Xbox is expanding access to its cloud-gaming app on smart TVs, so people with supported sets can play without buying an Xbox console. The rollout includes select VIDAA-powered TVs and a planned TCL integration, alongside existing support for some LG and Samsung TVs and Amazon Fire TV devices. This is Xbox entering more living rooms as a gaming service—not evidence it is manufacturing televisions or producing TV shows.
What Xbox is bringing to TVs
The Xbox app streams games from the cloud to compatible screens. It does not turn a TV into a console running games locally. Xbox says players can carry progress, friends, achievements, and saves across its ecosystem, but TV streaming should not be treated as a replacement for every console feature.
The rollout is widening in stages. On July 30, 2026, Xbox said it had begun rolling the app out to millions of VIDAA OS-powered TVs from 2024–2026, including supported Hisense models. The “millions” figure describes the potential TV population, not activated users. On September 4, 2026, Xbox and TCL announced a partnership to bring the app to select TCL Smart TVs “in the coming months.” The integration is not yet a live, generally available feature based on that announcement: TCL says eligibility will arrive in phases through future software updates, with supported models, markets, and timing to be announced. Xbox said the partnership could reach TCL TV users in more than 25 countries; that is potential reach, not a count of countries where the app is already available. Xbox Wire, September 4, 2026

Which TVs and devices support Xbox cloud gaming?
Compatibility depends on the exact model, operating-system version, region, and rollout status. Xbox’s device page is the best current place to check before buying a TV or streaming device.

Use Xbox’s XBOX on TVs compatibility page for the latest listed devices and setup conditions. For the Samsung support change, see Windows Central’s October 2026 report; because it conflicts with the broader Xbox listing, treat the reported date as an attributed warning rather than a confirmed universal cutoff.

What you need to play
- A supported TV or streaming device. For VIDAA, Xbox specifies OS 9.6 or higher; other platforms have their own model and software requirements.
- A compatible controller. An Xbox-branded controller is not mandatory for supported VIDAA devices. Xbox lists the Xbox Wireless Controller, Xbox Adaptive Controller, Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2, PlayStation DualSense, and DualShock 4. Check the device-specific guidance for your setup. - An internet connection. Xbox recommends a wired connection or 5 GHz Wi-Fi and 20 Mbps or higher for best performance. This is company setup guidance, not a performance guarantee: results vary with connection, location, device, and other factors. Xbox’s TV setup guidance
- An entitlement to play the game. Most available cloud games require an active Game Pass subscription, though Xbox says exceptions exist. Xbox and TCL also say cloud playtime can be included with Game Pass or sold separately; check current terms and availability in your region.
The app does not make every Xbox game available on every TV. Game selection, features, and access can change by time, region, device, and plan.
TV app, Fire TV, or Xbox console?
The right route depends on whether you want to stream games on hardware you already own or play locally on a dedicated console.

Xbox’s TV app is most useful if your device is already supported and you are comfortable with streaming. If you want local play or need features that cloud streaming does not provide, compare the console experience and its requirements directly rather than treating the TV app as an equivalent.

The concrete business move is distribution: Xbox is putting its gaming app on more TV operating systems and partnering with manufacturers to reach customers who may not own dedicated gaming hardware. Xbox’s July announcement described the goal as bringing Xbox to more devices players already own. That explains the strategy, but company statements do not establish consumer adoption, sales impact, or market share.

For players, the practical change is narrower and clearer: a supported TV can become another screen for Xbox cloud gaming, subject to model eligibility, rollout, controller, network, and game-access requirements. TCL support remains forward-looking in the September announcement, while VIDAA rollout is underway rather than guaranteed on every compatible-looking set.
