Microsoft’s Xbox handheld is not a portable Xbox Series X|S. It is a pair of ASUS-made Windows 11 gaming PCs—the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X—with Xbox software integration, Game Pass access, PC storefront support, cloud gaming, and Xbox Remote Play.
Microsoft and ASUS unveiled the devices on June 8, 2025. Both launched on October 16, 2025, initially across 45 countries. They are now available through Xbox, ASUS, and participating retailers where supported, although pricing and stock vary by region.

- ROG Xbox Ally X: the faster premium model with more memory, storage, and battery capacity.
Both run Windows 11 Home, use AMD processors, and combine ASUS ROG hardware with an Xbox-oriented software experience. That means they can install and run compatible Windows PC games, access Xbox PC games and Game Pass, stream supported titles through Xbox Cloud Gaming, and stream games from an existing Xbox console through Remote Play.

What makes it an Xbox?
The Xbox identity comes mainly from the software and services rather than the underlying console hardware. The devices integrate:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- An Xbox-oriented full-screen interface designed for controller navigation.
- Xbox account and library features.
- The Xbox PC app and PC Game Pass.
- Xbox Play Anywhere support for compatible games.
- Xbox Cloud Gaming where supported.
- Xbox Remote Play from an existing Xbox console.
- Xbox Game Bar controls and ASUS Armoury Crate device controls.
Underneath that interface is still Windows. Users may encounter desktop windows, launcher sign-ins, driver updates, game-specific settings, anti-cheat limitations, and other PC-management tasks. The Xbox layer is intended to reduce that friction, not turn Windows into a closed console operating system.
The Xbox Full Screen Experience and Xbox mode
The handhelds can boot into an Xbox-style full-screen experience that emphasizes games rather than the Windows desktop. It provides access to Xbox and Game Pass titles, installed games from PC storefronts, Battle.net games, apps, settings, Game Bar controls, and ASUS hardware controls.
Microsoft says the mode minimizes background activity and defers non-essential tasks so more resources can be directed toward gameplay. Its library design is also intended to aggregate games installed through Xbox, Game Pass, Battle.net, and other supported PC storefronts.
That original handheld feature later became the foundation for Xbox mode, which Microsoft began rolling out to select Windows 11 PCs in April 2026. Xbox mode is a broader Windows update; it should not be confused with the launch-era handheld interface itself. Details are available in Microsoft’s Xbox mode announcement.

Native Windows PC games
Because both devices run Windows 11, they can install compatible PC games from the Xbox PC app, Steam, Battle.net, and other Windows-compatible storefronts. Standalone Windows applications and supported mods are also possible.
This flexibility is a major advantage over a closed console, but it also means compatibility varies by game. A title may need lower settings, a reduced resolution, an upscaler, a different control layout, or a launcher workaround.
Xbox Play Anywhere
Compatible Xbox Play Anywhere games can share purchases, progress, and achievements between Xbox consoles, Windows PCs, and the Xbox Ally handhelds. Microsoft said more than 1,000 games supported the program at launch, although the exact catalog is subject to change.
Play Anywhere support matters because it can provide a genuine cross-device Xbox experience. It does not mean every Xbox console game has a Windows version.

Game Pass
Game Pass can provide access to its supported PC catalog on the handheld, subject to the current plan, regional rules, and catalog availability. It is not required for every use case: purchased Windows games can be played without a subscription.
Game Pass is generally relevant for cloud gaming and for accessing the subscription catalog, but the required plan and benefits vary by country and can change. Do not assume that buying a handheld automatically includes Game Pass; Microsoft offered limited, market-specific bundles and promotions.
Xbox Cloud Gaming
Supported games can be streamed through Xbox Cloud Gaming instead of installed locally. This is useful for games without a compatible Windows version, but it depends on an eligible subscription or entitlement, regional availability, Microsoft’s current catalog, and a sufficiently fast, low-latency connection.
Cloud gaming also depends on network conditions. Weak Wi-Fi, congestion, high latency, or service interruptions can produce input delay, image quality problems, or disconnections.
Xbox Remote Play
Remote Play streams games installed on the user’s Xbox console to the handheld. The console remains responsible for running the game, so Remote Play is not native installation and does not remove the need to own or configure the Xbox.
The Xbox must be configured for remote features and available through its power or sleep settings. Home-network quality and internet conditions affect the result.
Can it play every Xbox game?
No. The Ally handhelds do not run the Xbox console operating system, so an Xbox console-only game cannot simply be installed as Xbox software.
Native local play generally requires a compatible Windows PC version. Other Xbox games may be playable through Play Anywhere, Xbox Cloud Gaming, or Remote Play. These are different mechanisms:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Native PC play: the game’s Windows version runs on the handheld.
- Play Anywhere: a supported purchase and save system links Xbox and Windows versions.
- Cloud Gaming: Microsoft’s servers run the game and stream it to the handheld.
- Remote Play: the user’s Xbox console runs the game and streams it to the handheld.
A game appearing in the aggregated library also does not guarantee native compatibility. It may require a separate launcher, be console-only, be unsupported, or run poorly at the handheld’s available power level. Microsoft’s handheld compatibility coverage uses categories such as optimized and mostly compatible rather than promising universal support.
Launch date, availability, and pricing
The devices were revealed on June 8, 2025, with Microsoft initially targeting the 2025 holiday season. Microsoft confirmed worldwide availability beginning October 16, 2025, across 45 countries, with further markets expected to follow.
In the United States, Microsoft directed buyers to Xbox.com. In other markets, buyers were directed to ASUS’s eShop and participating retailers. Actual availability, stock, taxes, bundles, and prices depend on location.

