Neither option is always cheaper. Game Pass can cost less when you play several included titles during a short subscription period or use benefits you would otherwise purchase. Buying games during sales is often better when you want a small, specific collection and expect to replay those games for years. Compare the same games over the same number of months using current US prices; the lower total wins for your situation.
Start with a like-for-like comparison
The most reliable comparison is not “subscription versus ownership” in the abstract. It is the cost of the games you genuinely expect to play during a defined period. Pick a period such as three, six or 12 months, then write down the exact titles and platforms involved.

Use these two totals:
- Game Pass total: monthly plan price multiplied by the months you expect to remain subscribed.
- Sale-purchase total: the current Microsoft Store sale prices of the same games you plan to play.
Add a value for online console multiplayer or another included feature only when you would otherwise pay for that feature. Treat member discounts as a reduction to a specific eligible purchase, not as a blanket percentage off every game.
If the subscription total is lower than the sale-purchase total for the same titles and period, Game Pass is cheaper in that scenario. If the purchase total is lower, buying wins. Recalculate when a sale ends, a game leaves the catalog or your expected subscription length changes.

Current US Game Pass prices and catalog sizes
Xbox’s US comparison information lists the following monthly prices and service counts as checked on October 13, 2026. Introductory offers may be account-specific, time-limited and region-dependent. Subscriptions renew automatically at the then-current regular price unless you cancel.
| Plan | US monthly price | Advertised catalog size | What the count means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Game Pass Ultimate | $22.99 per month | 500+ games | Service count for the Ultimate catalog; individual titles and availability change. |
| Game Pass Premium | $14.99 per month | 200+ games | Service count for Premium; the games available depend on plan, platform, region and time. |
| PC Game Pass | $13.99 per month | 300+ PC games | Listing count for PC Game Pass, not a promise that a particular PC title is included. |
These are recurring prices, not the cost of a one-time pass. For example, six months at the listed Ultimate rate would be calculated as six multiplied by $22.99; six months at the listed Premium rate would be six multiplied by $14.99. Use the price shown in your account if an introductory promotion or regional offer differs.
What a subscription actually buys
Temporary access to a changing catalog
Game Pass access lasts only while the subscription is active and while a title remains in the relevant library. The official Game Pass FAQ states: “Game Pass subscribers enjoy access to games in the library until either the subscription is canceled/expires, or a game leaves the Game Pass library.” When the subscription expires, or when a game is removed, you need an active entitlement or a separate purchase to keep playing it.

They do not guarantee that your preferred game is included, that it is in the right plan or that it will remain available for your entire comparison period. Check the title’s current product page and the plan shown for your console or PC before subscribing.
Member purchase discounts
Xbox says Ultimate, Premium and Essential subscribers can receive up to 50% off select games through Deals with Game Pass. Xbox also says Ultimate, Game Pass for Console and PC Game Pass members can receive up to 20% off select games in the Game Pass library. “Up to” is important: these are maximum discounts for eligible items, not the rate you should assume for every game.
The deals are based on Microsoft Store prices, cannot be combined with other offers and exclude some titles, including select recent releases. Compare the actual member price displayed for the specific game with its current sale price. Do not add a theoretical 50% or 20% saving to your calculation.

Included extras
Some plans include online console multiplayer and other membership benefits. Count an extra only if you would otherwise buy it or it changes a real decision. Someone who already has another way to play online should assign that feature no additional savings. Someone who needs online multiplayer for a planned console game can include the separate cost they would have paid, using the current terms shown for their account.

What buying games on sale gives you
Continued access to selected purchases
A sale purchase is separate from the subscription catalog. It is the more suitable route when you want a small set of games available for later replay without keeping a Game Pass subscription active. Your comparison should still respect the platform’s licensing and account terms, but the purchase does not depend on a title remaining in the Game Pass library.
A fixed list instead of an open-ended catalog
Buying works best when you already know which games you will play. You pay the listed sale price for those titles rather than paying for months in which you browse but start little. There is no stable, representative Xbox-wide average sale discount to use as a shortcut, so enter the live price of each intended game.
Budget control with a gift card
An Xbox gift card can be used for eligible Microsoft Store purchases and can help you cap spending on the buy-on-sale route. It does not reduce a game’s price. Verify the gift card’s eligibility and regional terms before relying on it for a particular purchase.
How to calculate your own break-even point
- Choose the timeframe. Decide how many months you would realistically keep Game Pass. Include only months in which you expect to play or use a benefit.
- Select the exact plan and platform. Use Ultimate, Premium or PC Game Pass only if its catalog and features match your console or PC. A cheaper plan is not a saving if it omits the game you want.
- Build a genuine game list. Include titles you expect to start, not every game you might sample. Mark whether each title is currently in the plan’s library.
- Record current prices. For the buy route, enter each game’s live sale price. For the subscription route, use the recurring monthly price shown at checkout after any introductory offer.
- Calculate both totals. Multiply the monthly subscription price by the number of months. Add the sale prices for the selected games. If a member price applies to a purchase, use that displayed price and note its eligibility.
- Add only usable extras. Assign a value to online multiplayer or another benefit only when you would otherwise spend money on it during the same period.
- Compare and revisit. The lower total is the cheaper choice for that list and timeframe. Re-run the calculation when a sale, catalog entry, plan price or play schedule changes.
A spreadsheet can use one row per game and columns for catalog inclusion, sale price, member price and whether you expect to finish it. Keep the subscription months in a separate cell so changing the period updates the result immediately.

