Choose Xbox Series X if native 4K output, physical games, UHD Blu-ray playback or a larger listed storage tier is important. Choose Xbox Series S if you want a digital-only console built around 1440p output and can accept its smaller capacity options. Both consoles support the same Xbox ecosystem features, including Quick Resume, Smart Delivery, backward compatibility, HDMI 2.1 display features and frame rates of up to 120 FPS when a game and display support them.

This comparison uses Microsoft Xbox’s current US product and comparison information accessed in October 2026. Prices, stock and the exact model lineup vary by market, so verify the edition sold in your country before ordering.

What is the real performance difference?

Resolution: 1440p design versus native 4K

Microsoft positions Series S as a 1440p console that can upscale its output to 4K. Upscaling can send a 4K signal to a television, but it does not make a game render every image at native 4K. Series X is specified for native, or true, 4K gaming. That distinction matters most on a large 4K screen, where a title rendered at a lower internal resolution can look softer than a title rendered natively.

Neither description means every Series X game runs at native 4K, nor that every Series S game renders at exactly 1440p. Developers can choose dynamic resolution, a quality mode, a performance mode or other compromises. If one particular game is the reason for your purchase, check that game’s current Series S and Series X support rather than relying only on the console’s headline target.

Graphics hardware and the limits of the published figures

Microsoft’s 2026 Series X technical specification lists GPU processing power of 12 TFLOPS. That is a manufacturer hardware specification, not an independent benchmark or a promise of a fixed advantage in every game. The official material reviewed for Series S does not expose a complete processor specification that would justify a calculated percentage gap, so no responsible comparison can turn the published figures into a universal performance multiplier.

In practical terms, Series X has more headroom for higher-resolution rendering and demanding visual settings, while Series S is engineered around a lower rendering target. The exact difference depends on the game engine, its patches and the mode selected in the game.

Frame rates up to 120 FPS

Both families advertise performance of up to 120 frames per second. Microsoft qualifies that ceiling: the game must support the mode and the attached display must be capable of showing it. A console does not convert a 30-FPS title into a 120-FPS title, and a 120-Hz television alone cannot make unsupported software run at 120 FPS.

When comparing a title, look for its current performance-mode notes and display requirements. Updates can alter resolution or frame-rate options, so an old launch specification may no longer describe the current build.

Can Xbox Series S play discs?

No. Series S is digital-only and has no optical drive. Games must be obtained through a digital purchase, a compatible subscription or another digital entitlement tied to your account. A physical Xbox disc cannot be inserted, authenticated or used to install a game on Series S.

This also affects backward compatibility. Xbox describes Series S as compatible with thousands of games across four generations, but that catalog support applies to digital entitlements. A disc you own is not a digital license simply because the same title appears in the store; you would need a digital entitlement to play it on Series S.

Does Xbox Series X come in an all-digital version?

Yes. Microsoft lists Series X editions with an optical drive and also an all-digital Series X edition. The drive-equipped models are the relevant choice for physical Xbox games and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs. An all-digital Series X keeps the Series X performance target but cannot read discs, so check the exact product listing, storage capacity and drive description for your region.

Edition names and availability can differ between countries and retailers. Do not assume that a Series X shown in a photograph includes a drive or that every listed storage tier is sold in every market.

How much storage do Series S and Series X have?

Microsoft lists Series S with either a 512GB SSD or a 1TB SSD. Series X is listed with either a 1TB SSD or a 2TB SSD, depending on the edition. These are configuration capacities, not a statement of how much free space remains after the operating system and updates are installed.

The capacity question is especially important on Series S because every installed game is digital. Large modern games and their updates can consume substantial space, and installation sizes vary by title. Do not plan a library around a fixed number of games per drive; check the current requirements for the games you actually play.

Using expansion storage

Both consoles support the Xbox Series X|S Storage Expansion Card. Microsoft describes this dedicated card as providing added storage at the performance level of the internal SSD, making it the explicitly supported choice for storing and playing Series X|S-optimized games without treating a generic USB drive as an equivalent.

Microsoft also lists USB 3.1 external hard-drive support. A USB hard drive is useful for storing compatible games and moving installations, but it should not be presented as identical to the dedicated expansion card for running newer optimized titles. Expansion is optional; choose it after considering your installed library, download habits and the capacity of the specific console edition.

Which features do both consoles share?

Quick Resume

Quick Resume lets supported games remain in a suspended state so you can switch among multiple titles and return to play more quickly. Microsoft presents it as a shared Series X|S capability. The number of games that remain resumable is not a fixed promise: memory use, game design and system behavior can change which titles are retained.

Smart Delivery

Eligible Smart Delivery purchases provide the appropriate version for the Xbox console on which you play. It is a platform feature shared by Series S and Series X, not an assurance that every game includes a special upgrade or identical visual settings on both machines. Confirm a title’s own support details before buying it for a particular mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Backward compatibility across Xbox generations

Both consoles support many games from earlier Xbox generations, subject to the current compatibility catalog and each game’s licensing rules. Series X can use eligible physical backward-compatible titles on a drive-equipped edition; Microsoft notes that the disc must remain inserted when you play an installed disc-based game. The all-digital Series X and every Series S require a digital entitlement.

