A Steam game can launch normally while still requiring a Microsoft account, Xbox profile, or Steam–Xbox account link. The safest repair order is to check service status, sign out and back in with the correct Microsoft account, refresh the Xbox session in Windows, and only then clear game-specific credentials or repair services.
The exact menus differ between games and between Windows 10, Windows 11, and current app versions. The steps below are general, with clearly marked Sea of Thieves examples where the publisher documents a specific procedure.

Identify the failure before changing anything

A successful fix means the game shows the intended gamertag, reaches its main menu, loads the expected progress or cloud data, and—where applicable—allows multiplayer.

1. Check Xbox and game service status first
Check the Xbox service status and the individual game’s server-status page. A Microsoft or game outage cannot be repaired by reinstalling Steam or deleting credentials.

Also check whether:
- the problem affects every Xbox-enabled Steam game or only one title;
- a friend can sign in;
- the account works on another device; and
- the issue began at a specific date and time.
Sea of Thieves support specifically recommends checking both Xbox Live status and the game’s own service status for Xbox sign-in errors.
2. Sign out and back in inside the game
- Close the game completely.
- Restart Steam, then launch the game again.
- At the Xbox or Microsoft prompt, choose Sign out if that option is available.
- Restart the game and sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the intended Xbox gamertag and progress.
In Sea of Thieves, sign-out is available from the main menu or start screen. If the wrong account is shown, close the Steam Overlay with Shift+Tab, sign out, and repeat the process with the correct account. Other games may use different labels or an embedded browser.
3. Make sure you are using the correct Microsoft account
Do not assume the email used for Steam is the email attached to your Xbox profile. Common sources of confusion include:

- personal and work or school Microsoft accounts;
- several Outlook, Hotmail, Live, or Gmail-based Microsoft accounts;
- one account used on an Xbox console and another used on Windows;
- a newly created Xbox profile with no historical progress; and
- a gamertag whose associated email address is no longer obvious.
Use Microsoft’s account-identification guidance and sign-in help instead of repeatedly guessing passwords or creating duplicate accounts.
A Microsoft account can exist without a completed Xbox profile. Some games require an Xbox network profile even though they were purchased through Steam. Account creation is free, but subscription and online-feature requirements vary by game and region. For example, the Sea of Thieves Steam FAQ says Game Pass Core is not required merely to play its Steam edition; do not generalize that rule to every title.
4. Refresh the Xbox app and Microsoft Store session
This is particularly useful when browser sign-in succeeds but the game’s Windows authentication flow does not.

- Open the Xbox app.
- Sign out if the wrong account is active.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account intended for the game.
- Open Microsoft Store and check the account shown there.
- Update the Xbox app, Microsoft Store, Gaming Services, and the game where updates are available.
- Restart Windows and launch the Steam game again.
The Xbox app is not a universal requirement for every Xbox-enabled Steam game. Treat it as a useful diagnostic step unless the game’s own support documentation specifically requires it.
5. Verify the Steam–Xbox link before unlinking anything
Some games require a one-time association between the Steam profile and the Xbox profile:
- Launch the game from Steam.
- Sign in at the Microsoft/Xbox prompt.
- Check the gamertag displayed on the confirmation screen.
- Approve the link only if it is the correct account.
In Sea of Thieves, the confirmation appears through the Steam Overlay after Microsoft sign-in. The game’s official linking guide explains the process.
Do not unlink an account as a first fix
Progress, achievements, cloud data, purchases, or earned items may be attached to the Xbox account rather than the Steam account. The Sea of Thieves documentation warns that unlinking and using another Xbox account can make the original progress and items inaccessible until the original account is linked again.
Before unlinking, record the current gamertag and account email, confirm which account contains your progress, and follow the game publisher’s own unlink procedure. A new account may make the login prompt disappear while appearing to erase your progress.

Use this step for a login loop, repeated rejection of a valid password, a crashing sign-in window, or an old account that keeps returning after you changed or relinked accounts.