You will play several included games quickly
Suppose your list contains multiple games already included in the plan and you expect to complete or substantially play them within a few subscription months. The subscription total may be lower than purchasing all of those titles individually, especially when some are new enough that their sale prices remain high. The calculation must use the plan that actually includes them and the months you will remain subscribed.

You use the non-game benefits
If you need online console multiplayer for the same period, or another included feature you would otherwise purchase, that benefit increases the subscription’s practical value. Do not count it merely because it appears in the plan description; count only a cost you would genuinely incur.
You like sampling and variety
A large catalog can be valuable when you regularly try games you would not have bought individually. In that case, the relevant comparison is not a list of hypothetical purchases but the number of games you will actually play during the paid months. Keep the time limit visible: continuing a subscription for browsing after your playing drops off can erase the initial advantage.
Scenarios in which buying on sale tends to save more
You want only one or two games
When your list is short, a strong sale price on those specific games can be lower than even a brief subscription. Check whether the titles are included before subscribing; paying for a catalog you will not use adds no value.
You will replay the same games for a long time
Long-term replay changes the comparison. A subscription may require many recurring months to preserve access, while a sale purchase gives you a selected title without that ongoing catalog fee. Estimate how often you will return after the initial playthrough and include every month you would otherwise keep the subscription active.
You expect to pause subscriptions
If your play schedule is seasonal, buying during a deep sale can avoid paying through inactive months. You can also subscribe for a concentrated period, cancel automatic renewal and purchase only the games you want to retain. Set a reminder before the next renewal date because promotional pricing can end and the regular recurring price can apply.
How member discounts change the decision
A member discount creates a hybrid strategy: subscribe for a short period, play included games, then buy a favorite at its eligible member price. This can work when you discover a game through the catalog and want continuing access after it leaves or after you cancel.

Run the math in two stages:
- Calculate the subscription cost for the discovery period.
- Add the actual member purchase price of any games you decide to keep.
Compare that combined total with buying the same games at their current sale prices without a subscription. The published maximums do not establish what your title will receive, and offers may exclude recent releases or other eligible-looking products. Microsoft Store offers also cannot be combined, so use the price shown at the time you buy.

Xbox Wire announced on September 3, 2026 that monthly cloud-gaming hours are scheduled to change beginning in November 2026. The announcement says availability and further purchasing details vary by market, and pricing details would follow. As of October 13, 2026, this is a planned policy change rather than a statement that the limits were already in force.
| Plan named in the announcement | Scheduled monthly cloud hours from November 2026 |
|---|---|
| Ultimate | 15 hours |
| Premium | 10 hours |
| Essential | 5 hours |
Xbox said the change was expected to affect 4% of Game Pass subscribers, an Xbox-published estimate rather than an independent measurement. If cloud play is central to your choice, check the terms for your market immediately before subscribing and compare the planned hours with your own monthly use. Someone who plays mainly on installed console or PC games may see little effect; a frequent cloud player should include the limit in the value calculation.
Common comparison mistakes and their fixes
Using the catalog count as the value
A count of hundreds of games does not tell you how many match your taste or remain available. Replace the count with a list of titles you will actually play and verify each title’s plan and platform.
Comparing different time horizons
Comparing one month of Game Pass with years of ownership makes the subscription look artificially cheap. Use the same period for both options. If you want access for 12 months, calculate 12 months of subscription charges against the current purchase prices of the games you would keep.

Forgetting automatic renewal
A promotional first month or other introductory offer may convert to the regular recurring price. Check the renewal date and cancel before it if you do not intend to continue. Include every paid month in your subscription total.
Counting unused benefits
Do not assign a cash value to online multiplayer, cloud gaming or another feature you will not use. A benefit saves money only when it replaces a purchase or materially changes your plan.
Ignoring regional and platform differences
Xbox states that titles, catalog size, features and availability vary by time, plan, region and platform. US prices in this comparison do not establish what another country will pay. Check the account and storefront you will actually use.
A practical decision checklist
- Have you selected a fixed comparison period?
- Is every desired game in the plan you are pricing, on your platform and in your region?
- Have you entered current sale prices rather than a guessed discount percentage?
- Will you keep paying after the first month, and have you included all those months?
- Would you otherwise pay for online multiplayer or another included benefit?
- Do you need to replay the same games after canceling or after a title leaves the catalog?
- Have you checked the actual member price instead of assuming the maximum discount?
- If you use cloud gaming, does the scheduled November 2026 allowance fit your monthly hours?
Answering these questions usually reveals the cheaper route without relying on a universal verdict. A short, specific list and long replay horizon favor purchases; a broad list of included games played during a concentrated subscription period favors Game Pass.
Bottom line for your comparison
Game Pass is a recurring payment for temporary access to an evolving catalog, with possible multiplayer, cloud and purchase-discount benefits. Buying during sales is an upfront cost for selected games you intend to keep available beyond the subscription period. Neither is inherently cheaper: use your real game list, real storefront prices and realistic months of play. The answer is the option with the lower total after counting only benefits you will actually use.
