CVE-2025-59489PATCH 2026.09.05

Microsoft and Steam Take Action as Unity Vulnerability Puts Games at Risk

By VGSources Team 8 min read

Unity vulnerability CVE-2025-59489 is real, but it does not mean every Unity game has been hacked. Unity disclosed the high-severity flaw in October 2025 after patches became available on October 2. Microsoft updated Defender and temporarily removed some affected titles from its distribution catalog, while Valve added protections to Steam according to Unity. Those measures reduce risk, but only a developer update or approved binary patch replaces the vulnerable Unity runtime inside a game.

The flaw primarily affects applications built with vulnerable Unity Editor versions from Unity 2017.1 onward on Android, Windows, Linux and macOS. Unity says it had found no evidence of exploitation or customer impact in its advisory, but developers and players should still treat unpatched builds carefully.

The short version for players

  • Update Windows, Steam, Android and every affected game.
  • Keep Microsoft Defender or another reputable security product enabled and current.
  • Do not run games as administrator unless there is a specific, unavoidable reason.
  • A Steam launch does not prove that the individual game has been rebuilt.
  • Do not uninstall a game automatically. Remove it temporarily only when its publisher or platform specifically instructs you to do so.
  • Avoid unofficial launchers, suspicious downloads and untrusted mods.

For most players, the correct response is ordinary patching and cautious software hygiene—not panic or a blanket uninstall of Unity games.

In simplified terms, vulnerable Unity applications can be tricked into loading native or managed components from an unsafe location. The issue is associated with command-line arguments and the way the Unity runtime handles local files and extensions. If an attacker can place or control a malicious file and cause the vulnerable application to load it, the result may include local code execution or information disclosure.

This is not the same as an unrestricted internet-facing remote-code-execution flaw. Exploitation is local in nature and depends on circumstances such as the operating system, application configuration, launch path, attacker-controlled files and the permissions available to the game. A successful exploit is constrained by the privileges of the vulnerable application and the data it can access.

Windows applications that register custom URI handlers deserve particular attention. A malicious link or local process may be able to trigger an application’s launch behavior without the user manually entering a command line. Running a game with administrator privileges can also increase the consequences of a successful attack, although standard-user execution does not make the vulnerability harmless.

Unity’s advisory currently says it found no evidence of exploitation or user impact. That means there is no reported evidence in Unity’s assessment; it does not establish that every vulnerable installation is safe or that exploitation is impossible.

Which games and platforms may be affected?

Unity says applications built with affected Editor versions from Unity 2017.1 onward may require action. The main platforms named as affected are:

  • Android
  • Windows
  • Linux
  • macOS

Exposure is title-specific. A game’s Unity version, launch configuration, platform packaging, custom URI registrations, security controls and distribution method all matter. A game can also contain a vulnerable Unity-based launcher, configuration utility, artbook viewer or companion application even when its main game uses another engine.

For example, PC Gamer reported that Avowed was affected indirectly because its digital artbook launcher used Unity, although the main game used Unreal Engine 5.

Unity reported no findings suggesting exploitation on iOS, visionOS, tvOS, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, UWP, Quest or WebGL. “No findings” should be read as the current state of Unity’s assessment, not as an unconditional guarantee that every application on those platforms is immune. Unity still recommends rebuilding with an updated Editor where practical.

What Microsoft changed

Microsoft Defender

According to Unity’s remediation guidance, Microsoft updated Defender to detect and block the vulnerability on Windows. Microsoft’s related advisory is ADV256762.

Defender is a defense-in-depth measure. It can help identify or stop suspicious exploitation behavior, but it does not rebuild a game, replace its embedded Unity runtime or guarantee protection against every future variation. Keep Defender enabled and updated, but do not treat it as a substitute for a patched game.

Temporary removal of some Microsoft-distributed games

Microsoft also temporarily removed some affected games from storefront availability while patches were prepared. Reported examples included Fallout Shelter, Pentiment, Wasteland Remastered and Wasteland 3.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This was not a blanket removal of every Unity game, nor was it a Steam ban. Microsoft’s action applied to affected titles in its own distribution catalog while Microsoft prepared updates. Availability can change as publishers release repaired builds, so players should follow the current notice for the specific product rather than infer its status from a general list.

What Steam and Valve changed

Unity says it contacted Valve and that Valve added protections to the Steam client. Those protections may reduce exploitation paths involving Steam’s launch behavior, but they are distinct from a title-level update.

There are three separate layers:

Layer What it can do What it cannot prove
Microsoft Defender Detect or block suspicious activity on Windows That the game’s Unity runtime has been repaired
Steam client protection Reduce certain exploitation paths involving Steam launching software That every Steam-distributed title is patched
Game update Replace the vulnerable runtime in that specific title That unrelated launchers, tools or dependencies are secure

Steam can deliver a publisher’s update, but it cannot independently rebuild a developer’s application. A title-by-title update remains the definitive fix for that title. SteamDB recorded a security update for Making it Home on October 4, 2025, citing the Unity vulnerability. SteamDB is an independent database and is not affiliated with Valve.

