As of September 2026, the newest listed OptiFine builds support Minecraft 26.1.2: OptiFine HD U K1 pre2, dated June 22, 2026, and OptiFine HD U K1 pre1, dated June 9, 2026. For Minecraft 1.21.11, the page lists OptiFine HD U J9 and U J8.

Before you download OptiFine
- Use Minecraft: Java Edition. OptiFine is a Java Edition mod. It cannot be installed into Bedrock Edition with the Java installer. Check the official Minecraft download page if you need to install or update the launcher.
- Know your Minecraft version. OptiFine downloads are grouped by exact Minecraft version. A build listed for 1.21.11 should not be assumed to support 26.1.2, or any other release.
- Close Minecraft and the launcher before installing to reduce the chance of files being locked or the wrong profile being selected.
Step 1: Check your Minecraft Java version
Open the Minecraft Launcher and look at the Java Edition installation you intend to use. Record its exact version, including smaller revision numbers such as 1.21.11. If you have not installed the launcher, use the Microsoft Store or the Download Launcher button on the official Minecraft download page. If the launcher is not updating automatically, Microsoft says it can be updated through Microsoft Store → Library.

Step 2: Open the official OptiFine download page
Go to optifine.net/downloads. The site organizes releases under Minecraft version headings. Scroll to the heading that exactly matches the version shown in your Java Edition installation.
Current examples include:

The page also lists older versions, but availability is not universal. Gaps in the list mean you should not claim that OptiFine supports every Minecraft release.
Step 3: Download the matching JAR file
Find the build you want and choose one of the two links shown for it:

Both labels appear on the official OptiFine page. If you want to avoid the advertising redirect, use the official (Mirror) link. Download only from the official OptiFine domain or the links presented on its official downloads page; do not substitute an unrelated third-party download site.

Windows may warn that the file type is unfamiliar. Confirm that the downloaded file ends in .jar, not .jar.exe. If file extensions are hidden, enable View → Show → File name extensions in File Explorer so you can inspect the full name.
Step 4: Open the OptiFine installer
Locate the downloaded JAR file, usually in your Downloads folder, and double-click it. The OptiFine installer should open. Select Install and wait for the installation to finish.
The official download flow does not require a command in Command Prompt or PowerShell. It also does not require manually copying files into a Minecraft JAR or deleting META-INF. Those instructions describe old, version-specific installation methods and should not be treated as the normal Windows 11 procedure.
Historical OptiFine documentation refers to launcher labels such as Edit Profile, Use version, and Game Directory, as well as old folders such as %APPDATA%.minecraftbin. Those are not reliable current Windows 11 instructions. Use the current Minecraft Launcher and the downloaded installer instead.

Step 5: Launch the installed version
Reopen the Minecraft Launcher and select the Java Edition installation created or updated for the OptiFine build you installed. The exact profile name and launcher layout can vary, so do not assume that every current launcher displays a profile named exactly OptiFine.
Before pressing Play, verify that the selected installation uses the same Minecraft version as the OptiFine file. Start the game and open Options → Video Settings. OptiFine-specific settings and performance options indicate that the mod loaded.
Do you need to install Java 8 first?
Not as a universal rule. Oracle’s current consumer download page lists Java 8 Update 501, released July 21, 2026, but it describes that package as Java for running separately installed desktop applications. It does not establish that Oracle Java 8 is required for the current Minecraft Launcher or every current OptiFine build.
If double-clicking the JAR does nothing, Java file association or the Java runtime may be the problem. First confirm that you downloaded the correct JAR and that the launcher is installed and updated. Avoid presenting “install Java 8 before OptiFine” as a requirement without identifying the exact Minecraft version, OptiFine build, and launcher configuration involved. The relevant Java download page is java.com/en/download/manual.jsp.

Using OptiFine with Forge or other mods
The OptiFine FAQ says OptiFine should generally be installed last when used with other mods, except for mods specifically designed to be installed after it. The FAQ also says OptiFine generally should not be included in a modpack unless the OptiFine authors have granted explicit permission.
For the Minecraft 1.21.11 entries currently shown on the official downloads page, Forge versions 61.0.8 and 61.0.7 are listed alongside the matching OptiFine builds. That information does not mean every Minecraft version or mod loader combination is compatible. Follow the compatibility requirements for the exact build and loader you are using.
Older OptiFine installation instructions specifically say to install OptiFine after Forge or ModLoader. Because those instructions are historical, do not generalize them to every modern loader without checking the relevant version information.

Which OptiFine edition should you use?
OptiFine’s FAQ describes three editions:
- Ultra: the most popular edition, with the most optimizations and features intended to increase FPS.
- Standard: described as more compatible with other mods.
- Light: potentially more useful for underpowered laptops and notebooks, but lacking advanced features and incompatible with ModLoader or Forge.
Current download entries use names such as OptiFine HD U K1 pre2 and OptiFine HD U J9; the downloads page does not show a separate Ultra, Standard, or Light selector beside those entries. Choose from the build listed under your Minecraft version rather than looking for an edition button that may not be present.

OptiFine troubleshooting on Windows 11
The JAR does not open
- Check that the file is a real
.jar, not an executable with a hidden extra extension. - Confirm that you downloaded the build for the exact Minecraft version you plan to launch.
- Make sure the Minecraft Launcher is installed and updated.
- If Windows has no application associated with JAR files, correct the Java installation or association for your configuration rather than downloading an OptiFine file from another site.
The game starts, but OptiFine settings are missing
Exit the game and recheck the selected launcher installation. A frequent cause is launching vanilla Minecraft or a different version than the one associated with the OptiFine build.
FPS is unchanged or lower
OptiFine does not guarantee that FPS will double. The official FAQ lists several reasons performance may remain the same or decline:
- Render Distance Extreme can be demanding.
- Antialiasing and Anisotropic Filtering can reduce performance.
- An FPS limiter may already be enabled under Video Settings.
- HD texture packs can activate features such as Connected Textures, Custom Sky, Random Mobs, and Custom Animations, which may reduce FPS.
- Improper installation or a mod conflict can affect performance.
For a clean starting point, use Video Settings → Other → Reset Video Settings. Compare performance using identical conditions: the same world, texture pack, render distance, and other relevant settings.

OptiFine identifies Chunk Loading: Multi-Core combined with graphics-driver incompatibility as a likely cause. Open your graphics-card control panel and turn Threaded Optimization or OpenGL Threading off. OptiFine recommends disabling the setting globally rather than only for java.exe or minecraft.exe.
The game reports many errors or crashes
Check the Minecraft error log. OptiFine lists incomplete installation and conflicts with other mods among the possible causes. Temporarily testing the matching OptiFine build without other mods can help identify whether the conflict is with OptiFine, another mod, or the launcher installation.
