Microsoft has confirmed Project Helix, its next-generation Xbox console, is designed to play both Xbox console games and PC games. The name “Magnus” is not an official retail name: it is a reported codename for the AMD silicon allegedly associated with Helix. Detailed hardware specifications, Steam and Epic support, full Windows access, pricing, and a 2027 launch remain unconfirmed.
The important distinction is between Microsoft’s confirmed platform direction and the leak-derived hardware story. Helix is real and officially announced. Magnus is a reported AMD chip codename, not a confirmed product name or final specification.

Project Helix versus “Magnus”
| Term | Status | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Project Helix | Confirmed | Microsoft’s codename for its next-generation first-party Xbox console. |
| Magnus | Reported | An alleged AMD silicon or APU codename linked by leaks and reporting to Helix. |
| Next-generation Xbox | Confirmed broader strategy | A platform effort spanning console, handheld, Windows PC, cloud, and accessories. |
Microsoft and AMD announced a multi-year next-generation Xbox hardware partnership on June 19, 2025. That announcement confirmed co-engineered AMD silicon but did not name Magnus or disclose final consumer specifications.
What Microsoft has actually confirmed
Microsoft’s March 2026 Project Helix announcement says the console:

Microsoft has also been bringing Xbox Mode to Windows 11, beginning in selected markets in April 2026. Its March 2026 GDC update said Xbox Play Anywhere had grown to more than 1,500 games. These developments support the idea of a more unified Xbox-and-Windows ecosystem, but they do not confirm that Helix will behave exactly like a desktop PC.

What the console-PC hybrid could mean
A successful hybrid would combine a TV-first Xbox experience with selected advantages of a PC:
Rank #2
- What's in the box: Xbox Series X console, 1 Xbox Wireless Controller - Carbon Black, Ultra High Speed HDMI cable, Power cord.
- Equipped with AMD's Zen 2 and RDNA 2 architectures, DirectX ray tracing delivers true-to-life lighting, shadows and accurate reflections to create dynamic, living worlds.
- Memory: 16GB GDDR6 w/320 bit-wide bus; Memory Bandwidth: 10 GB @ 560 GB/s, 6 GB @ 336 GB/s; Internal Storage: 1TB Custom NVME SSD
- Gaming Resolution: True 4K; Performance Target: Up to 120 FPS; High Dynamic Range: Up to 8K HDR; Optical Drive: 4K UHD Blu-Ray; HDMI Features: Auto Low Latency Mode, HDMI Variable Refresh Rate, AMD FreeSync.
- Bundled with HDMI_Cable
- A controller-optimized interface for the living room.
- Access to Xbox console games and Xbox services.
- Support for PC versions of games.
- A shared Microsoft account, library, saves, and social layer where developers support them.
- Console-style hardware optimization with more PC-like software flexibility.
- Potential access to several PC storefronts and launchers.
The strategic shift is significant. Rather than maintaining a completely closed console platform, Microsoft may be building a controlled living-room PC with an Xbox shell. However, “PC games” does not necessarily mean every Windows executable will run, and a Windows-derived foundation does not necessarily mean unrestricted Windows desktop access.
Will it run Steam, Epic, GOG, or Battle.net?
There is no official storefront list yet. Reporting has suggested that a PC-oriented Xbox could support launchers such as Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, Battle.net, and Riot Client. Windows Central has reported on the possibility of installing other PC stores, while Epic has reportedly shown interest in bringing its store to a future Xbox platform. Those claims remain separate from Microsoft’s official promise that Helix is designed to play PC games.
| Claim | Current status |
|---|---|
| PC games are part of Helix’s design | Confirmed by Microsoft. |
| Steam or Epic support | Reported possibility, not guaranteed. |
| GOG, Battle.net, or Riot Client | Speculative; no final support list. |
| Unrestricted sideloading | Unconfirmed. |
Even if third-party launchers are permitted, they may require separate accounts and purchases. Games may not receive Xbox achievements, Quick Resume, unified parental controls, cross-save, or Xbox refunds. A title that launches successfully may also require a keyboard and mouse, expose a desktop-style interface, or fail because of anti-cheat requirements.

- QUICK RESUME — Seamlessly switch between multiple games and resume exactly where you left off. No more waiting through title screens and loading bars.
- FOUR GENERATIONS OF GAMES — Play thousands of games from XBOX Series X|S, XBOX One, XBOX 360, and Original XBOX, with many titles enhanced for better visuals and performance on XBOX Series X. This is an all-digital console; use with digital games only. Console does not play physical discs.
Windows Central’s reporting on the proposed PC-style Xbox is available here. It should be read as reporting about plans and leaks, not as a final Microsoft specification.
Will Helix run the full Windows desktop?
That remains unknown. Microsoft could use Windows technologies underneath a locked-down Xbox shell, permit an optional desktop mode, or provide only approved installers and runtimes. It could also restrict driver changes, BIOS access, executable installation, mod tools, DLL injection, or alternative operating systems.
“Windows-based” and “open Windows PC” are therefore not interchangeable. The software policy may matter more than the underlying operating system. A controlled environment could deliver faster updates and a simpler console experience, while a truly open environment would offer broader compatibility but introduce drivers, crashes, malware, launcher conflicts, and PC-style maintenance.

