If an Xbox Play Anywhere game asks you to buy it again, will not appear on your PC, or has missing progress, check three things separately: whether that exact game supports Play Anywhere, whether the device is signed in to the account with access, and whether the previous game session finished syncing. Xbox purchases do not automatically include a Windows version for every title.
First, check that the exact game supports Play Anywhere
Play Anywhere applies to participating digital games, not every game you own on Xbox. Check the game’s listing or Xbox’s Xbox Play Anywhere supported-games information for the specific title. Xbox reported more than 1,000 supported games on January 21, 2026, but that program-wide count does not establish that a particular game is included.

If the title is not supported, owning it on console does not establish a Play Anywhere entitlement on Windows. A separate PC edition or purchase may be required; confirm the title’s current listing rather than assuming the Xbox version includes it.
If the other device says “Buy” or does not recognize ownership
Confirm the account and how you access the game
Check which Microsoft/Xbox account is signed in on the device showing the prompt. The account should be the one associated with the digital purchase or the applicable subscription access. Microsoft’s digital goods usage rules describe both user-based and device-based licenses, so seeing a game on one device does not prove the other device is using the account with the relevant entitlement.

If you access the game through a subscription rather than owning it outright, verify that the signed-in account currently has the needed subscription entitlement. Subscription access is not the same as a permanent purchase.
Xbox’s historical guidance says to use the same Microsoft account on both platforms. That article dates to 2016, so use it for the same-account principle, not as a current statement of device coverage; check the current program information for supported devices and games.

If the game is missing from the install list
On Xbox
Open My Games and Apps > Ready to Install and look for the supported title. This path applies to eligible owned games; it does not make every Xbox purchase installable on PC.
On Windows PC
Check the Microsoft Store library or owned-games section, and confirm that the Microsoft Store and Xbox app are signed in to the account with the entitlement. Microsoft Support’s app or game installation guidance points Xbox One users to Ready to Install and PC users to Microsoft Store to find owned games. If the game is missing from one location, revisit title eligibility and account access before treating it as an installation fault. For Xbox console game installation problems, Microsoft directs users to Xbox Support.

If your progress did not sync between devices
Check account, connection, and save status
Start the game on each device with the same Xbox account/gamertag and a working Xbox network connection. Xbox describes Play Anywhere progress as saved with the gamertag so it can be resumed on another device. Microsoft’s XR-052 save-roaming policy specifies that roaming depends on the title’s identity and Xbox network sign-in. In practical terms, cross-device progress also depends on the game implementing the required save behavior.
Let the first device finish saving and cloud synchronization before launching the game elsewhere. Xbox announced a Game Save Sync Indicator rollout for PC and handhelds on January 21, 2026. If the indicator is available in your game/device experience, check it before switching; availability may depend on rollout state. Xbox’s announcement also described expanding Play Anywhere support to Arm-based PCs and reported the program’s game count as of that date.

If a save is still reported as syncing or unresolved, avoid starting another session or overwriting local or cloud progress until the status clears. There is no single player-side repair sequence established for every title and sync fault.

After checking account, network, and sync status, contact the game’s support channel or Xbox Support as appropriate. Include the title, the platforms and game builds involved, the account/gamertag (never share your password), the approximate time of the last successful save, and any exact error text. Do not delete local saves as a generic first step.

What the save-roaming rule means for players
Microsoft’s XR-052 documentation is written for developers, but it helps explain why Play Anywhere does not guarantee identical behavior in every game. It requires roaming for games using the same TitleID across platforms, devices, or console generations when the user is signed into Xbox network; Windows PC games using the same TitleID must roam saves between PCs. Microsoft’s developer page says games using XGameSaveFiles or another XR-052-compliant solution with the same TitleID and Xbox User ID can support cross-progression. Those requirements describe how a game must be built; they do not provide a universal player control to repair a stalled save.
