For Global Accessibility Awareness Day on May 21, 2026, Xbox announced a more secure attachment design and a new Goal Post shape for its Adaptive Thumbstick Toppers, plus accessibility features highlighted in Forza Horizon 6, Kiln and Sea of Thieves. The topper design file is free to download through Xbox Design Lab; making a physical topper requires a 3D printer or printing service.
What changed with Xbox Adaptive Thumbstick Toppers?
Xbox says player feedback led it to improve the toppers’ attachment so they better withstand higher force and stay securely in place during gameplay. Kaitlyn Jones, Gaming Accessibility Lead, Hardware and Platform at Xbox, described the change this way: “Based on player feedback, we’ve improved the attachment design so the toppers better endure higher force use and stay securely in place during gameplay.”
The announcement also adds the requested Goal Post shape. Xbox lists seven shapes in total. Players can choose a controller in Xbox Design Lab, select a shape, and customize its width and height before downloading a printable file.
How do you get a physical topper?
Downloading the file and obtaining a finished topper are separate steps. Xbox says the file is free and a controller purchase is not required to download it. To turn it into a physical part, you need access to a 3D printer or a 3D printing service.

|---|---|---|
| Print at home | Access to a 3D printer | You can make the part yourself, but must have or obtain printer access. |
| Use a printing service | A service that can print the downloaded file | You avoid owning a printer; Xbox’s announcement does not state service prices or recommend a provider. |
The announcement does not specify printer models, materials, print settings, or a complete compatibility list for controllers and topper shapes. It pictures the Xbox Adaptive Joystick with the Goal Post topper, but that image is not a universal compatibility guarantee.
Accessibility features highlighted in Xbox games
Forza Horizon 6
Xbox highlighted AutoDrive via ANNA using the D-pad, Proximity Radar and High Contrast Mode. It also described a post-launch update intended to add American Sign Language (ASL) and British Sign Language (BSL) for cinematics. The May 21, 2026 announcement does not establish whether that update has since shipped.

Kiln
Xbox listed flexible text settings, visual accessibility options and remappable controls, among other features.
Sea of Thieves
Xbox pointed to accessibility work in Sea of Thieves including control remapping and Audio Aim Assist. It also highlighted Custom Text Overlay for Challenge Parchment, building on earlier work with Riddle Maps. Xbox said in its 2026 announcement that more than 50% of the game’s 100+ updates included accessibility improvements; that is Xbox’s characterization of its update history.

Why Xbox ties the announcement to accessibility
The hardware and game examples address different needs: a customizable physical attachment can change how a player interacts with a control, while in-game settings and features can adjust visual, text, audio or control experiences. The announcement presents them together as parts of Xbox’s accessibility work rather than as one interchangeable solution.
In its 2025 GAAD announcement, Xbox cited nearly 450 million players with some form of disability. That figure is attributed here to Xbox and 2025; its underlying source is not independently established in the cited announcement. Xbox’s 2024 coverage also described ByoWave Proteus as a separate modular adaptive controller and reported more than 100 million possible configurations. That is historical product context, not a claim about the topper update or current product availability.