The reported Magnus hardware
Leaks and specialist reporting have associated Magnus with a high-end AMD design that could be more PC-like than the monolithic APUs used in previous Xbox generations. Reported elements include future Zen CPU technology, a next-generation RDNA graphics architecture, shared memory, an NPU, and possible chiplet-style construction.
| Feature | Status | Safe interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Custom AMD SoC | Confirmed | Microsoft says Helix uses custom AMD silicon. |
| Zen 6 or Zen 6C CPU | Leak | Reported, not officially specified. |
| RDNA 5 or GFX13-family graphics | Leak/reporting | Unconfirmed future graphics architecture. |
| Approximately 10 or 11 CPU cores | Leak | Do not treat as a final core count. |
| 40-plus or roughly 60-plus compute units | Leak | A reported estimate, not a performance guarantee. |
| Up to 48GB of GDDR7 | Leak | Unverified memory-capacity claim. |
| NPU near 110 TOPS | Leak | Reported estimate with no official confirmation. |
| 4K/120 or 4K/144 gaming | Speculation | A reported target, not a guaranteed output. |
| 2027 release | Possible target | Supported by AMD-related comments, but no confirmed Microsoft date. |
Reports from Notebookcheck, TechSpot, and Pure Xbox attribute these details to leaks and interpretations rather than Microsoft or AMD product documentation.

How powerful could it be?
If even the broad direction of the leaks is accurate, Helix could offer substantially more CPU capability, memory, and ray-tracing potential than current consoles. A PC-like platform could also make it easier to scale games across Xbox, Windows, handhelds, and cloud hardware.

But compute-unit counts alone cannot predict frame rates. Real performance will depend on clocks, memory bandwidth, CPU/GPU allocation, cooling, power limits, storage, operating-system overhead, developer optimization, upscaling, frame generation, and whether a game uses a native Xbox build or a Windows PC build. Microsoft has described next-generation DirectX and FSR work as a major performance step, but it has not published retail benchmarks, a final resolution target, or a frame-rate guarantee.

“Plays PC games” can describe several different paths:
- Xbox Play Anywhere: Supported purchases provide both console and Windows versions.
- PC Game Pass: Games available through Microsoft’s PC ecosystem.
- Microsoft Store PC games: Windows builds distributed by Microsoft.
- Third-party storefronts: Steam, Epic, GOG, or other launchers if Helix permits them.
- Cloud or remote play: Streaming rather than local execution.
- Older Xbox games: Console backward compatibility, emulation, recompiled builds, or other title-specific methods.
Xbox Play Anywhere does not turn every Xbox purchase into a Steam or Epic entitlement. Likewise, Microsoft has not promised that every Xbox game ever released will work on Helix. Licensing, delisted software, regional editions, online servers, peripherals, and title-specific compatibility can all matter. A complete backward-compatibility list and ownership policy are still needed.

Why the hybrid could be attractive
- One living-room device could cover Xbox and PC libraries.
- PC gaming could become easier to use from a television and controller.
- Xbox services, Game Pass, saves, and social features could span more devices.
- A high-end design could improve CPU-heavy games and ray tracing.
- Buyers might avoid maintaining a conventional desktop gaming setup.
What could go wrong
- Advanced hardware could make the system substantially more expensive than a traditional console.
- Multiple launchers could fragment libraries, refunds, achievements, overlays, and support.
- PC games may not have suitable controller interfaces or television-scale text.
- Anti-cheat systems could reject a modified or restricted console environment.
- A locked-down Xbox mode could block mods, emulators, unofficial software, or driver changes.
- A full desktop could bring security and maintenance problems associated with PCs.
- Limited hardware access could prevent upgrades, BIOS changes, or component replacement.
The AMD partnership proves that Microsoft is investing in a long-term hardware roadmap; it does not verify every Magnus specification. Similarly, AMD CEO Lisa Su has reportedly discussed an SoC capable of supporting a 2027 launch, but that is not a Microsoft-confirmed release date. See the timing report from Tom’s Hardware.
Should you wait or buy a PC now?
| Your priority | Most sensible choice |
|---|---|
| Confirmed full Windows access, mods, upgrades, and broad storefront support today | Buy a Windows gaming PC. |
| Xbox services and console gaming now | Consider current Xbox hardware and Game Pass. |
| Portable access to Microsoft’s Xbox-on-Windows direction | Consider an Xbox-branded Windows handheld such as the ROG Xbox Ally, while remembering that its performance and battery life differ from a future console. |
| Maximum storefront freedom | Choose a standard gaming PC rather than waiting for unconfirmed Helix policies. |
| One future living-room box for Xbox and PC games | Wait for Microsoft to publish price, release timing, compatibility, and storefront details. |
Final verdict
Project Helix confirms Microsoft is moving toward an Xbox that can play both console and PC games. That is the real news behind the Magnus leak. The alleged AMD architecture may explain how Microsoft could deliver the hybrid, but the exact chip, Windows access, third-party storefronts, performance, price, and launch date are still unresolved.
Until Microsoft publishes those details, treat “Magnus” as a useful leak label—not an official product specification—and judge the project primarily by its eventual software policy. The defining question is not only how powerful the hardware will be, but how open Microsoft allows the Xbox-PC experience to become.
