Xbox Series X is the better-performing console; Xbox Series S is the smaller, cheaper, digital-only alternative. Choose Series X for a 4K display, physical games, stronger graphics, more storage, and longer-term performance headroom. Choose Series S for a compact setup, a 1080p or 1440p display, and primarily digital or Game Pass gaming.

The consoles share the same Xbox ecosystem, SSD-based architecture, backward-compatibility framework, and current-generation platform. They do not deliver identical visuals or performance: Series S has substantially less GPU power and memory, so developers may reduce resolution, textures, ray tracing, shadows, or frame-rate targets.

The biggest difference is graphics performance

Series X has roughly three times the GPU compute performance of Series S: approximately 12 versus 4 TFLOPS. It also has 16GB of GDDR6 memory instead of 10GB, along with substantially greater memory bandwidth. That additional budget gives Series X more room for higher resolutions, sharper textures, longer draw distances, more demanding ray tracing, and steadier performance.

#1 Best Overall
Xbox Series X | Disc Gaming Console | 1TB SSD
  • FASTEST, MOST POWERFUL XBOX — Experience next-generation performance with 12 teraflops of processing power, delivering smoother gameplay, richer worlds, and faster responsiveness than any previous XBOX.
  • TRUE 4K GAMING UP TO 120 FPS — Enjoy breathtaking visuals with true 4K resolution, HDR, and frame rates up to 120 FPS, plus hardware-accelerated ray tracing for a heightened level of realism.
  • 1TB CUSTOM SSD AND XBOX VELOCITY ARCHITECTURE — Reduce load times dramatically with the custom 1TB NVMe SSD and XBOX Velocity Architecture, enabling lightning-fast performance and seamless world streaming.
  • QUICK RESUME — Seamlessly switch between multiple games and resume exactly where you left off. No more waiting through title screens and loading bars.
  • FOUR GENERATIONS OF GAMES — Play thousands of games from XBOX Series X|S, XBOX One, XBOX 360, and Original XBOX, with many titles enhanced for better visuals and performance on XBOX Series X.

Series S is therefore not simply a Series X rendering at a smaller resolution. Developers may need to lower texture quality, shadow detail, crowd density, visual effects, or ray-tracing quality. Some games offer different quality and performance modes on each console, while others may target different frame rates or resolutions.

Both consoles use an eight-core custom AMD Zen 2 CPU, although Series X has a slightly higher maximum clock speed. The CPU difference is much less important than the GPU and memory gap for most graphics-heavy games.

Resolution and frame rates in real games

Series X is designed for games targeting up to native 4K. Series S is designed around 1440p gaming and can output to a 4K television, including through upscaling. Neither console renders every game at one fixed resolution.

Modern console games commonly use dynamic resolution scaling. A game might lower its internal resolution during demanding scenes, offer a 30fps quality mode, or provide a 60fps performance mode with reduced image quality. A 120Hz television does not make every game run at 120fps: the game, console settings, display, HDMI connection, and selected graphics mode all matter.

Series X is more likely to maintain higher-resolution 60fps modes and has greater headroom for demanding 120fps or ray-traced modes. Series S can support high-refresh-rate features in compatible games, but usually with lower resolution or other compromises. Treat “4K” and “120fps” as game-specific claims, not automatic console guarantees.

Does Series S play the same games?

Generally, both consoles belong to the Xbox Series X|S generation and access the same broad Xbox platform. Supported games can also use Smart Delivery to provide the appropriate version, and both consoles share Xbox backward-compatibility support for titles on Microsoft’s compatibility list.

“The same games” does not mean identical versions. Developers choose each console’s resolution, visual settings, performance modes, and feature set. Series S may have reduced effects or fewer graphics options. Future games may also place greater pressure on its smaller memory pool, so it is not safe to promise that every future Series X title will support Series S forever or with equivalent features.

