Yes, Microsoft really did let Xbox Insiders test Game Pass Standard for $1. The offer began on August 20, 2024, and included a recurring promotional subscription—not a free trial for every Xbox owner. Standard offered hundreds of console games, online console multiplayer, and member discounts, but it did not include immediate access to every new Game Pass release.
The original $1 Insider flight is historical. A similar promotion may appear on Microsoft’s current storefront, but eligibility, plan names, pricing, and benefits now depend on your account, region, and the offer shown at checkout.

What the $1 Xbox Game Pass Standard test included
Microsoft announced the Game Pass Standard preview for Xbox Insiders on August 20, 2024. During the test, eligible Insiders could subscribe for $1 per month, with contemporary reports indicating that renewals could remain at that price while the flight continued. Microsoft did not announce a fixed end date for the test.
The eventual announced U.S. price for the tier was $14.99 per month. Microsoft later described Standard as a console-focused plan providing:
#1 Best Overall
- MODERNIZED DESIGN — Experience the modernized design of the XBOX Wireless Controller with sculpted surfaces and updated geometry that enhances comfort and control during long gaming sessions.
- PRECISION PERFORMANCE — Stay on target with a hybrid D-pad and textured grips on triggers, bumpers, and back case for improved accuracy and handling.
- SHARE BUTTON: Seamlessly capture and share content such as screenshots, recordings, and more with the new Share button.
- VERSATILE CONNECTIVITY — Connect via USB-C for plug-and-play on console and PC, or quickly pair and switch between supported devices with XBOX Wireless and Bluetooth support.
- BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.
- Access to a catalog of hundreds of console games
- Online console multiplayer
- Member discounts, reportedly up to 50% on selected games
The catalog was never a permanent list of owned games. Titles can be added or removed, and availability varies by region, platform, and plan. Game Pass access also does not normally give you permanent ownership of included games or all of their downloadable content.
Microsoft’s original explanation is available in its Xbox Insider announcement and its Standard launch explanation.
The most important limitation: no guaranteed day-one releases
Game Pass Standard was positioned below Ultimate primarily because it did not provide immediate access to some new Game Pass releases. Microsoft said that games included in Ultimate at launch could arrive in Standard later—potentially 12 months or more after release, depending on the title.

That makes day-one access the key decision point:
- Choose Standard or its current middle-tier successor if you want a large console catalog and multiplayer but can wait for new releases.
- Choose Ultimate if playing major Xbox releases on launch day is important.
Standard was also not a replacement for PC Game Pass. It was principally a console plan and did not automatically include the full PC catalog, EA Play benefits, or Ultimate’s broader PC and cloud features.
How Xbox Insiders accessed the preview
The 2024 test was aimed at members of the Xbox Insider program rather than all Xbox users. The practical route was:
- Install or open Xbox Insider Hub on an eligible Xbox console.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account enrolled in the Insider program.
- Look for the Game Pass Standard preview or flight.
- Open the subscription offer if it appears.
- Check the price, promotional duration, renewal rate, taxes, and cancellation terms before accepting.
The Xbox interface may have changed since the preview. Do not treat the old Insider Hub path as a guaranteed current menu location, and do not assume that being an Insider automatically makes an account eligible.

Can you still get Game Pass Standard for $1?
Not necessarily. The original $1 Standard test was a limited 2024 Insider preview, not a permanent public offer. Microsoft’s current Xbox storefront and Game Pass pages can display $1 promotions for selected plans, sometimes for a limited period such as 14 days. However, current pages also use changing or inconsistent plan names, including Premium in some contexts.
Check Microsoft’s current Game Pass comparison page and the offer shown after signing in. The final checkout screen—not an old headline, cached search result, or third-party deal page—controls your eligibility and price.
Before selecting Join, verify:
- The exact plan name
- How long the promotional price lasts
- The regular renewal price
- Whether billing is monthly or follows another interval
- Taxes and currency
- Whether the offer is limited to new, returning, or otherwise eligible subscribers
- Whether cancellation prevents the next charge or ends access immediately
Microsoft’s storefront terms state that subscriptions renew automatically unless canceled through the Microsoft account. A $1 promotion therefore should not be treated as a one-time purchase or a free trial. Set a reminder, then check the subscription’s renewal and end dates in your Microsoft account.

How Standard compares with other Game Pass options
| Plan type | Best for | Main strengths | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core or Essential-style entry tier | Players mainly seeking online multiplayer | Lower-cost multiplayer access and a smaller rotating catalog | Far fewer games than the middle tier |
| Standard or current Premium-style middle tier | Console players wanting a broad catalog | Hundreds of console games, multiplayer, and member discounts | No guaranteed immediate access to day-one releases |
| Ultimate | Players wanting the broadest Xbox package | Console and PC games, online multiplayer, cloud gaming, perks, and major day-one releases | Higher recurring cost |
| PC Game Pass | PC players | PC catalog, EA Play, and day-one PC releases | Not a substitute for console Game Pass benefits |
Microsoft’s current benefits and plan names can change, so use the official comparison page for the live lineup. Microsoft’s April 2026 update describes Ultimate as including console and PC games, current Call of Duty titles, online console multiplayer, cloud gaming, in-game benefits, and major day-one releases.

Free-to-play games do not require a paid multiplayer subscription
If you only play free-to-play games online, Standard may be unnecessary. Xbox provides online multiplayer for free-to-play games without a paid Game Pass subscription.
Your account may not qualify
An active Game Pass subscription, previous promotional use, region, or account status can affect eligibility. If the offer does not appear, confirm that the correct Microsoft account is signed in, check Xbox Insider Hub, and inspect the current official comparison page.

Prices are regional
The reported $1 price and $14.99 regular price refer to the U.S. 2024 plan. Do not assume the same currency, price, tax treatment, or promotional duration applies in Canada, the United Kingdom, Europe, or elsewhere.
Different accounts can complicate access
The account that buys the subscription may not be the same account used to play, especially when console sharing is involved. Confirm which account receives the entitlement before paying.
A Premium label is not automatically a scam
If the offer now says Premium rather than Standard, compare the plan’s platforms, catalog, day-one access, cloud features, price, and renewal terms. Microsoft’s Game Pass structure has changed since the 2024 preview, so the name alone is not enough to establish whether the benefits are identical.

It is attractive if you want to sample a large console catalog cheaply, need multiplayer temporarily, and are happy to play games that are already in the service. It is a poor fit if your main goal is a new first-party release on launch day, PC access, cloud gaming, or the complete Ultimate bundle.
If Microsoft’s checkout page clearly shows the promotional price and you understand the renewal terms, the offer can be a low-cost way to test the middle tier. If the advertised $1 price is missing, do not subscribe on the assumption that it will be honored later. If you mainly need online multiplayer, compare the entry tier first; if you want day-one games, compare Ultimate instead.
Bottom line: the $1 Game Pass Standard offer was genuine, but it was a limited Xbox Insider preview launched in August 2024. In 2026, only the live Microsoft checkout page can tell you whether a comparable promotion is available for your account and region.
