Xbox has announced major job reductions in 2026, but the widely cited figure of more than 5,750 workers is a cumulative estimate from reporting—not an audited total published by Xbox. The available company and union statements also do not confirm that The Coalition is facing another round of cuts.
How many people has Xbox laid off?
There are two different kinds of figures in circulation: Xbox’s announced restructuring actions and a cumulative estimate reported by Game Developer.
| Date and source | Figure | What it describes |
|---|---|---|
| July 6, 2026 — Xbox | Approximately 3,200 role reductions across FY27, including approximately 1,600 initially | A planned restructuring announced by Xbox CEO Asha Sharma. It did not mean all 3,200 reductions occurred on July 6. |
| September 22, 2026 — Xbox | 268 roles | Additional eliminations across Halo Studios, other first-party studios, and Xbox Game Studios management and central functions. |
| September 28, 2026 — Game Developer | At least 5,750 workers since October 2023 | A secondary report’s cumulative estimate. The report says the full scale of the post-merger reductions remains unclear; Xbox has not published this as an audited cumulative total in the company announcements cited here. |
Xbox said on September 22 that completed actions since July, including studio divestitures, had brought it roughly three-quarters of the way through the announced restructuring. That is the company’s progress estimate, not a separate headcount figure. The September announcement is part of the ongoing reset, so adding its 268 roles to the planned 3,200 as though both were fully separate, completed totals would be misleading.
What did Xbox announce in 2026?
July: a planned restructuring across FY27
In an employee message published July 6, Sharma announced approximately 3,200 role reductions across FY27, with approximately 1,600 taking place initially. She described the changes as the most significant restructuring in Xbox history. The message also said four studios would leave Xbox for new management and that no publicly announced first-party games or projects were being cancelled as part of those reductions. Xbox Wire’s July announcement gives the company’s stated scope and rationale.

September: 268 more roles announced
On September 22, Xbox said it was eliminating 268 roles across Halo Studios, other first-party studios, and Xbox Game Studios management and central functions. The company also described changes to studio reporting and development responsibilities. Its announcement did not identify The Coalition as a target. Xbox Wire’s September update outlines the cuts and the company’s restructuring-progress estimate.
Is The Coalition affected, and are more cuts coming?
The Xbox and Communications Workers of America statements available here do not establish that The Coalition is facing new cuts or that it was included in the September 22 reductions. Those sources do not quote Coalition staff expressing fear of future layoffs. The claim that the studio fears new cuts should therefore be treated as unverified, not as a confirmed development.

The available announcements also do not settle whether Xbox will make further changes. Xbox described its restructuring as ongoing in September, but that alone is not confirmation of another specific round, its timing, or which teams would be affected.

CWA’s response to the July cuts
The Communications Workers of America said its members were among those affected by the initial July layoffs. It called for bargaining over severance, internal placement, vendor-contract decisions, and recall rights. CWA reported that more than 3,500 Xbox workers had chosen to form unions with it since 2022. These are the union’s figures and positions, not company-published totals. CWA’s July 7 statement describes its demands.

Rallies and labor allegations
In August, CWA described rallies in the United States and Canada opposing layoffs and calling for fair first contracts. The union said it represented nearly 4,000 video-game workers at Xbox in those two countries and reported filing unfair-labor-practice charges with the National Labor Relations Board. That filing is CWA’s allegation; it is not, by itself, an NLRB finding. The union’s August 20 statement provides its account.
CWA’s expectation about the September cuts
In response to the 268-role announcement, CWA said it did not expect those specific layoffs to affect union-represented workers. That was the union’s expectation about the September action, not a guarantee about other employees or future changes. CWA’s September 22 statement records that response.