Disc drive versus digital-only ownership

The standard 1TB Xbox Series X includes a UHD Blu-ray drive. That makes it the practical choice if you own Xbox One, Xbox 360, or original Xbox discs that are supported by backward compatibility, buy used games, borrow or lend physical games, collect boxed releases, or watch UHD Blu-ray films.

Series S has no disc drive. An Xbox game disc cannot be used as proof of ownership on it; games must be purchased digitally, downloaded through a subscription, or streamed where supported. Microsoft also sells digital Series X configurations, so check the exact model rather than assuming every Series X has a drive.

Digital-only ownership can be convenient, especially for Game Pass users, but it ties your library to digital-store availability and digital pricing. Physical games can sometimes be borrowed or bought used, which may make a disc-equipped console cheaper over several years even when its initial price is higher.

Storage: 512GB is the important warning

Current configurations include 512GB and 1TB Series S models, plus 1TB Series X models. A 2TB Galaxy Black Series X special edition was previously offered, but Microsoft announced that it would be sunset from the regular lineup; remaining retailer or refurbished stock may still exist.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Advertised capacity is not the same as usable free space because system software occupies part of the drive. The 512GB Series S can become restrictive quickly when modern games occupy tens or more than 100GB each. It may be perfectly adequate for a small rotation of games, but households with several large downloads should expect frequent uninstalling and reinstalling.

The 1TB Series S is more comfortable, but it does not remove the console’s graphics compromises. Series X generally offers more practical room for a large installed library.

An external USB drive can store games, but many Series X|S-optimized games must be moved to the internal SSD or an approved expansion card before they can be played at full native performance. Xbox Storage Expansion Cards use the dedicated expansion slot and are designed to match the internal SSD experience. Microsoft’s storage and setup guidance explains the distinction.

Size, placement, and cooling

Series S is approximately 60% smaller than Series X and is easier to place in a bedroom, dorm, office, or compact entertainment unit. Its dimensions are approximately 275mm high, 151mm wide, and 65mm deep. The standard disc Series X is approximately 301mm high, 151mm wide, and 151mm deep.

Before buying, measure the cabinet opening rather than just the console footprint. Check whether you will use the console vertically or horizontally, leave adequate ventilation around its vents, and ensure that rear ports and the storage-expansion slot remain accessible. Series S’s small size does not make it safe to seal inside an unventilated compartment.

What both consoles share

  • Xbox ecosystem: Both use the same Xbox account, store, achievements, accessories, and broad online services.
  • Game Pass: The console choice does not determine the basic catalog; the subscription tier does. Microsoft currently lists Essential, Premium, Ultimate, and PC Game Pass plans on its Game Pass comparison page. Prices, promotions, benefits, and catalogs can change.
  • Quick Resume: Both use the SSD and Xbox platform features that can suspend compatible games, though behavior can vary by title and update.
  • Smart Delivery: Compatible games can provide the appropriate Xbox version automatically.
  • Backward compatibility: Supported Xbox One, Xbox 360, and original Xbox games are governed by Microsoft’s compatibility list, not by a guarantee that every historical title works.
  • Loading improvements: Both load substantially faster than Xbox One systems that rely on hard drives. Exact loading times are game- and storage-dependent, so they should not be assumed to be identical.
  • Cloud and multiplayer features: Both support Xbox cloud features and online multiplayer subject to the applicable subscription, game, region, and service requirements.

2026 pricing: check the live listing

Microsoft announced U.S. console price changes effective August 1, 2026. The announcement specified increases of $100 for 512GB models and $150 for 1TB models, and said the 2TB model would be sunset from the regular lineup. It attributed the changes to higher memory and storage costs. Read the Xbox Wire price announcement and verify the exact model at the live Microsoft Store page.

Applying the announced increases to Microsoft’s earlier U.S. price sheet implies approximately $499.99 for the 512GB Series S, $599.99 for the 1TB Series S, $749.99 for the 1TB digital Series X, and $799.99 for the standard 1TB Series X. These are calculated figures, not a substitute for the live checkout price. Retail discounts, refurbished inventory, regional pricing, and remaining discontinued stock can change the comparison.

