Winlator is a free Android app that can run some Windows PC games locally on a phone. It does not include commercial games, turn your phone into a fully licensed Windows PC, or make every Windows title compatible. You supply a game you legally own, and results depend heavily on your phone’s chipset, graphics driver, the game and your configuration.
The safest starting point is the original project’s GitHub repository. As checked on August 18, 2026, its latest listed release was Winlator 11.1 Final, released June 12, 2026.

What Winlator actually is
Winlator is better described as a Windows compatibility layer and translation environment than as a conventional Android PC emulator. It combines several technologies:

Winlator organizes these settings into containers. Each container is a separate Windows-like environment with its own resolution, driver, wrapper and other options. That makes it possible to keep one game’s configuration separate from another’s.

The app can be excellent for older 2D games, lightweight indie titles and some older DirectX games. It is not a guaranteed way to run modern AAA releases, competitive multiplayer games or software that depends on kernel-level anti-cheat and proprietary launchers.

Is Winlator really free?
The app is free; the games are not automatically free. You can download the Winlator APK without paying a subscription or cloud-gaming fee, but Winlator does not provide commercial PC games.
Use a Windows installer, DRM-free game, local backup or other files that you are legally entitled to use. A game’s publisher or store license still applies. Do not use cracked executables, unauthorized game archives or piracy-focused download sites.
Winlator also does not give Android a Windows license. It is a compatibility tool for running software, not a replacement for owning the game or meeting its activation requirements.
Will your Android phone run it?
The project’s published requirements are a useful baseline, not a performance guarantee. The WineBox64 requirements page lists:

Read those figures as a starting point. A phone that meets them may still run a demanding 3D game poorly or not at all. You need space for the APK, container files, the game, shader caches, temporary files and possible installers, so having only the stated minimum free storage is not ideal.
A newer Snapdragon phone with an Adreno GPU is generally the least complicated place to start because Turnip is primarily designed for compatible Adreno hardware. Mali and other GPUs may work through Vortek, a system driver or another supported path, but compatibility can be more uneven.
Before installing, check:
- Your Android version.
- The phone’s chipset and GPU.
- Whether the device supports Vulkan 1.1 or later.
- Available internal storage.
- Whether battery-saving software aggressively closes background apps.
Also consider heat. A game may appear smooth for a few minutes and then slow down when the phone throttles. A case, high ambient temperature and maximum brightness can make sustained performance worse.
What to expect by game type

Download Winlator from the right source
Use the original developer repository:

The repository owner should be brunodev85. The project README currently identifies the APK as Winlator_11.1.apk, while release assets and version names can change over time.
Avoid APK mirrors, advertising redirect pages, repacked installers and “modded” builds presented as the official app. Community forks—including device-specific builds—may have legitimate technical reasons to exist, but they are not the default official download and carry separate maintenance and trust considerations.

Install Winlator on Android
1. Download the APK
- Open the official GitHub Releases page.
- Open the current final release.
- Download the APK asset supplied by the original repository.
- Confirm that you are on the
brunodev85/winlatorproject before opening it.
2. Allow installation when Android asks
Android may block an APK downloaded outside Google Play. If that happens, open the warning or search Settings for Install unknown apps. Allow the browser or file manager you used to open the APK, install Winlator, then turn the permission off again if you do not need it.

3. Launch Winlator and wait
Install the APK, launch Winlator and allow its first-run installation process to finish. Do not force-close it immediately if setup takes a while. If it is genuinely frozen for an extended period, restart the app and retry before changing advanced settings.
Create your first container
Winlator’s labels can change between releases, so treat the following as a sensible first configuration rather than a permanent rule.
- Create a new container using the default Wine version and graphics settings.
- Choose a modest resolution such as
800×600or1280×720rather than the phone’s full native resolution. - Use a 32-bit or 64-bit environment that matches the game’s requirements.
- On a compatible Adreno phone, start with Turnip. On other hardware, use the supported system, Vortek or alternative driver offered by the build.
- Keep the default DX wrapper initially.
- Change one setting at a time after testing.
Changing the driver, wrapper, Box64 preset and resolution simultaneously makes troubleshooting difficult. Create a separate container or shortcut configuration when a game needs a substantially different setup.

