Microsoft’s March 26, 2025 Xbox update refreshed Game Bar on Windows PCs and handheld gaming PCs, improved controller navigation in Compact Mode, and introduced new ways to move between related games in Xbox Cloud Gaming. It also expanded the “Stream Your Own Game” catalog for eligible Game Pass Ultimate members.
Game Bar gets a visual refresh
Microsoft describes the change as a refreshed design rather than a completely new application. The update affects the main Game Bar interface and several of its components:

The most practical improvement for controller users is better navigation in the Widget Store, particularly in Compact Mode. Compact Mode is Game Bar’s controller-oriented layout for Windows PCs and handhelds; it does not turn every Windows PC into a console-style interface.
Game Bar remains a Windows overlay, separate from the Xbox PC app. To open it during a game, press Win + G. Microsoft’s Xbox PC app page also lists this shortcut.

How to access the updated Game Bar
- Start a game on a compatible Windows PC or handheld.
- Press
Win + G. - Check the refreshed Home Bar and widgets.
- Open the Widget Store and test controller navigation.
- If available on your device, try Compact Mode.
The update rolled out during the week of March 26, 2025, so some users may not have seen it immediately. If the design is missing, update Xbox Game Bar and the Xbox app through the Microsoft Store, install pending Windows updates, and restart the PC. Microsoft did not specify one universal Game Bar build number for this release. Availability can also vary by device, Windows version, account, and rollout status.
The announcement does not claim improvements to recording quality, frame rates, widget accuracy, or streaming performance. It is primarily an interface and navigation update.

The March update introduced a more convenient way to move between supported games without returning to the Xbox Cloud Gaming home page. The initial example began with Assassin’s Creed Shadows. From that game’s Cloud Gaming experience, players could launch:
- Assassin’s Creed Origins
- Assassin’s Creed Odyssey
- Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
- Assassin’s Creed Mirage
Microsoft presented this as the beginning of broader support, not as a universal launcher for every Cloud Gaming title. It also does not mean switching is instantaneous, removes stream startup time, or guarantees seamless progress and cross-save behavior in every game. Browser, device, region, network, and account requirements still apply.

“Stream Your Own Game” expands
“Stream Your Own Game” allows eligible users to stream certain games they own through Xbox Cloud Gaming, instead of limiting cloud access to titles included in their subscription library. Microsoft tied the March 2025 expansion to Game Pass Ultimate members.

This is the catalog announced in March 2025, not a guarantee of what is streamable in September 2026. Ownership alone does not make every game eligible. Licensing, region, platform, supported device, and account entitlement can all affect availability. Check the current catalog and requirements before subscribing or buying a game specifically for cloud streaming.

Other features in the March Xbox update
The announcement also covered new in-game benefits for participating free-to-play games for eligible Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass members. Examples included Heroes of the Storm, Naraka: Bladepoint, and The Finals, with planned benefits for Call of Duty: Warzone and Enlisted.
Microsoft additionally highlighted the Xbox Adaptive Joystick and changes to Xbox Rewards. These features were part of the wider monthly update, but they are separate from the Game Bar redesign and Cloud Gaming navigation changes.

The March update makes the Windows Xbox experience more consistent for players who use a controller rather than a mouse and keyboard. That matters most on compact Windows handhelds, where opening and navigating desktop-oriented menus can be awkward.
However, the handheld benefit should not be overstated. Compact Mode is a Game Bar layout, not the later full-screen Xbox Mode for Windows 11 announced in 2026. Likewise, later features such as Gamepad Cursor and network-quality indicators should not be treated as part of the March 2025 release. Microsoft continued updating Game Bar after March, including further visual and control changes in its May 2025 update and later releases.

You do not need Game Pass merely to open or use Game Bar. Game Pass relates to game access, Cloud Gaming, and participating in-game benefits. The Xbox PC app is a free download, but individual games and cloud features may require separate purchases or subscriptions. Players whose libraries are mainly on Steam or another PC launcher may gain little from subscribing solely for the overlay.

Is the redesigned Game Bar available on Windows 10?
The March announcement did not provide a simple universal Windows 10 eligibility statement. Availability depends on the supported Windows version, installed Xbox components, device, and rollout. Check Windows and Microsoft Store updates rather than assuming the design is available on every Windows installation.

No. Game Bar is a Windows gaming overlay and can be opened with Win + G. Game Pass is relevant to subscription game access, Cloud Gaming, and selected in-game benefits.
Does “Stream Your Own Game” include every game I own?
No. Only selected games are supported, and availability can vary by region, platform, licensing, device, and account. Game ownership by itself is not a guarantee of cloud-streaming access.

Can I switch between any Cloud Gaming games?
No. The March feature began with a limited Assassin’s Creed example: Assassin’s Creed Shadows could lead to selected related games. It was not presented as universal instant switching across the Cloud Gaming catalog.
Why can’t I see the new Game Bar design?
Update Xbox Game Bar and the Xbox app in the Microsoft Store, install Windows updates, restart the device, and check again. The feature initially rolled out over time, and device or account eligibility may differ.

Is this the same as Xbox Mode on Windows 11?
No. Xbox Mode was a later 2026 Windows experience. The March 2025 announcement concerned a Game Bar visual refresh, widget updates, and improved Compact Mode navigation.
