SteamOS makes the Lenovo Legion Go S feel far more like a proper console than its Windows counterpart—but it does not make every configuration equally worthwhile. The Z1 Extreme model is the performance pick, the Z2 Go model only makes sense at a substantial discount, and Windows remains the safer choice for Game Pass, third-party launchers, and compatibility-sensitive multiplayer games.
The verdict
The Legion Go S is a better handheld with SteamOS. Its controller-first interface, faster access to your library, cleaner suspend-and-resume experience, and lower desktop overhead address many of the frustrations that make Windows awkward on a small touchscreen.

That improvement is real, but it is not magic. SteamOS does not turn the Z2 Go into a high-performance gaming PC, and it cannot guarantee compatibility with every Windows game. The best version is the Ryzen Z1 Extreme model with 32GB of memory and a 1TB SSD. The Ryzen Z2 Go model with 16GB and 512GB is a reasonable SteamOS machine for indie games, older titles, and reduced-settings play, but only when its price is meaningfully lower.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBattery life remains the major weakness: independent gaming tests generally land at roughly two to two-and-a-half hours. At around 730–740g, the Go S is lighter than the original Legion Go, but it is not a lightweight handheld.

What part two is actually reviewing
This is not simply another hardware tour. The important question is whether the Legion Go S was waiting for SteamOS all along.
The Windows version offers broad PC compatibility, but Windows was designed around a keyboard, mouse, and desktop window management—not an 8-inch controller-driven screen. SteamOS changes the experience at the level that matters most during handheld play: you can turn it on, navigate with a controller, launch a game, suspend it, and return to it without constantly negotiating with a desktop operating system.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Part two therefore asks five practical questions:
- Does SteamOS make the Go S more pleasant to use?
- Does its gaming-focused software stack produce useful performance gains?
- Does the premium Z1 Extreme configuration justify its price?
- Are non-Steam games and launchers too awkward?
- Did Lenovo improve the original Go’s ergonomics without giving up too much functionality?
First, separate the configurations
The name is confusing because the processor, memory, storage, and operating system can all vary by SKU and region.
| Configuration | Processor | Memory | Storage | Operating system |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Entry model | Ryzen Z2 Go | 16GB LPDDR5X | 512GB SSD | Windows 11 or SteamOS, depending on SKU |
| Premium SteamOS model | Ryzen Z1 Extreme | 32GB LPDDR5X | 1TB SSD | SteamOS |
| Premium Windows model | Ryzen Z1 Extreme | 32GB LPDDR5X | 1TB SSD | Windows 11 |
Published coverage has cited approximately $599 for a Z2 Go/16GB/512GB SteamOS model and about $829–$829.99 for a Z1 Extreme/32GB/1TB model. Those are prices reported in earlier coverage, not verified August 2026 prices. Regional availability, retailer promotions, and Lenovo’s model numbers matter.
Memory is soldered, so 16GB cannot later be upgraded to 32GB. Check the full SKU before you pay for what appears to be the same handheld.
SteamOS is the chosen one—mostly
SteamOS is the Go S’s defining advantage. Its interface is built around a controller and a game library rather than a desktop. Steam launches directly, supported games can suspend and resume more naturally, and there are fewer background Windows processes competing for resources.
That matters especially on a device with an 8-inch display. Windows desktop controls, tiny buttons, pop-up windows, and launcher updates are manageable, but they are rarely elegant when the device is in your hands. The Go S’s small touchpad helps with desktop navigation, though it is no substitute for a mouse.