Install a Windows game you legally own
Installing Winlator and installing a game are separate steps. Winlator does not automatically discover or download your PC library.
Use an installer or game folder
- Copy your legal Windows installer or game folder to a clearly named Android storage directory.
- Open Winlator’s file browser and browse to that location.
- Run the game’s
.exeinstaller if you have one. - Install the game into the container’s Windows drive.
- After installation, create a shortcut to the game’s main executable.
- Launch future sessions through that shortcut.
A shortcut is useful because it can retain per-game settings such as resolution, driver, Box64 preset, command-line arguments and fullscreen behavior. The exact interface can differ between builds, but the principle is the same: keep each game’s configuration separate instead of repeatedly browsing for its executable.
Not every installer works. Some depend on Windows services, online authentication, launchers, DRM or components that Winlator cannot reproduce. A game that opens is not necessarily fully playable: menus, audio, save files, cutscenes, controllers and long-session stability can still fail.
Choose controls that fit the game
- On-screen controls: workable for simple, turn-based or touch-tolerant games.
- Bluetooth or USB-C controller: usually the best option for controller-friendly action games.
- Keyboard and mouse: strongly preferable for strategy, management, simulation, shooter and launcher-heavy software.
Winlator 11.1’s release notes mention improved gamepad implementation and a selectable gamepad model. That does not guarantee that every controller or game will map correctly, so check both Android pairing and the game’s own input settings.
Optional cooling can help with sustained performance, but it cannot fix an incompatible driver or unsupported game. Likewise, a USB-C hub and keyboard may improve usability without making a game compatible.

Improve performance without making troubleshooting harder
Start with the least invasive changes:
- Lower the container or game resolution.
- Reduce shadows, textures, effects and view distance inside the game.
- Close other apps.
- Remove a thick case while testing and keep the phone cool.
- Try an appropriate DX wrapper for the game.
- Test a frame-rate cap if frame pacing is unstable.
For a slow game, the project recommends trying the Performance Box64 preset at Container Settings → Advanced. Performance mode can increase speed but may cause crashes on some games. If that happens, return to a stability-oriented preset.
Turnip can be a strong starting point on supported Adreno devices, while Vortek or a system driver may be necessary elsewhere. Neither is universally best. Driver choice is a per-device and per-game decision.
Winlator troubleshooting checklist
Change one setting, test the game, and record what changed. If a container becomes unusable, recreate the shortcut or make a fresh container rather than altering every option at once.

The project’s release notes and README identify graphics driver, DXVK and Box64 changes as common troubleshooting areas. Check the current documentation because menu names and bundled components can change between releases.
When Winlator is a good—or poor—fit
Winlator is a good fit if you:
- Already own older Windows games.
- Have a reasonably modern Snapdragon/Adreno phone.
- Are comfortable experimenting with drivers and wrappers.
- Mostly play single-player games.
- Have a controller or peripherals suited to the game.
Choose another approach if you:
- Want a one-click console-like experience.
- Need reliable competitive multiplayer or low-latency online play.
- Want to run a recent, demanding AAA release.
- Depend on kernel-level anti-cheat, unsupported launchers or always-online authentication.
- Have weak graphics hardware or strict restrictions on installing APKs.
Cloud gaming is easier for demanding titles but requires a strong connection and may require a subscription. Steam Link or Moonlight can be better if you already own a capable gaming PC, because the phone streams the game instead of running it. Android-native ports are usually simpler where available, while a Windows handheld PC offers broader compatibility at a much higher cost.
Is Winlator worth using?
For a technically inclined Android owner with a suitable phone and a library of older Windows games, Winlator is a compelling free experiment. It can provide local PC gaming without a cloud subscription, but it requires realistic expectations and occasional troubleshooting.
Use the official build, start with conservative container settings, import only games you are legally entitled to use, and treat every title as a separate compatibility case. Winlator is not a replacement for a gaming PC, modern console or universal Windows emulator—but for the right game and phone, it can work surprisingly well.
