Yes—PS5 players can play with Xbox friends when the specific game supports cross-play between those platforms and everyone meets its requirements. A game being available on both consoles, or having online multiplayer, does not by itself mean its players can join each other. Check the game’s official support information for its supported platforms, versions, modes and account requirements.
What to check before trying to play together
- Confirm the exact game supports PS5-to-Xbox cross-play. Look for an explicit statement that PlayStation and Xbox players can play together; “online multiplayer” alone is not enough. Cross-play support is set by each game and can change with updates. EA’s EA SPORTS FC cross-play information is one example of title-specific rules.
- Match the console generation and game version. Some games split players into generation-specific pools. In EA SPORTS FC, EA says PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC are in the current-generation cross-play pool, while PS4 and Xbox One are in the older-generation pool. The Switch versions do not support FC cross-play. These rules apply to EA SPORTS FC, not to every game.
- Check whether cross-play is available in the mode you want. Support may cover only selected modes. For example, EA’s Madden NFL 26 FAQ lists cross-play for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S in online Head-to-Head, Franchise, Madden Ultimate Team, Superstar KO and Superstar Showdown.
- Find out whether accounts must be linked and how friends are searched. Minecraft on PlayStation requires linking a Microsoft account to the PSN account to play with friends on other platforms or use Realms. Madden NFL 26 uses EA Connect: players can search for an EA ID or platform identifier.
- Check both players’ cross-play settings. In Fortnite on PlayStation, open Settings > Account and Privacy > Gameplay Privacy and set Allow Cross Platform Play to Yes. Epic warns that turning it off can leave some modes playable only in Solo. Xbox players should check Xbox’s cross-network settings.
- Check online-service requirements and use the game’s invite flow. Some online multiplayer games require PlayStation Plus. PlayStation also notes that invitations and joining can work differently from game to game, so a PS5 system invite does not create cross-play if the title does not support it.

These examples are not a complete catalog. Use the game’s current official support page to verify its rules, since availability can vary by mode, generation and updates.
How to invite an Xbox friend from PS5
Once you confirm the game supports cross-play, follow that title’s own friend-search or invite process. Some games use a publisher account or in-game player ID rather than a PSN friend list. For instance, Madden NFL 26 uses EA Connect Player Search to look up an EA ID or platform identifier. Minecraft requires the linked Microsoft account for cross-platform play.
PS5 supports game group joins and invites, but PlayStation says the method can differ by game. If an invite does not work, check the title’s instructions, account links, cross-play settings, game versions and the selected mode. A system-level invitation cannot put players into a cross-platform match that the game does not provide.

Why can’t my PS5 and Xbox friend join the same game?
- The title does not support cross-play between PS5 and Xbox. Multiplayer support does not guarantee cross-platform matchmaking.
- You are on incompatible game generations or versions. Some titles maintain separate pools, as EA SPORTS FC does between current- and older-generation consoles.
- The mode is not cross-play enabled. Check the game’s list of supported multiplayer modes.
- A required account is missing or not linked. Minecraft on PlayStation requires a Microsoft account link; other games may use their own account and friend-search systems.
- Cross-play is disabled. Review the in-game or platform cross-play settings, including Fortnite’s PlayStation setting.
- You are using the wrong invite method or lack an online service requirement. Try the game’s own invite flow and confirm whether the game requires PlayStation Plus.
Frequently used terms
Cross-play means players on different platforms can play together in a supported game. It does not necessarily include every console generation or game mode. Cross-progression—carrying progress between platforms—is a separate feature and should not be assumed from cross-play support.