Do not compare only the box price. Include likely storage expansion, the price of digital versus used physical games, Game Pass subscriptions, warranty coverage, and the length of time you expect to keep the console.

Which Xbox should you buy?

Choose Xbox Series X if:

  • You have a 4K television or high-resolution monitor.
  • You want the best Xbox graphics and the most stable performance available from these consoles.
  • You want a disc drive, physical games, used games, or UHD Blu-ray playback.
  • You already own a physical Xbox library.
  • You want more graphics headroom for future demanding games.
  • You expect to keep the console for several years.
  • You play many large games and want more comfortable internal storage.

Choose Xbox Series S if:

  • You use a 1080p or 1440p display.
  • You primarily use Game Pass or buy games digitally.
  • You want the smallest Xbox console.
  • You need the lowest upfront cost and can manage storage carefully.
  • You do not need physical games or UHD Blu-ray playback.
  • You accept lower-resolution targets and potentially reduced graphics modes.

For a 4K TV

Series S can connect to and output to a 4K TV, but it is not the ideal choice if sharp native-4K rendering is your priority. Series X is the stronger choice for a large 4K screen, especially if you also care about ray tracing, stable 60fps modes, or high-quality textures. On a smaller television viewed from a normal distance, Series S may still look satisfactory.

For a 1080p TV

Series S is often sufficient, but Series X can still be worthwhile. Its benefits are not limited to visible resolution: it can offer better graphics settings, steadier performance, more storage, disc support, and greater long-term headroom. Buy Series X only if those benefits justify the extra cost for your usage.

For Game Pass

Series S is an excellent compact Game Pass machine when most games will be downloaded or streamed. The 1TB model is more sensible for frequent players than the 512GB model if the price gap is acceptable. Series X is better for a Game Pass subscriber who keeps many large games installed, owns a 4K TV, or wants the best console version.

For children and families

Series S is often the simpler family purchase when games are digital, the display is 1080p or 1440p, space is limited, and the lowest upfront cost matters. Series X is preferable when the household already owns physical games, buys used games, shares one console among several players, uses a 4K TV, or expects the system to remain the primary family console for many years.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should Series S owners upgrade to Series X?

There is no universal need to upgrade. Series S remains a valid way to play the Xbox Series X|S generation, particularly on a 1080p or 1440p display and for a digital-first player.

Upgrade when you specifically want higher-resolution output, better graphics modes, more internal storage, a disc drive, or additional performance headroom. Before upgrading, compare the cost of a new or refurbished Series X with the value of your current console and any storage expansion you would otherwise buy.

Common misconceptions

“Series S is next-gen, so it looks identical to Series X.”
It shares the generation and platform, but not the performance ceiling. Developers may reduce resolution, texture quality, ray tracing, shadows, effects, or frame-rate targets.
“Series X always runs every game at 4K and 60fps.”
Games may use dynamic resolution, 30fps quality modes, 60fps performance modes, or other combinations. Check the specific game rather than relying on the console label.
“Series S cannot output 4K.”
It can connect to a 4K display and upscale compatible content. Its games are generally designed around a lower internal rendering target.
“An external USB drive solves storage.”
It helps store games, but many optimized Series X|S titles must be moved to internal storage or an approved expansion card to play.
“All Series X models have a disc drive.”
Digital Series X models exist. Check the exact model, storage capacity, and product description before buying.

Final verdict

Buy Xbox Series X if you want the best Xbox experience, use a 4K display, care about graphics quality, need a disc drive, or want more storage and future headroom. Buy Xbox Series S if you want the smallest digital-only Xbox, primarily use Game Pass, play on a 1080p or 1440p display, and are comfortable managing storage and accepting lower graphics targets.

The word “next-generation” applies to both consoles. The practical choice depends on your display, physical-media habits, storage needs, expected ownership period, and the live price of the exact model—not simply on whether Series S can run the same broad games.