What developers should do

Preferred approach: rebuild the application

  1. Identify the Unity Editor branch used to build each released product, including launchers and bonus-content applications.
  2. Install the corresponding fixed Editor release. Unity’s Editor archive provides access to released versions.
  3. Open the project in the patched Editor and resolve any compatibility changes.
  4. Rebuild for every affected target: Android, Windows, Linux and macOS as applicable.
  5. Test normal launches, custom URI handlers, installers, patchers, save data, DRM, anti-cheat and platform-specific packaging.
  6. Sign and republish the repaired build through Steam, the Microsoft Store, Google Play, a direct-download channel or the relevant distributor.
  7. Tell players which build is fixed and whether an interim uninstall is necessary.

Rebuilding is Unity’s recommended method because it creates a clean release from patched runtime components and gives the development team an opportunity to update other dependencies. It may nevertheless require source access, reproducible build tooling, quality assurance, platform certification and store review.

Fallback approach: Unity Application Patcher

When source is unavailable or an emergency hotfix is needed, Unity provides an official Unity Application Patcher. Developers should read its license, usage guide and platform requirements before applying it.

The tool patches existing builds on supported platforms by modifying the Unity runtime:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Android: modifies libunity.so.
  • Windows: replaces UnityPlayer.dll.
  • macOS: replaces UnityPlayer.dylib.

The patched output must be tested, re-signed where required and republished. The tool applies to the specific build processed; future builds still need to be rebuilt or patched.

Binary patching can fail or become unsuitable when a build uses tamper-proofing, DRM, anti-cheat or hardened packaging. If the patcher cannot operate cleanly, rebuilding from source is the safer route. A successful binary patch also does not address other vulnerabilities in the game or its third-party dependencies.

Special cases developers should not miss

Old and abandoned games

Legacy projects may be the hardest to fix. Teams should determine whether the original source, build scripts, signing keys and platform accounts still exist; whether the project can migrate to a fixed Editor; whether a binary patch remains compatible with its protections; and whether temporary removal from distribution is safer than shipping an unverified build.

Games outside Steam

Steam protections do not cover direct downloads, alternative PC stores or every launcher. Developers distributing elsewhere must patch and republish through each channel. Players should not assume that a title is covered merely because another version of the game is sold on Steam.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Android signing and store delivery

An Android binary patch still has to pass the normal signing and distribution process. Replacing native libraries can affect package validation, store submission and compatibility. Developers should test the complete signed artifact, not only a local patched copy.

Linux

Unity describes Linux as lower risk than the other named affected platforms and does not provide the same patcher workflow. The recommended action remains updating the project to a fixed Editor and rebuilding where possible.

macOS security configuration

Hardened Runtime, App Sandbox and signing configuration affect how a macOS application behaves and therefore influence exploitability and patching compatibility. They reduce some attack paths but are not a reason to skip Unity’s recommended update.

Launchers and companion software

Audit every executable shipped with a game. A digital artbook, mod tool, configuration utility, crash reporter or companion app may use Unity independently from the main game. The security review must cover the entire installed product, not only the executable that renders gameplay.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When should a player uninstall a game?

Uninstalling is warranted when the publisher or platform explicitly tells users to do so, when a title has been temporarily withdrawn pending a fix, or when a security team has confirmed that the local installation is affected and cannot be isolated safely.

Otherwise, uninstalling every Unity game is disproportionate. Install available updates, keep endpoint protection active, avoid suspicious files and monitor the publisher’s announcement. If a game is abandoned and cannot receive a fix, players who do not need it can remove it as a precaution—particularly if it registers a custom Windows URI scheme or is routinely launched with elevated privileges.

What this incident does—and does not—mean

  • “All Unity games are hacked” is incorrect. The affected range is broad, but Unity says it found no evidence of exploitation or customer impact, and exposure depends on platform and configuration.
  • “Steam fixed every vulnerable game” is incorrect. Client protection and title-level remediation are different things.
  • “Defender patched the game” is incorrect. Defender can detect or block suspicious activity; it does not replace the game’s Unity runtime.
  • “Updating Unity Hub fixes released games” is incorrect. Existing binaries need a new build or the official patcher.
  • “The patcher is universal” is incorrect. Anti-cheat, DRM, tamper protection and hardened packaging can prevent safe use.
  • “Microsoft delisted every Unity game” is incorrect. Microsoft temporarily removed some affected titles from its own catalog while preparing patches.

The useful distinction is between three states: a game may be not known to be exploited, partly mitigated by Defender or Steam, or rebuilt with a patched Unity runtime. Only the third describes a title-level repair.
