The promotion was real, but it was not a permanent daily giveaway. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members received access to a 10-day EA Play holiday countdown that ran from December 17 through December 26, 2024. The “2016 classic” was Battlefield 1: Revolution. As of September 2026, that event has ended; Xbox Game Pass Ultimate still includes EA Play, but there is no evidence of an ongoing year-round EA gift countdown.
What the headline was referring to
On December 16, 2024, Xbox and EA announced a holiday promotion for eligible Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members. From December 17 through December 26, members could claim one digital EA game or piece of content per day, creating a 10-day countdown. The original announcement is available from Xbox Wire.

The important qualification is timing: this was a fixed holiday event, not a permanent daily benefit. “Check back daily” was useful advice during those ten days, but it should not be treated as current guidance years later.
The “2016 classic” was Battlefield 1: Revolution
The first prominent gift was Battlefield 1: Revolution. The underlying game, Battlefield 1, was released in 2016 by EA and DICE, which explains the headline’s reference to a “2016 classic.”

Revolution is an edition or bundle designation, so it is more precise to name the complete product rather than describe it only as “Battlefield 1.” However, the public announcement called the items “digital gifts” without fully explaining the license terms for every individual reward. That means it would be inaccurate to promise that every item was permanently owned or remained playable after a subscription ended.
What else was included?
The countdown was not made up of ten full standalone games. The announcement named a mixture of games, downloadable content, and in-game currency:
- Battlefield 1: Revolution—the 2016-era game and featured opening gift.
- The Sims 4 Home Chef Hustle Stuff Pack—additional content for The Sims 4, not a separate full game.
- Titanfall 2: Ultimate Edition—a complete game edition.
- 500 PGA Tour Points for EA Sports PGA Tour—in-game currency or content, rather than a standalone game.
These examples show why calling the event “free EA games” is too broad. Eligible members could receive digital promotional benefits at no separate charge during the event, but the rewards varied considerably in type.

Was it actually free?
For an eligible member, the promotion did not require a separate purchase price at the time of redemption. But “free” did not mean available to every Xbox owner.

Eligibility could depend on having an active Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription, using the correct Microsoft account, meeting regional requirements, and claiming the offer before its deadline. The exact redemption and license terms could also differ between a game, an expansion, points, or another promotional item.
Do not assume that downloading a game automatically means you purchased it outright. There are several different kinds of access involved in the Xbox and EA ecosystem:
| Benefit | What it generally means |
|---|---|
| EA Play catalog access | Play eligible games while the subscription is active and the title remains available. |
| EA Play trial | Play a selected new release for a limited amount of time. |
| EA Play reward | Receive promotional items such as in-game content, currency, or bonuses. |
| Holiday gift | Claim a special offer during a defined promotional window. |
| Game Pass Perk | Use a separate Xbox benefit that may include consumables, partner offers, or in-game content. |
| Purchased or redeemed ownership | Hold a separate entitlement whose continued availability is governed by the relevant store terms. |
Xbox describes EA Play in terms of a game collection, selected trials, member rewards, and other benefits—not as a blanket promise that every promotional game becomes permanently yours. Check the individual Microsoft Store offer whenever ownership matters.

Yes. Xbox’s current EA Play materials list EA Play as included with Game Pass Ultimate at no additional charge. EA Play provides access to a collection of EA games, selected trials, member rewards, and other promotional benefits. Catalogs and benefits can change, and availability may vary by platform and territory. See the official Xbox EA Play page for the current regional details.