- [Xbox experience brought to life by ROG] : The Xbox gaming legacy meets ROG's decades of premium hardware design in the ROG Xbox Ally. Boot straight into the Xbox experience just like a console.
- [Xbox Game Bar integration] : Launch Game Bar with a tap of the Xbox button or play your favorite titles natively from platforms like Xbox Game Pass, Steam, Epic Games, or Windows games on the go.
- [All your games, all your progress]: Powered by Windows 11, the ROG Xbox Ally gives you access to your full library of PC games from Xbox and other game stores. With Xbox Play Anywhere, you can pick up right where you left off on your PC or Xbox and jump back into the game anytime.
- [Never stop gaming]: Powered by ultra-efficient AMD Ryzen Z2 A processor, the ROG Xbox Ally offers console-caliber performance and can game for hours, even away from a wall outlet.
- [Game-ready storage and fast memory]: Store your full library and multitask seamlessly with 512GB SSD and 16GB of LPDDR5 6400MHz RAM. The ROG Xbox Ally makes playing any game in the palm of your hand possible.
The official ASUS U.S. listing retrieved for the Ally X shows a price of $999.99. That is a current product-page price signal, not a universal global price. ASUS regional pages have shown different prices, including S$1,499 in Singapore and €999 on its Belgium/French-language page. The standard Ally’s current U.S. price is not established by the cited official pages, so it should be checked on the live Xbox or ASUS listing before purchase.
Performance and battery expectations
The Ally X has the higher performance ceiling because it combines the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor with faster memory, 24GB of RAM, and a larger 80Wh battery. The standard Ally is aimed more at lower-cost ownership and lighter workloads.
ASUS publishes internal comparisons between the ROG Xbox Ally X and the older ROG Ally X. Examples include:
- DOOM: The Dark Ages: 41 fps versus 28 fps.
- Indiana Jones and the Great Circle: 61 fps versus 38 fps.
- Cyberpunk 2077: 41 fps versus 31 fps.
These are ASUS test results, not independent benchmarks. The comparison uses specified processors and power settings, including Turbo mode and AC power. Frame rates should not be treated as guarantees for every game or configuration. Resolution, graphics preset, TDP, charger state, upscaling, frame generation, drivers, and game versions all matter.
ASUS also promotes up to twice the battery life in a specific comparison involving Hollow Knight: Silksong at 720p, 60 fps, low settings, and Silent mode. That is a controlled manufacturer claim, not a universal battery-life figure. Demanding AAA games at high wattage can drain either handheld quickly, even with the Ally X’s 80Wh battery.

Choose the ROG Xbox Ally if:
- You want the Xbox-integrated Windows experience at the lower end of the lineup.
- You mainly play indie, older, esports, or moderately demanding PC games.
- You can manage with 512GB or plan to upgrade the SSD.
- You value lower cost more than maximum performance and battery capacity.
Choose the ROG Xbox Ally X if:
- You play demanding AAA games and want more performance headroom.
- You need 24GB of memory and 1TB of storage.
- You expect to play away from a charger more often.
- You want impulse triggers and USB4 connectivity.
- You accept the higher price and additional 45g of weight.
Consider neither if:
- You want a simple, appliance-like console with no Windows desktop or launcher management.
- You expect every Xbox console game to install and run locally.
- You mainly play at home and already have an Xbox Series X|S or gaming PC.
- You need long battery life during high-performance AAA gaming away from an outlet.
- You do not want to troubleshoot updates, drivers, launchers, sleep behavior, or controller compatibility.
Important buying considerations
Storage
Modern PC games can occupy tens or more than 100GB. After Windows, updates, recovery files, and games are installed, the standard Ally’s 512GB drive leaves less usable space than the headline capacity suggests. Both models’ M.2 2280 SSD design makes storage expansion a practical option, but buyers should confirm compatibility, installation requirements, physical clearance, and warranty implications before replacing a drive.
Accessories
A protective case, screen protection, USB-C dock, suitable charger, microSD card, or external storage can make the handheld more useful. USB-C accessories must provide the required power and support the necessary display and data standards. Microsoft also identified Designed for Xbox accessories such as travel cases and storage-related accessories, sold separately.
Windows versus console simplicity
The same Windows foundation that enables Steam, Battle.net, mods, Discord, browsers, and other applications can introduce desktop prompts, multiple accounts, launchers, updates, and inconsistent game controls. The Xbox interface improves access, but it does not eliminate the responsibilities of owning a small Windows PC.
Is the ROG Xbox Ally a real Xbox?
In the ecosystem sense, yes; in the traditional hardware sense, no. It is an Xbox-branded device with Xbox accounts, Game Pass, Play Anywhere, Cloud Gaming, Remote Play, and a dedicated Xbox interface. But ASUS makes the hardware, AMD supplies the processors, and Windows 11 is the operating system.
It should therefore be understood as Microsoft’s portable Xbox experience delivered through an ASUS gaming PC—not as a battery-powered Xbox Series console or a guaranteed way to play every Xbox game locally.