Controllers and other accessories

Microsoft says Series X|S works with most Xbox One controllers and gaming accessories. “Most” is deliberate: compatibility is not a guarantee for every legacy accessory or specialized device. Check the accessory’s support information if carrying over a particular wheel, headset, adapter or other peripheral is part of your decision.

Video, display and entertainment capabilities

Microsoft’s comparison information lists HDMI 2.1 output, Variable Refresh Rate, Auto Low-Latency Mode and Dolby Vision gaming for the Series X|S family. These features only operate when the console, game and display support the relevant standard. A television with an HDMI 2.1 port does not automatically provide every mode if its panel or firmware lacks it.

The console does not bundle a subscription to every service shown on its entertainment pages. Treat any subscription, including Game Pass options mentioned by Xbox, as a separate purchase whose tier names, benefits, price and regional availability should be checked at the time you subscribe.

Choosing the right edition for your game library

Pick a drive-equipped Series X when physical media matters

  • You already own a physical Xbox collection and want to continue using eligible discs.
  • You buy used or borrowed physical games and want the option to install them.
  • You want a UHD Blu-ray Disc player as part of the console.
  • You have a 4K display and prioritize the Series X native-4K target.

The disc drive is an edition-specific feature, so confirm it in the listing rather than inferring it from the Series X name alone.

Pick an all-digital Series X when you want Series X performance without discs

An all-digital Series X suits a player who wants the Series X resolution target and its available storage options but has no physical library or UHD Blu-ray requirement. It still depends entirely on digital access, so compare the edition’s capacity and the way you buy games before choosing it over a drive-equipped model.

Pick Series S 1TB for a digital library with more breathing room

The 1TB Series S is the more comfortable Series S configuration for a player who accepts digital-only ownership but wants more internal space than the 512GB model. It remains a 1440p-target console; the larger drive does not change its graphics target.

Pick Series S 512GB only when its capacity fits your habits

The 512GB model can make sense for a smaller rotating library, frequent uninstalling and reinstalling, or a player who intends to add storage later. Before buying, inspect the install sizes and update patterns of your regular games and include the possible cost of expansion in your ownership plan.

A practical decision process

  1. Identify your display. If native 4K rendering is a stated priority, put Series X at the top of the list. If you use a 1440p monitor or are comfortable with upscaled 4K output, Series S may meet the display requirement.
  2. Audit your media. Decide whether you need physical Xbox games or UHD Blu-ray discs. If the answer is yes, select a Series X edition that explicitly includes a drive.
  3. Check the exact games. Look up current Series S and Series X modes for the titles you play most. Do not infer a guaranteed 120-FPS mode from the console’s “up to 120 FPS” specification.
  4. Choose capacity. Match 512GB or 1TB on Series S, and 1TB or 2TB on Series X, to your download and retention habits. Remember that listed capacity is not the same as free space after system software.
  5. Budget the complete setup. Include optional expansion storage, any separately purchased subscription and a display capable of the modes you want. Current prices and promotions are market- and retailer-specific.
  6. Verify the regional listing. Confirm the drive, storage tier, included accessories and availability for your country before placing the order.

Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them

Confusing a 4K signal with native 4K rendering

Series S can upscale to 4K, but that is different from rendering a game natively at 4K. Ask whether a game’s internal resolution and mode meet your expectations, especially on a large screen.

Treating 120 FPS as a universal result

“Up to 120 FPS” is a conditional ceiling shared by both consoles. The software must offer the mode, and the display must support it. A title may instead run at a lower frame rate or use a different resolution-quality balance.

Buying the wrong Series X edition

Some Series X listings include a drive and an all-digital edition is also listed. Read the specification panel for optical-drive presence and storage capacity; do not rely only on the product family name.

Assuming a USB hard drive equals the expansion card

Both consoles list USB 3.1 external HDD support, but Microsoft specifically describes the Series X|S Storage Expansion Card as matching internal SSD performance. Use the dedicated card when you need the intended high-speed storage path for optimized games.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Estimating library size from the drive label

Game installation sizes and updates change. A 512GB, 1TB or 2TB label cannot be converted into a dependable game count without examining the particular titles in your library.

Price, availability and ownership cost

Current retail prices, sale discounts, stock and regional model lineups are not stable specifications. Microsoft notes that pricing and availability vary by retailer and market. For that reason, a price-based winner cannot be declared from the product capabilities alone.

Compare the total cost of the edition that actually meets your needs: console capacity, a required expansion card, any subscription you choose, and a display capable of the selected resolution or refresh mode. A lower purchase price can be offset if you immediately need additional storage or cannot use a physical collection on a digital-only model.

Which Xbox should you buy?

Buy a drive-equipped Xbox Series X for native-4K ambitions, physical games, UHD Blu-ray playback or the broadest storage choice. Buy the all-digital Series X when you want that performance target and capacity options but have no use for discs. Buy Xbox Series S when digital-only gaming and a 1440p design target fit your display and library; select 1TB when capacity matters more than the smaller configuration.

For a decision based primarily on one game’s resolution or frame rate, let that game’s current support page decide. The consoles share the same core platform features and a 120-FPS ceiling, but their rendering targets, storage configurations and disc support are different enough that the right choice depends on those concrete requirements.