Tom’s Hardware also found SteamOS ahead of Windows on identical Z2 Go hardware by roughly 4–15 frames per second depending on the game and resolution. That result is useful evidence, not a universal law: the comparison involved particular games, power profiles, resolutions, and test conditions. SteamOS reduces software overhead; it does not change the processor or graphics hardware.
SteamOS still has important limits. Adding non-Steam games is possible, but it is not always straightforward. You may need to add a launcher manually, select a Proton compatibility layer, create controller mappings, or work around an authentication problem. Some games simply will not work.
Windows is the better choice when your library depends on:
- Xbox PC Game Pass;
- Epic Games Store, Battle.net, Ubisoft Connect, or EA App;
- games with unusual launchers or middleware;
- multiplayer titles whose anti-cheat systems do not support SteamOS;
- conventional Windows applications and desktop tools.
SteamOS is best understood as a smoother Steam platform, not a universal replacement for Windows.
Z2 Go versus Z1 Extreme
The Z1 Extreme is substantially faster. In Tom’s Hardware testing, it led the Z2 Go by 8 frames per second at 800p and 4fps at 1200p in Shadow of the Tomb Raider. The lead reached 11fps at 800p and 5fps at 1200p in Cyberpunk 2077, around 14fps in some 800p tests of Far Cry 6 and Red Dead Redemption 2, and as much as 18fps in an 800p Borderlands 3 test.
The practical lesson is more important than any single number:
- Z1 Extreme: the model to choose for demanding AAA games, higher frame rates, and longer useful life.
- Z2 Go: suitable for indies, older PC games, lighter 3D titles, and demanding games at lower resolution or settings.
- SteamOS: can improve results on either chip, but it cannot erase the Z2 Go’s hardware limitations.
Use 800p when performance and battery life matter. Use 1200p for lighter games, strategy titles, older games, and desktop work. Native 1920×1200 is expensive for modern AAA games on an integrated handheld GPU, so a sharp display does not mean every game should run at native resolution.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Frame-rate consistency matters more than a high average. A game that fluctuates heavily can feel worse than a title locked to a lower, stable target. The 120Hz variable-refresh display helps smooth changing frame rates, but it cannot create performance that the hardware does not have.

Display: large, bright, and useful
The Go S has an 8-inch IPS touchscreen with a 1920×1200 resolution, 16:10 aspect ratio, 120Hz variable refresh rate, and rated brightness of 500 nits. Lenovo lists full sRGB coverage for the relevant Z1 Extreme SteamOS configuration.
Some secondary coverage has called this resolution “WQXGA,” but 1920×1200 is conventionally WUXGA; WQXGA generally refers to 2560×1600. The pixel dimensions are the useful specification.
The screen’s size is a genuine advantage over smaller handhelds. Text is easier to read, strategy games have more room, and the 16:10 shape gives PC games and desktop applications useful vertical space. It is not OLED, so it cannot match an OLED Steam Deck’s contrast and black levels.
For battery-conscious play, 60Hz or a capped frame rate may be preferable to 120Hz. VRR is most helpful when performance varies within the display’s range; it is not a guarantee that a demanding game will run at 120fps.
Controls and comfort
The fixed controls are one of the Go S’s strongest physical improvements. Textured grips, responsive Hall-effect sticks, firm buttons, and comfortable triggers make it easier to hold for extended sessions than the original Go.
But “improved” does not mean “light.” Lenovo lists a starting weight around 730g, while some reviews list approximately 740g. That is lighter than the original Legion Go, yet still a substantial device for commuting or long sessions with one hand.
The redesign also removes distinctive features from the original:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- the controllers no longer detach;
- there is no integrated kickstand;
- tabletop play is less convenient;
- the original controller-as-mouse functionality is gone.
TechRadar found the D-pad potentially too stiff for fighting-game precision. That is a niche concern, but it illustrates the Go S’s trade-off: it is a more conventional and comfortable handheld, not a smaller version of every original Legion Go feature.

Thermals and fan noise
The Go S exhausts hot air through the top vents, keeping the hottest rear section away from the main grip areas. Tom’s Hardware measured the hottest rear area at approximately 91°F under its test conditions and found the device comfortable to hold.
That number should not be treated as universal. Room temperature, firmware, game, power mode, and sustained load all affect results. Fans are audible in demanding games, particularly in Performance mode.
The trade-off is familiar:
- lower TDP means less noise and better battery life but lower frame rates;
- higher TDP produces more performance at the cost of fan noise and endurance;
- docked play makes fan noise less noticeable but does not remove it;
- long sessions are more comfortable because the grips avoid the hottest area, though the device remains warm under load.
Battery life: keep the charger nearby
The Go S has a 55.5Wh battery and ships with a 65W USB-C charger. That is a respectable battery size for a handheld, but modern PC games can consume it quickly.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTom’s Hardware recorded about 2 hours 5 minutes in Red Dead Redemption 2 and about 2 hours 30 minutes in BeamNG under its stated test conditions. TechRadar reported roughly 2 hours 30 minutes in Balanced mode during gameplay. Longer desktop-use results should not be confused with gaming endurance.
Actual runtime depends on the game, brightness, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, resolution, refresh rate, power profile, background processes, operating system, and battery age. A realistic expectation for demanding gaming is therefore approximately two to two-and-a-half hours, not an all-day portable console.
The Go S has two USB4 Type-C ports with DisplayPort 1.4 support and transfer speeds up to 40Gbps, subject to the connected device. That makes a dock, monitor, external storage, or power bank practical additions. Lenovo’s own battery guidance also notes that configuration, software, wireless use, power management, brightness, and aging affect endurance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Storage and upgradeability
The 512GB model can fill quickly after the operating system and a few large games. The 1TB model is more practical, but still not spacious if you maintain a modern AAA library.
A microSD card is useful for indie games, older titles, emulation, and games that are less sensitive to storage speed. It is less attractive as the primary home for every modern AAA game.

