Microsoft began testing mouse-and-keyboard controls for Xbox Cloud Gaming on Xbox consoles on May 7, 2025. The initial test was limited to selected Xbox Insider rings and selected cloud-enabled games, rather than being a universal feature for every Xbox title.
The feature has since expanded well beyond that first preview. Xbox said more than 130 cloud games supported mouse and keyboard in February 2026, rising to more than 190 in its March 2026 update. Support remains game-specific, and cloud availability, device compatibility, region, account entitlement, and service rollout can all affect whether it works for you.

What Microsoft announced in May 2025
The May 7, 2025 announcement brought mouse-and-keyboard input to cloud game sessions running directly on Xbox consoles. The test was available to Xbox Insiders in the Alpha Skip-Ahead, Alpha, Beta, and Delta rings, although Microsoft could roll the feature out gradually and participation in a ring did not guarantee immediate access.
This was an expansion of an earlier preview. Xbox Cloud Gaming had already supported mouse and keyboard in supported sessions through Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, and the Xbox app on Windows PCs. The important change was bringing that control option to cloud streaming on an Xbox console.

Microsoft also made clear that support depended on individual games. Developers decide whether a title accepts mouse and keyboard input, so the feature did not automatically apply to every game available through Xbox Cloud Gaming.

Cloud play is different from local console play
There are two separate scenarios:
- Local play: A game installed on the Xbox runs using the console’s own hardware.
- Cloud play: The game runs on Microsoft’s remote servers and the Xbox receives a video stream while sending your input back over the internet.
Xbox consoles have supported mouse and keyboard in some locally installed games since 2018. That does not mean the same game will accept those controls when streamed from the cloud. A title can support mouse and keyboard locally, on PC, or in one version of its cloud build without supporting the input method everywhere.
For that reason, the relevant question is not simply whether a game supports mouse and keyboard on Xbox. You need to confirm that the cloud version of the game supports them.
Who could test the feature?
The initial console preview was identified for these Xbox Insider rings:
- Alpha Skip-Ahead
- Alpha
- Beta
- Delta
Xbox Insider releases are preview software. They can include bugs, incomplete behavior, interface changes, regressions, and compatibility problems. Microsoft can also change, delay, or remove a test without notice.

The Xbox Insider Program provides access to preview features through the Xbox Insider Hub on Xbox consoles and Windows PCs. Joining is sensible for users who want early access and are comfortable reporting problems, but it is not ideal for anyone who depends on maximum console stability.

The May 2025 announcement should not be treated as a permanent guarantee that every member of those four rings will receive the feature today. Current availability is controlled by Microsoft’s active rollout and release notes.
Which games support mouse and keyboard?
Examples named during the initial coverage included:
- Fortnite
- Halo Infinite
- Call of Duty: Black Ops 6
- Cyberpunk 2077
Those examples are not an exhaustive or permanent list. Game support can change, and support in a local Xbox version does not automatically establish support in the cloud version.
Xbox’s later updates indicate that the catalog grew substantially. Its February 2026 update cited more than 130 cloud-playable games with mouse-and-keyboard support, while the March 2026 update raised that figure to more than 190. Those figures show that the capability expanded beyond the original Insider experiment, but they do not mean every listed game works on every device, in every region, or under every account entitlement.

What hardware do you need?
For the least ambiguous setup, use:
- A compatible Xbox console.
- A wired USB mouse and wired USB keyboard.
- Available USB ports on the console.
- A stable internet connection suitable for cloud streaming.
- An eligible Xbox Cloud Gaming subscription or other applicable entitlement.
- A cloud-playable game that supports mouse and keyboard.
Xbox’s later wording specifically refers to wired USB mice and keyboards for navigation in select games and apps. Wireless devices may work through a compatible USB receiver, but Microsoft does not establish that every Bluetooth keyboard-and-mouse combination will behave identically on every Xbox console. Wired peripherals are therefore the conservative recommendation.
Paying for an expensive competitive gaming mouse will not remove cloud latency. If the connection to Microsoft’s servers is the limiting factor, a higher polling rate or premium switch is unlikely to make the stream feel like a locally installed PC game.

