In October 2023, Microsoft raised the suggested retail price of the 500GB Xbox Series S in Brazil to R$3,599. The increase made the console’s lower-cost entry point considerably more expensive for Brazilian buyers, and the company’s own executive acknowledged that consoles are luxury items there. That is a strong affordability argument for calling the change anti-consumer. The legal argument is narrower: Brazil’s consumer code bans unjustified price increases, but the reporting available does not show that a regulator or court ruled this particular increase unlawful.
What changed in Brazil
Microsoft’s suggested price for the 500GB Xbox Series S moved from a previous figure to R$3,599. Tecnoblog reported that the company would update the console to the new suggested price “in the coming weeks,” and that the change applied to the value shown for the 500GB model. The reports do not establish the exact date each retailer applied the new price, so treat October 2023 as the announcement window rather than a precise switch-over date.

The two main reports used different starting prices, which produces two different percentages for the same new price:
| Report | Prior price used | New suggested price | Percentage stated | Year |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tecnoblog | R$2,999 | R$3,599 | About 20% | 2023 |
| Folha | R$2,649 | R$3,599 | 36% | 2023 |
Both calculations are arithmetically correct for their own baseline. The 20% figure measures the rise from R$2,999, and the 36% figure measures the rise from R$2,649. If you cite the increase, name the starting price with it. Neither figure is a more accurate “true” increase; they describe different prior prices.

Microsoft’s stated reason
In an interview with Folha, Phil Spencer, then CEO of Xbox, attributed the change to Brazil’s import taxes on electronics and to the economics of the local business. Translated from Portuguese, his reported statements were that the import tax situation for electronics in Brazil is “very difficult,” and that when the company assessed the viability of its business in the Brazilian market, it “needed to raise the price.” He also said that consoles in general are luxury items, “with or without price increases.”
Microsoft’s press communication, as quoted by Tecnoblog, said the company would update the Series S to the suggested price of R$3,599 and would keep offering games, value and options for players in Brazil. That statement describes the decision but does not itemise costs.
Folha also reported Spencer saying that the amount Microsoft received per console in Brazil, excluding retail margin and taxes, was the lowest in the world. That is an executive’s claim. Reporting does not show Microsoft’s internal figures, and the statement should be attributed to Spencer rather than presented as a verified global comparison.

Why the affordability argument has force
The Series S is Xbox’s lowest-cost current console, so its price matters more than the higher-end model’s price for buyers who are entering the platform for the first time. A price increase on the cheapest console changes who can afford to buy in at all. That is the core of the “anti-consumer” critique: the company’s own explanation confirms that the market is price-sensitive and that consoles are discretionary purchases there, and the increase raised the cost of the most accessible option.
The critique does not require proving bad faith. It is a judgment that a price rise on an entry-level device, in a market the company itself describes as hard to serve, lands hardest on the buyers least able to absorb it. Readers can accept the affordability concern while still recognising that the company’s import-cost explanation is a real business factor it has stated publicly.
What Brazil’s consumer law says, and what it does not
The official consolidated text of Brazil’s Consumer Defense Code (Lei nº 8.078/1990) lists two relevant abusive practices. Article 39, V covers demanding a manifestly excessive advantage. Article 39, X covers raising the price of products or services without just cause. Those clauses are the legal lens most commentators would apply to a price rise like this one.

The clauses do not settle the question on their own. Applying them requires showing that a particular increase lacked just cause, and the reporting reviewed here does not include any regulator finding or court decision about Microsoft’s 2023 Series S change. “Anti-consumer” is therefore best read as an editorial judgment about affordability. A legal conclusion would need a specific case record that does not appear in the available coverage.
What the 2025 price survey does and does not show
Procon Mato Grosso do Sul published an online price survey on October 10, 2025. Its staff collected prices on October 8, 2025 from six online companies for the PlayStation 5 Slim, the Xbox Series S and the Nintendo Switch. For the Xbox Series S, the survey recorded a range of R$2,686.30 to R$4,241.99, which the agency described as a 57.91% variation.
That survey is a dated snapshot of seller prices from one day in 2025. It is not a current price, and it is not the official suggested price set in 2023. It is useful for one point: the spread between sellers can be wider than the change Microsoft announced. The agency also advised consumers to check warranty and exchange policies and to avoid purchase links sent through social networks or messaging apps because of fraud risk.

How to judge a price today
Because the 2023 suggested price is historical and the 2025 survey is a single snapshot, anyone comparing Series S prices in Brazil today needs to check current listings directly. The following points matter more than the headline figure:
- Total out-of-pocket price in BRL. Include any shipping, import charges, or fees the seller adds at checkout.
- Storage model. The 2023 reports refer to the 500GB model. Do not assume that figure applies to other storage configurations.
- Official suggested price versus a retailer’s sale price. A discounted listing is not evidence of a new suggested price, and a suggested price is not what most shoppers pay.
- Seller and warranty. Confirm the warranty terms and the store’s exchange policy before paying.
- New versus used condition. Used units should be priced separately from new ones.
- Link source. Buy from the seller’s own store or a marketplace page you reached yourself, not from a link sent in a chat or social post.
Verdict
The 2023 increase to R$3,599 for the 500GB Series S was a large rise on Xbox’s entry-level console in Brazil, and Microsoft’s explanation, given by Phil Spencer, centres on import taxes and business viability. The affordability critique is well grounded in that explanation. The legal claim is not established by the coverage available: Brazil’s consumer code prohibits unjustified price increases, but no regulator or court ruling on this increase has been reported. The fair description is that the change was harsh for buyers and the company defended it on cost grounds that remain unverified from outside.