Lenovo documentation lists an M.2 PCIe 4.0 x4 SSD slot, with the exact drive format and supported capacity depending on the SKU. Some current specifications describe support for 2242 drives and 2280 drives in particular configurations, so verify the relevant PSREF document rather than assuming every Go S has identical internal storage.
Replacing the SSD is possible, but it is not a casual upgrade. Tom’s Hardware notes that opening the chassis involves multiple screws and removal of surrounding plastic and trigger components. The RAM is soldered and cannot be replaced.
Game compatibility: choose your ecosystem first
Works best on SteamOS
- Steam games with strong Proton support;
- indie games and older PC games;
- single-player games;
- controller-friendly titles;
- games that benefit from suspend and resume.
May require tinkering
- games using third-party launchers;
- titles requiring keyboard-heavy interfaces;
- always-online authentication systems;
- games with unusual middleware;
- multiplayer games with unsupported anti-cheat.
Choose Windows instead when
- Game Pass PC is central to your library;
- you regularly use several PC launchers;
- you need maximum compatibility rather than the cleanest interface;
- the Go S will double as a conventional Windows computer.
A SteamOS-compatible game is not automatically identical to its Windows experience. Proton version, graphics API, shaders, drivers, controller support, and anti-cheat implementation can all affect the result.

How it compares with the alternatives
Steam Deck OLED
The Steam Deck OLED remains the simpler recommendation for buyers who prioritize SteamOS polish, mature software support, battery efficiency, and a lower-cost entry point. The Legion Go S offers a larger 120Hz screen and stronger configurations, particularly in the Z1 Extreme model, but it is not automatically the better value. Current prices must be compared for the specific model.
Original Lenovo Legion Go
The original Go remains appealing if you want detachable controllers, an integrated kickstand, and a larger high-resolution display. The Go S is the better ergonomic design for many handheld players, but it gives up the original’s unusual tabletop and controller features.
ASUS ROG Ally and Ally X
These Windows handhelds remain better suited to buyers who need broad launcher compatibility and conventional PC access. The Go S’s advantages are its larger screen and SteamOS option; the Ally family can be preferable if Windows flexibility or a lighter device matters more.
Newer, more powerful handhelds
Newer Z2 Extreme-class machines may offer more performance, but they can cost substantially more. The Z1 Extreme Go S makes most sense when discounted or when its 32GB memory and SteamOS experience matter more than owning the newest processor.
Which Legion Go S should you buy?
Buy the Z1 Extreme SteamOS model if:
- you mostly use Steam;
- you want the best performance in the Go S family;
- you value 32GB RAM and 1TB storage;
- you play demanding AAA games;
- its price is close to, or below, newer competing handhelds.
Buy the Z2 Go SteamOS model if:
- you mainly play indie, older, or moderately demanding games;
- SteamOS simplicity matters more than maximum frame rate;
- the price gap to the Z1 Extreme is substantial;
- you are comfortable using 800p and reduced settings.
Buy the Windows model if:
- Game Pass or multiple launchers are essential;
- you need conventional Windows software;
- compatibility matters more than a console-like interface;
- you will use the handheld as much as a small PC as a game console.
Skip or postpone it if:
- you expect all-day battery life;
- you dislike carrying a charger or power bank;
- you need detachable controls or a built-in kickstand;
- you mainly play anti-cheat-sensitive multiplayer games;
- the Z1 Extreme model costs as much as a substantially faster handheld;
- you expect demanding games to run at high settings and native 1200p.
Final verdict
The Legion Go S is best understood as a large-screen SteamOS handheld with PC-grade flexibility. SteamOS fixes the most visible usability problem with Windows handhelds and can deliver measurable performance advantages in some controlled comparisons. The hardware is comfortable, bright, fast-refreshing, and well connected.
However, the Z2 Go and Z1 Extreme versions should not be treated as the same product. The Z1 Extreme is the serious gaming option; the Z2 Go is a budget SteamOS handheld whose appeal depends heavily on its discount. Windows is still the better operating system for Game Pass and broad PC compatibility.
SteamOS was the chosen one—but only if your library is ready to choose it too.
