If Xbox won’t let you sign in, first check whether Xbox services are down, then verify the Microsoft account in a browser. If the account works elsewhere, restart the console, test its network, and remove and re-add the local Xbox profile. PC users should also repair the Xbox app and Gaming Services. Work through these fixes in order so you do not reset the console unnecessarily.
1. Check Xbox service status
Before changing your console or password, check the official Xbox status page. Look for incidents affecting Account & profile, Xbox network, or sign-in.

If Microsoft reports an outage, your password and internet connection may be fine. There is no local repair that will fix a server-side outage, so wait for the service to recover and try again later.
2. Confirm that your Microsoft account works
On a phone or computer, visit account.microsoft.com and sign in with the email address, phone number, or alias used on Xbox. Microsoft aliases belong to the same account and use the same password; an alternate alias is not a separate Xbox account.

If browser sign-in fails, use Microsoft’s Sign-in Helper. If you forgot the password, choose I forgot my password on the sign-in screen or use Microsoft’s password-reset flow.
Xbox Support cannot send password-reset links or bypass Microsoft account security checks. Fix the account sign-in first, then return to the Xbox.
3. Stop retrying if you have made many failed attempts
Repeated incorrect passwords can trigger messages such as “You have tried too many times with an incorrect password” or Error 400. Microsoft says repeated attempts, as well as problems with the device, app, or network, can contribute to these errors.
Do not keep submitting the same password. Instead:
- Choose Other ways to sign in and use a verification method already configured on the account.
- Try signing in from another device.
- Switch temporarily to another network, such as a phone hotspot.
- Use Microsoft’s guidance for too many incorrect-password attempts or Error 400.
4. Restart or power-cycle the Xbox
A normal restart can clear a temporary authentication or network-service problem without removing your account or installed games.

- Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
- Select Profile & system > Power > Restart console.
If that does not help, perform a full power cycle:
- Hold the console’s front Xbox button for 10 seconds, until it shuts down.
- Unplug the power cable and wait at least 10 seconds.
- Reconnect the cable and turn the console on.
A power cycle does not delete installed games or personal data. Microsoft’s restart and power-cycle instructions cover the procedure.
5. Test the Xbox network connection
On Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, open:
Xbox button > Profile & system > Settings > General > Network settings > Test network connection.
If the test fails, restart the router and run it again. You can also connect the console temporarily to a phone hotspot or another Wi-Fi network. If sign-in works on the alternate network, the likely cause is your home router, DNS configuration, filtering, captive portal, or ISP connection rather than the Microsoft account.

Networks that require browser authentication, MAC-address approval, or restrictive firewall rules may work on phones and laptops while blocking Xbox authentication. Ask the network administrator whether consoles are supported.

Only clear the alternate MAC address if you previously configured one or the network specifically requires MAC approval:
Profile & system > Settings > General > Network settings > Advanced settings > Alternate MAC address > Clear > Restart.
Clearing Alternate MAC is not a universal sign-in fix. When no custom alternate MAC was entered, Xbox says it has the same practical effect as restarting the console. See the Xbox explanation of Alternate MAC.
6. Remove and re-add the Xbox profile
If the account works at Microsoft’s website but the console repeatedly rejects or loses the profile, remove the locally stored profile and add it again.

- Select the affected profile and choose Remove.
- Restart the console.
- Press the Xbox button and select Profile & system > Add or switch > Add new.
- Enter the correct Microsoft account credentials.
Removing a profile from the console does not delete the Microsoft account, purchases, achievements, friends list, or cloud account. Make sure you know the correct email address and password before removing it.
7. Install pending console updates
An outdated or partially applied system update can interfere with authentication and Xbox network services.
On Xbox One, open:
Xbox button > Profile & system > Settings > System > Updates & downloads > Update console.
If No console update available is grayed out, Microsoft says the console is already up to date. To view the installed system version, open Settings > System > Console info. See Microsoft’s Xbox One update instructions.

8. Repair or reset the Xbox app on Windows
This fix applies to the Xbox app for Windows, not the Xbox console dashboard.
On Windows 11:
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Xbox, select its More button (…), and choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- If sign-in still fails, select Reset.
Repair attempts to fix the app while retaining its data. Reset clears local app data, preferences, and sign-in state, so you will need to sign in again. Not every Windows app exposes both options; Microsoft documents the behavior in its app repair and reset guide.
Also install pending platform updates:
- Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
- Open Microsoft Store > Library > Get updates.
Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. Microsoft no longer provides free Windows updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for that operating system.

On PC, use this step when the Xbox app is stuck on Launching Xbox, repeatedly requests sign-in, or shows Gaming Services errors such as 0x80073D26 or 0x8007139F.
Use the Gaming Services Repair Tool
Download Microsoft’s Gaming Services Repair Tool from aka.ms/GamingRepairTool. Run it as administrator and follow its prompts. This is preferable to manually changing system components.
Reset the Microsoft Store cache
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
wsreset.exeexactly. - Select OK.
- Wait for the blank Command Prompt window to close and Microsoft Store to reopen.
Microsoft documents wsreset.exe as the Microsoft Store cache-reset command.
Advanced repair for specific legacy errors
For the documented Gaming Services errors 0x80073D26 and 0x8007139F, Microsoft also provides an administrator PowerShell procedure. Use it only for that specific failure, because it removes Gaming Services components.

Remove-Item -Path "HKLM:SystemCurrentControlSetServicesGamingServicesNet" -recurse
Save the commands as RepairGamingServices.ps1, choose All Files (*.*) as the file type, right-click the file, select Run as administrator, and restart the PC. Open the Xbox app and select Install when the Gaming Services banner appears. Microsoft’s KB5004327 guidance documents this advanced method.
What not to assume
- Xbox Game Pass or Xbox Live Gold is not required merely to sign in. Subscription requirements depend on the game or online feature.
- Clearing Alternate MAC is not a routine sign-in fix. It is mainly relevant to a custom alternate MAC or a network requiring MAC whitelisting.
- Resetting the console is not harmless. The Reset and keep my games & apps option preserves installed games and apps, but resets console configuration and removes locally stored account settings. You must sign in again afterward. Use it only after the fixes above.
- Keep the Xbox app and Microsoft Store accounts aligned on Windows. Mismatched Microsoft accounts can cause ownership, installation, and authentication problems. Use the account associated with the Xbox profile and purchased content in both apps.
Which fix should you try first?
| What you see | Best next step |
|---|---|
| Xbox status reports an outage | Wait for Microsoft to restore service. |
| You cannot sign in at account.microsoft.com | Use Microsoft’s Sign-in Helper or reset the password. |
| “Too many times” or Error 400 | Stop retrying, use another verification method or device, and switch networks. |
| Browser sign-in works but Xbox does not | Restart the console, test the network, then remove and re-add the profile. |
| Sign-in works on a hotspot but not home Wi-Fi | Investigate the router, DNS, filtering, captive portal, or ISP. |
| Windows Xbox app shows Gaming Services errors | Repair or reset the app, then run the Gaming Services Repair Tool. |