The cloud session needs to detect mouse or keyboard activity before a game necessarily changes its control state. In the earlier PC and browser preview, Xbox documented behavior in which the interface could switch from controller prompts after the player moved the mouse or pressed a key.
Switching between a controller and mouse and keyboard could also be imperfect. Xbox’s March 2024 Insider notes documented an input-switching issue in at least one title, Atomic Heart. That information came from an earlier preview, but it illustrates the type of problem that can occur when a streaming session changes input modes.
Do not interpret a controller icon on screen as proof that the keyboard is unsupported. First move the mouse or press a key. Conversely, a mouse working in the Xbox dashboard does not prove that the current game supports mouse and keyboard.

The earlier browser preview could be enabled at Xbox.com/play by selecting the profile picture, opening Settings, and enabling Preview features. That documented path applied to the Edge, Chrome, and Windows Xbox app preview. It should not be presented as the exact procedure for the May 2025 console test, which was delivered through the relevant Insider ring and console update.

Cloud access requires an eligible Xbox entitlement, but the exact requirement depends on the game, plan, region, and Microsoft’s current policy. Some cloud-playable games may require a particular Game Pass tier, while access to other titles can depend on ownership or another qualifying entitlement.
Microsoft’s December 2025 cloud-gaming guide described multiple Game Pass plans and positioned Ultimate as the broadest option, including cloud gaming and a larger catalog. Plan names, prices, benefits, and eligibility are volatile, so check the current Xbox Game Pass page rather than relying on a historical price.
A subscription alone is not enough: the game must also be cloud-playable and must support mouse and keyboard in its cloud version.

Update: Xbox’s February 25, 2026 update said more than 130 cloud games supported mouse and keyboard. Its March 25, 2026 update said the number had grown to more than 190. The feature is therefore no longer accurately described as only a narrow Insider experiment, although support still depends on the individual game, device, region, account entitlement, and service rollout.

The original May 2025 report remains useful for understanding how the console test began. It is outdated, however, if read as proof that mouse-and-keyboard cloud gaming is still restricted to those four Insider rings. The practical situation is now a growing public capability with a title-by-title support model.
What to do if it does not work
The game still shows controller prompts
- Move the mouse or press a keyboard key after the cloud session starts.
- Confirm that the game supports mouse and keyboard in its cloud version.
- Restart the session with both USB devices already connected.
- Test another known-supported title to determine whether the problem is game-specific.
The mouse and keyboard work in the dashboard but not in the game
The game may not support the input method, or it may support mouse and keyboard locally but not while streamed. Dashboard recognition only proves that the console sees the peripherals; it does not establish in-game compatibility.
You cannot switch back to a controller
Press a controller button or move the mouse, depending on the title. If the input state remains stuck, end and restart the cloud session. Input switching was a documented class of preview limitation and does not necessarily indicate defective hardware.

The cloud session feels sluggish
- Use Ethernet where practical, or a strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection.
- Stop downloads and video streams competing for bandwidth.
- Move closer to the wireless access point.
- Compare the same game locally installed to determine whether cloud latency is the cause.
Mouse and keyboard do not eliminate network delay. Server distance, congestion, Wi-Fi interference, packet loss, and other connection conditions can still make a fast-paced game feel less responsive than local play.
The feature does not appear in Xbox Insider Hub
- Confirm that the console is enrolled in an eligible ring for the active test.
- Install the latest available console update.
- Restart the console.
- Check current Xbox Insider release notes.
Ring membership alone is not a guarantee of access, and the original May 2025 ring list should not be used as a current availability promise.
Is cloud mouse-and-keyboard gaming worth using?
It is increasingly useful for players who want PC-style controls without downloading a large game. It can be especially appealing for shooters, strategy games, management titles, and anyone using an Xbox connected to a television.
Its limitations are equally important: support remains selective, cloud latency can be noticeable, image quality depends on the stream, wireless peripheral compatibility is less certain, and input switching can still be awkward in some games.
Local Xbox play is the better option when the game is installed and low latency matters most. Xbox Cloud Gaming on a Windows PC may be more convenient for players who already have a PC and want simpler mouse-and-keyboard setup. A controller remains the safest choice for games without keyboard support or sessions where switching controls is unreliable.
For Xbox-console cloud play, the practical checklist is simple: use a supported game, connect wired USB peripherals, confirm your cloud entitlement, and make sure your network is stable. The feature is no longer just an Insider curiosity, but it is still not universal mouse-and-keyboard support across Xbox Cloud Gaming.
