.
Before deciding, compare the current local price with the games you actually intend to play. A larger headline catalog is not automatically better if your preferred titles are on another platform, excluded in your region or scheduled to leave.
Common problems and fixes
“I subscribed on PC but cannot play on Xbox.”
PC Game Pass is PC-only. Use a console-access plan, or Ultimate if you also need Windows PC access. Confirm that the subscription and console use the same Microsoft account.

Check the title’s platform, your plan, region and Windows requirements. A catalog entry can be console-only, PC-only or unavailable in a particular market. On PC, verify Windows 10/11 version 22H2 or higher and the game’s separate hardware requirements.
Best Value
“Cloud play is missing.”
PC Game Pass does not include cloud gaming. For a console tier, verify that cloud play is supported in your market, that the device and title are supported, and that you have remaining monthly cloud hours.
“A new Xbox game is not available on day one.”
Essential has no day-one release inclusion. Premium’s promise covers selected Xbox-published games within one year and excludes Call of Duty titles in the page footnote. Day-one access is listed for Ultimate and PC Game Pass, subject to platform, region and title availability.
“My renewal charged after a trial or promotion.”
Recurring billing is enabled by default. Turn it off through your Microsoft account or console before the next renewal, and review the current Xbox support terms if you need to request a refund.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →How to verify the right plan before paying
- Open the Xbox plan page for your country, not a cached U.S. or Canadian page.
- Check the plan’s current monthly price and whether a promotion converts to recurring billing.
- Search the live catalog for the exact games you care about.
- Open each game’s page to verify console or PC support, cloud availability and system requirements.
- Confirm that multiplayer, EA Play or other bundled benefits are relevant to your account and region.
- Read the current cancellation and refund terms before completing checkout.
This checklist matters because Xbox’s own pages warn that titles, quantities, features and availability vary by time, region, plan and platform. The most reliable answer for a specific game is its current listing under your local account.
