Microsoft reported Xbox hardware revenue growth of 172% year over year in its fiscal 2021 fourth quarter, but that figure does not mean console unit sales rose 172%. The quarter ended June 30, 2021; Microsoft reported $3.7 billion in total gaming revenue, up 11% year over year.
What the 172% figure measured
The 172% was year-over-year growth in Xbox hardware revenue for Microsoft’s FY2021 Q4. It was not a count of consoles sold, and Microsoft did not disclose specific hardware revenue or Xbox Series X|S unit-sales figures in the reporting cited by GeekWire.

How to read the headline alongside later results
The 172% increase is a historical FY2021 Q4 comparison, not a current Xbox sales trend. Later Microsoft results in the supplied period reported different categories: Xbox content and services revenue decreased 5% year over year in FY2026 Q3 and 10% in FY2026 Q4. Neither figure measures hardware revenue, so neither establishes whether hardware revenue or console sales rose or fell in those quarters.
- Microsoft FY2026 Q3 results, released April 29, 2026: Xbox content and services revenue decreased 5% year over year.
- Microsoft FY2026 Q4 results, released July 29, 2026: Xbox content and services revenue decreased 10% year over year.
The official FY2026 releases’ listed highlights do not provide a hardware-growth figure comparable to the FY2021 Q4 headline. A like-for-like comparison needs the same fiscal-quarter basis and the same revenue category; content and services, hardware, total gaming revenue, and units sold are not interchangeable measures.
