Choose by where you already play: PC-only players should compare PC Game Pass; Xbox console players should compare console-inclusive plans; and players who use both should weigh Ultimate’s broader access and bundled benefits. The best fit also depends on whether you need online console multiplayer, day-one releases, or cloud gaming. Check Xbox’s current local plan comparison and catalog before subscribing.

If you play on a Windows PC
PC Game Pass is the focused option if you mainly want to download and play the PC catalog. Xbox advertises 300+ PC games, day-one releases, EA Play, and in-game benefits for this plan. If you also play on Xbox console or want the broader set of streaming and bundle benefits, compare Ultimate rather than assuming the PC plan covers console access.
#1 Best Overall
- MODERNIZED DESIGN — Experience the modernized design of the XBOX Wireless Controller with sculpted surfaces and updated geometry that enhances comfort and control during long gaming sessions.
- PRECISION PERFORMANCE — Stay on target with a hybrid D-pad and textured grips on triggers, bumpers, and back case for improved accuracy and handling.
- SHARE BUTTON: Seamlessly capture and share content such as screenshots, recordings, and more with the new Share button.
- VERSATILE CONNECTIVITY — Connect via USB-C for plug-and-play on console and PC, or quickly pair and switch between supported devices with XBOX Wireless and Bluetooth support.
- BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.
If you play on an Xbox console
Compare the console-inclusive tiers. Essential may fit if your priority is a smaller included library and online multiplayer for paid games. Premium is a larger middle tier, but it does not provide day-one access: Xbox says new Xbox-published games arrive within one year of launch. Ultimate is the tier to compare if day-one releases, cloud gaming, or its additional bundles matter to you.
If you use both PC and console
Ultimate is Xbox’s broadest bundle: its current description combines day-one releases, a 500+ game catalog across console, PC, and supported devices, cloud gaming, EA Play, Fortnite Crew, and Ubisoft+ Classics. Consider whether those extra services and cross-device access are worth the higher price for your actual play habits; not every title is available on every platform.

When do you need a plan for console multiplayer?
Essential, Premium, and Ultimate include online console multiplayer according to Xbox’s plan descriptions. A paid plan is not required solely to play free-to-play games online: Xbox says that multiplayer is open to every Xbox player. If online play is your only reason to subscribe, check the specific game and current plan terms before paying.