That inclusion is not the same as saying every Game Pass tier receives the same benefit. Xbox’s plan comparison page should be used to confirm which subscription includes EA Play in your market.
Which subscription is relevant?
If you are considering a subscription now, choose based on the benefits you actually want—not because of the expired December 2024 promotion.
- Xbox Game Pass Ultimate: the broadest fit for Xbox players who want Game Pass benefits bundled with EA Play, subject to current plan terms, pricing, platform support, and recurring billing.
- PC Game Pass: relevant to PC-focused players. Xbox materials describe EA Play as available with PC Game Pass, but do not assume that a future or past promotion applies identically across console and PC.
- Standalone EA Play: the narrower option for readers mainly interested in EA’s catalog, trials, and rewards. It does not provide the complete bundle of Ultimate benefits.
Prices and promotional offers change, so confirm the amount shown on the official Xbox page before subscribing. Do not subscribe solely to obtain a 2024 gift that is no longer being promoted.
How to check for a future EA promotion
Xbox labels and promotional placements change, so there is no single menu path guaranteed to be identical on every console, PC, account, or region. Use this process instead:

- Experience the next generation in entertainment with the Microsoft Xbox One games console
- Powerful hardware provides stunning, true-to-life graphics
- Play with millions of other gamers across the web with Xbox Live
- Jump seamlessly between your favourite game, TV show or movie
- Includes a Wireless Controller
- Sign in to the correct Microsoft account. It must be the account attached to the active qualifying subscription.
- Open an official Xbox surface. Check the Xbox app, the Game Pass area, or the Microsoft Store on the supported device.
- Search for the specific promotion. You can also inspect the EA Play or Game Pass benefits area if one is displayed.
- Read the offer page before claiming. Confirm eligibility, expiration date and time, platform, territory, and whether the item is a full game, DLC, points, trial, or in-game reward.
- Check account-linking requirements. Some PC or EA benefits may require an EA account or the EA app.
- Claim before the deadline. A daily offer can disappear when its redemption window closes.
- Verify the entitlement. Check owned games, the game’s Manage game and add-ons screen, your in-game inventory, or Microsoft order history.
- Keep confirmation details. Save the confirmation email or order-history entry if the reward is important.
Never pay a third-party seller for an item that is supposed to be included with your subscription until you have checked the official offer page and the signed-in account.

If a future EA or Xbox reward is missing, work through these checks:
- Confirm that the Ultimate or other qualifying subscription is still active.
- Make sure you are signed into the Microsoft account that claimed the offer.
- Confirm that the intended Microsoft and EA accounts are linked.
- Check whether the offer was limited to another platform, country, or device.
- Verify that the redemption deadline has not passed.
- Check whether you already owned the game or content.
- Restart the Xbox app or console, then sign in again to allow entitlements to synchronize.
- Review Microsoft purchase or order history and the title’s Manage game and add-ons screen.
If the offer shows as claimed but the content never appears, contact Xbox or EA support with the account information and confirmation record. Do not assume that reinstalling the game will fix an entitlement that was never successfully attached to the account.

What the original headline gets wrong today
The original wording makes a completed promotion sound ongoing. It also groups full games, DLC, and PGA Tour Points together as though they were all identical “free games.” Finally, references to an “EA gifts portal” or permanent “EA Play Hub” should not be treated as universal official destinations without checking the current Xbox interface.

The accurate version is narrower: Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members were offered a 10-day EA Play holiday countdown in December 2024, beginning with Battlefield 1: Revolution. Similar promotions may return, but neither the announcement nor current Xbox product descriptions establishes a permanent daily giveaway.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I still claim the Battlefield 1 EA gift from the 2024 countdown?
Not through the expired December 17–26, 2024 countdown. Check the current Microsoft Store listing and your account history for any separate entitlement or later promotion.
Was Battlefield 1: Revolution included with every Game Pass plan?
The announcement specifically targeted Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members. Do not extend that eligibility automatically to every Game Pass tier, EA Play subscriber, or PC user.

Will I keep an EA game after canceling Game Pass Ultimate?
It depends on the entitlement. Catalog access generally ends when the qualifying subscription ends, while a separately redeemed item may have different terms. Check the individual offer before assuming permanent ownership.
Does EA Play include full new EA releases?
EA Play provides a catalog, selected trials, member rewards, and other benefits. It is not a promise of unlimited permanent ownership of every new EA release.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The “2016 classic” was Battlefield 1: Revolution, offered as part of EA’s 10-day Xbox holiday countdown from December 17–26, 2024. The event is over. Game Pass Ultimate still includes EA Play, but future rewards must be checked individually for eligibility, platform, expiration, and ownership terms.
