Buy the Xbox Series X|S Storage Expansion Card if you want to play Series X|S-optimized games directly from added storage. Choose a USB 3.1 external drive if you mainly want extra space for a game library, to play backward-compatible titles, or to move games between drives. Xbox’s comparison says optimized games cannot be played from USB storage, while the card is designed to match the internal SSD’s performance.
How the two options compare
| What you want to do | Storage Expansion Card | USB 3.1 external HDD or SSD |
|---|---|---|
| Play Series X|S-optimized games directly from added storage | Yes | No |
| Play Xbox One, Xbox 360, and Original Xbox games | Yes | Yes |
| Store games and move or copy them between storage devices | Yes | Yes |
| Performance compared with the internal SSD | Designed to match internal SSD performance | Does not replicate internal SSD performance |
| Best fit | Direct-play expansion for optimized games | Game library, backward-compatible play, and transfers |
This is Xbox’s published compatibility and capability comparison, not an independent speed test. Xbox lists 2.4 GB/s raw internal SSD I/O throughput as a console architecture specification; it is not a benchmark for USB drives. Xbox Wire’s storage primer explains the distinction.
When to buy the Storage Expansion Card
Choose the proprietary Xbox Series X|S Storage Expansion Card when you want added storage that can run optimized games directly. Microsoft says it is designed to match internal storage performance, and its compatibility comparison marks optimized games as playable from the card. It works with Xbox Series S. Microsoft’s Seagate Storage Expansion Card page lists 1 TB and 2 TB options; availability can vary by market.
The 2020 Xbox Wire primer quotes Jason Ronald, Director of Program Management, describing the card as designed to match the exact performance of the internal storage. That makes the card the straightforward choice if your priority is installing and playing optimized titles without shuffling them off USB storage.

When a USB external drive makes more sense
A USB 3.1 external HDD or SSD is useful when you want a larger game library connected to the console, primarily play Xbox One or earlier-generation titles, or want to move games between storage devices. Xbox says USB storage can store any Xbox game and play Xbox One, Xbox 360, and Original Xbox games. USB storage cannot directly run Series X|S-optimized games.
You can keep an optimized game on USB and move or copy it to the console’s internal storage or the Expansion Card when you want to play it. This makes USB a practical library or transfer drive, but not a substitute for the card when direct play of optimized games is the goal. Xbox describes these transfer options in its storage primer.

Check your Series S capacity and card options
Microsoft’s current Series S product page lists console configurations with 512 GB or 1 TB of internal storage. Those are stated capacities, not a guarantee of how much space remains available for games after system use. The page also lists three USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports and support for USB external HDDs and Storage Expansion Cards. Check the Series S product page for the configurations currently listed in your market.
Microsoft’s accessory page lists 1 TB and 2 TB Expansion Card options, while its console page describes support for 1 TB cards. Product options and availability may differ by market, so check the local listing before buying.