Documented Sea of Thieves Steam procedure
- Close the game.
- Open the Windows Start menu and search for Credential Manager.
- Open Windows Credentials.
- Find entries beginning with
Xbl_Ticket. - For the documented Sea of Thieves issue, remove entries whose names include
1717113201. - Restart the game and sign in again.
See the game’s official credential troubleshooting guide. This identifier is a game-specific documented example, not a universal fix for every Xbox-enabled Steam title. Delete only entries named by the affected game’s official support page; do not delete all Windows, Microsoft, Xbox, or Steam credentials.
7. Check Xbox and Gaming Services
Disabled or stopped services can prevent Windows Xbox authentication. This is especially relevant to errors resembling 0X409 0X80070422.
- Press Win+R.
- Enter
services.mscand press Enter. - Look for relevant entries such as Xbox Accessory Management Service, Xbox Live Auth Manager, Xbox Live Game Save, Xbox Live Networking Service, and Gaming Services.
- Open the relevant service’s Properties.
- Ensure it is not set to Disabled, then start or restart it according to the game’s instructions.
- Restart Windows.
Service names and startup behavior vary with Windows versions and installed components. Do not indiscriminately set every Windows service to Automatic. The Sea of Thieves troubleshooting guide provides a documented example of checking these services.

8. Reset the Microsoft Store cache
If the Store or Windows gaming identity layer appears inconsistent, reset the Store cache:
- Close Microsoft Store.
- Open Start and type
wsreset. - Run the command and approve permission if Windows requests it.
- Wait for the command window to close and Microsoft Store to reopen.
- Restart Windows and test the game.
wsreset refreshes Microsoft Store cache data; it is not a guaranteed repair for an incorrect Xbox account link. The procedure is also listed in the Sea of Thieves service troubleshooting guidance.
9. Fix a blank, missing, or crashing login window
- Enable the Steam Overlay for the affected game in Steam’s per-game properties.
- Restart Steam and Windows.
- Update Steam, the game, Windows, Xbox-related apps, and Gaming Services.
- Verify the game’s files in Steam.
- Temporarily test without a VPN or proxy, or use another network.
- Check whether firewall, antivirus, DNS filtering, or parental-control software is blocking Steam, the game, Xbox services, or Microsoft authentication.
- Repair or reset the affected Xbox app or other Windows gaming component through its installed-app settings.
- Clear only game-documented Xbox credentials.
Starting Steam as administrator can be a short diagnostic test, but it should not be treated as a permanent requirement. Disabling security software also carries risk: test briefly, prefer allow-listing, and re-enable protection immediately.

Reinstalling the game should be a last resort. It may not remove Microsoft authentication tokens, repair Windows services, or correct an account linked to the wrong Xbox profile.

If the game displays your intended gamertag, achievements, or account profile, authentication may already be working. Multiplayer can still fail because of:
- NAT or router restrictions;
- Teredo or Xbox networking problems;
- firewall rules;
- privacy or family settings;
- a game-server outage; or
- crossplay or platform limitations.
Check the game’s server status, Xbox networking information, router configuration, and account privacy settings. A multiplayer error is not proof that the Xbox login itself is broken.
11. Check privacy, family, regional, and enforcement restrictions
If the message mentions restrictions, review Xbox privacy and online-safety settings. Confirm that multiplayer and cross-network play are permitted, particularly for child or family accounts. Age, regional, and parental settings can prevent online features even when sign-in succeeds.
If Microsoft reports a suspension, stop reinstalling software. Microsoft describes enforcement and review options in its guidance on Xbox account bans and suspensions. A suspension is an account-enforcement issue, not a local Steam installation problem, and creating another account to evade it is not an appropriate fix.
Use the right support channel
- Microsoft account support: forgotten account identity, password, or general Microsoft sign-in failure.
- Xbox support: Xbox service status, Xbox profile, enforcement, and platform account issues.
- Game publisher: Steam–Xbox link ownership, game-specific token errors, progress tied to the wrong profile, and title-specific login flows.
- Steam support: ownership, installation, launch, Steam Overlay, and Steam-side account problems.
When contacting support, include the exact error text, affected game, Windows version, Steam account region, gamertag shown, whether other Xbox-enabled games work, and the date and time the problem started. Do not send passwords or authentication codes.
