The often-cited estimate that Xbox Series X|S had sold fewer than 30 million consoles came from an online hardware leaker, not an official Microsoft disclosure. Microsoft has reported falling Xbox revenue, while a June 2026 U.S. sales rebound offers a brighter but limited data point. The evidence points to real pressure—not a confirmed cumulative sales total or an announced exit from console hardware.
Where the “under 30 million” estimate comes from
HotHardware reported on August 4, 2025, that online hardware leaker KeplerL2 estimated Xbox Series X|S had not reached 30 million units. The report attributed the estimate to analysis of AMD chip sales and comparisons with PlayStation 5 and Steam Deck sales. It put Xbox at no more than 29 million and PS5 at roughly 75 million. Those are leaker-based estimates relayed by a news outlet—not audited Microsoft shipment figures or an official lifetime sales disclosure. HotHardware’s report
The report also pointed to Microsoft’s “This Is an Xbox” marketing campaign and its release of games on rival platforms. Those moves provide context for Xbox’s broader strategy, but they do not prove that Microsoft is ending console production.
What Microsoft’s financial results do—and do not—show
FY2026 Q4: revenue declined
Microsoft reported that Xbox revenue fell 10% year over year in FY2026 Q4. Xbox content and services revenue also fell 10% year over year. The cited disclosure does not provide a separate hardware-revenue percentage for that quarter. Microsoft’s FY2026 Q4 earnings call

The next-quarter statement was a forecast
For the following quarter, Microsoft expected Xbox content and services revenue to decline in the mid-single digits and hardware revenue to decline year over year. That was an outlook, not a reported Q4 hardware result. It is important not to treat the forecast as though Microsoft had disclosed the quarter’s actual console sales or hardware revenue.
The wider Xbox business faces pressure
In its June 2026 update, Xbox said that, excluding Activision Blizzard King, Microsoft had invested more than $20 billion in content, platform, and hardware subsidy over five years while annual revenue had declined by nearly half a billion dollars. These company-reported figures describe the broader Xbox business; they do not identify console hardware as the sole cause of the revenue change. Xbox Wire’s “Next 100 Days: XBOX Reset”

June 2026 brought a U.S. sales rebound, not proof of a turnaround
GameSpot’s report of Circana data says U.S. Xbox Series X|S unit sales rose 86% year over year in June 2026, making it the platform’s best month of that year so far. The comparison was against June 2025, when sales were affected by a May price increase. Xbox’s gain did not offset declines across the overall U.S. hardware market. Why Microsoft says console supply and costs are difficult
In its June 10, 2026 update, Xbox said the price it paid for console storage components was more than twice the level from the prior fall when CEO Asha Sharma joined in February, and had doubled again since then. The company expected another significant increase ahead of the 2027 holiday season, which it said would take costs to more than five times the level paid two years earlier. These are Microsoft’s account of its costs and its forecast, not independently verified measures of costs across the industry.
Xbox also said it could not make as many consoles as players wanted to buy, while affirming its commitment to hardware and Helix. That statement is evidence of Microsoft’s stated intent and its account of supply constraints; it is not an independent measure of unmet demand. The company said it needed a new business model and hardware partnerships as it remained committed to Helix. Xbox Wire, June 10, 2026

What the evidence supports—and what it cannot settle
- Supported: A leaker-based estimate reported in 2025 placed Series X|S below 30 million units. Microsoft has not provided an official lifetime shipment total in the cited material.
- Supported: Microsoft reported a 10% year-over-year decrease in Xbox revenue and in content and services revenue for FY2026 Q4; its statement about next-quarter hardware revenue was a forecast.
- Supported: Circana data reported by GameSpot showed U.S. Series X|S unit sales up 86% year over year in June 2026, against a comparison month affected by a price increase.
- Not established: A like-for-like worldwide lifetime sales comparison between Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo. The leaker estimate, Microsoft’s revenue figures, and Circana’s one-month U.S. unit data measure different things and cannot be combined into a direct ranking.
- Not established: That Microsoft is abandoning console hardware. The company stated that it remains committed to hardware and Helix.
How to read the October 2026 growth report
Windows Central’s October 6, 2026, account of an internal town hall said Sharma described Xbox as declining in hours spent, players, and revenue at the start of the year. The report said hours spent had stabilized and that Xbox had returned to growth in first-party performance; it clarified that the growth reference concerned first-party games specifically. That secondary report should not be read as evidence that console sales or total Xbox revenue had returned to growth. Windows Central’s town hall report
