Both Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S are listed for Grand Theft Auto VI, which Rockstar currently says is coming November 19, 2026. Choose Series X if you want Xbox’s true-4K positioning, a disc drive for other games or UHD Blu-ray, or a higher-capacity model. Choose Series S if you want a disc-free console built around 1440p output and prefer the lower-tier system. Neither choice is a proven GTA 6 performance winner: official sources do not specify the game’s resolution, frame rate, or graphics settings on either console.
Can Xbox Series S play GTA 6?
Yes. Rockstar lists Grand Theft Auto VI for Xbox Series X|S and gives November 19, 2026 as its current release date on the official game page. That confirms support for both consoles, but not how the game will look or run on either one.
What is actually different between Series X and Series S?
Xbox describes the consoles with different general display targets and configurations. Those are console-level specifications, not GTA 6-specific guarantees.
| Feature | Xbox Series X | Xbox Series S |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox-listed display positioning | True 4K | 1440p; Xbox says it can upscale to 4K |
| GPU specification | 12 TFLOPS, 52 CUs at 1.825 GHz | 4 TFLOPS, 20 CUs at 1.565 GHz |
| Disc drive | 4K UHD Blu-ray drive on the cited disc-equipped configuration | No optical drive |
| Storage examples on Xbox’s comparison page | 1TB disc-drive configuration; other capacities are also listed | 512GB configuration; other capacities are also listed |
Specifications are from Xbox’s console comparison page, Series X page, and Series S page. The comparison page lists multiple capacities for both product families, so check the exact model rather than assuming every Series X or Series S has the same storage.

Is GTA 6 better on Series X or Series S?
There is no substantiated GTA 6-specific performance verdict yet. The official pages establish platform support and describe the consoles, but do not state the game’s Xbox resolution, frame rate, graphics settings, or comparative performance. Series X’s higher general specifications and 4K positioning do not prove how GTA 6 will perform; likewise, Series S support does not establish its final image quality or frame rate.
So if your deciding question is “Which one gives me the best GTA 6 frame rate or image quality?”, the available official information does not establish an answer. Treat any claimed head-to-head GTA 6 result as unverified unless it comes from credible game-specific testing.

Which console makes more sense for your setup?
Choose Series X if you value 4K positioning or a disc drive
- You want the console Xbox positions for true 4K gaming.
- You have disc-based Xbox games or want a UHD Blu-ray player. The cited Series X configuration includes a 4K UHD Blu-ray drive; check the exact model when buying.
- You want to compare higher built-in storage configurations. Xbox lists multiple capacities, so verify the model’s capacity and price.
Choose Series S if you want a disc-free, 1440p-targeted console
- You buy and play games digitally and do not need an optical drive.
- You are comfortable with Xbox’s 1440p positioning and its stated ability to upscale to 4K.
- You want the lower-tier console rather than Series X. Xbox notes that prices and availability vary, so compare current local offers for the exact models.
Compare storage based on the specific model
The Xbox comparison page shows a 1TB Series X disc-drive model and a 512GB Series S model, while the product families include other capacities. If built-in space matters, compare the capacity of the actual consoles on sale. Xbox also offers a Series X|S storage expansion card separately; it adds storage at the same performance as the console’s custom SSD. No GTA 6 install size is established in the cited official material, so there is no basis here to say a particular card is required.

No. Rockstar’s support article says the physical GTA 6 version is a download code in a box, not a game disc. The code is used to download the game, so Series X’s disc drive is not needed for that edition. The drive may still be useful for other disc-based games or UHD Blu-ray. Rockstar also says digital pre-loading is scheduled for November 12, 2026; check its platforms, editions, and versions support page for current edition and timing details.
