1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsXDefiant did not use skill-based matchmaking (SBMM) to decide who entered a casual lobby. Ubisoft presented that choice as a deliberate design position, and it made the game stand out in a genre where skill-based pairing is common. It did not, however, reshape the FPS market, and the game itself no longer exists in playable form. Ubisoft announced on December 3, 2024 that it was discontinuing development, and the servers were closed in June 2025. The headline’s present tense is therefore out of date. The more accurate story is about a visible design bet, the reasoning Ubisoft gave for it, and what the evidence does and does not show about its effect.
What XDefiant’s casual matchmaking actually prioritized
The clearest statement of how XDefiant’s matchmaking worked comes from Ubisoft’s May 2024 explanation of its matchmaking approach, as reproduced in a DestroyRepeat archive dated May 20, 2024. PC Gamer’s contemporary coverage by Elie Gould, dated May 15, 2024, reported the same announced approach. Both describe the casual playlist in the same terms.

Casual playlists: connection and lobby conditions first
In casual play, Ubisoft listed the matchmaking priorities in this order:
- Latency
- Blocked players
- Party size
- Region
- Input device
- Platform
Skill was not among these selection criteria. Ubisoft’s wording was that “the casual lobby does not use skill to determine who gets into the game.”

After the lobby fills: skill-based team balancing
“No SBMM” did not mean that skill was ignored for the whole match. Once the lobby was populated, Ubisoft said it balanced teams using players’ Skill Rating so that the match would be fair in its composition. In other words, the skill signal was applied after players had been placed together, not used to decide which players were placed together.
Ranked play: rank-based selection
Ranked matchmaking worked differently. Ubisoft said it used rank points and rank ranges to pair players, with latency, party size, region, input device, and platform also taken into account. The table below sets the two modes side by side.

| Factor | Casual playlist (as described by Ubisoft, May 2024) | Ranked playlist (as described by Ubisoft, May 2024) |
|---|---|---|
| Primary way players are grouped into a lobby | Latency, blocked players, party size, region, input device, platform, in that priority order; skill not used to select players | Rank points and rank ranges |
| Other factors considered | Not applicable beyond the priority list above | Latency, party size, region, input device, platform |
| Use of Skill Rating | Used to balance teams once the lobby is populated | Not separately described in the May 2024 explanation |
Ubisoft’s stated reasoning
Ubisoft framed the casual decision as a bet on variety rather than on tighter competitive pairing. The company wrote: “We believe that no SBMM is paramount to a fun and varied game experience in the long-term.” That is the publisher’s rationale. It explains what Ubisoft intended. It is not evidence that the approach produced a more varied or enjoyable experience for players in general, and the available sources do not include a representative study that tests that claim.
What “game changer” can and cannot mean here
The phrase is defensible only as a description of XDefiant’s explicit design position and the debate it provoked. It does not describe a measured industry-wide shift. Four questions separate what the evidence supports from what it does not.

| Question | What the sources establish | What they do not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Who is selected by skill: the lobby or the team? | In casual play, lobbies were formed without skill; teams were balanced by Skill Rating after the lobby filled. | Nothing beyond Ubisoft’s published description. |
| How do casual connection speed and lobby composition compare with rank-based ranked selection? | Casual used latency and lobby conditions first; ranked used rank points and rank ranges. | No measured comparison of match quality or connection outcomes between the two modes. |
| Did the design deliver intended variety, and at what cost to predictability or perceived fairness? | Ubisoft stated the goal of a fun, varied, less repetitive casual experience. | No representative evidence shows whether players found matches more varied, more predictable, or fairer. |
| Are player reactions anecdotal or representative? | Contemporary coverage reported player reactions to the approach. | Those reactions cannot be generalized to “FPS players” as a whole. |
How XDefiant ended
On December 3, 2024, Ubisoft announced that it was discontinuing development on XDefiant. The statement, attributed to Marie-Sophie de Waubert, Chief Studios and Portfolio Officer at Ubisoft, read: “Despite an encouraging start, the team’s passionate work, and a committed fan base, we’ve not been able to attract and retain enough players in the long run to compete at the level we aim for in the very demanding free-to-play FPS market.”
The statement gives inadequate long-term player attraction and retention as the reason. It does not say that matchmaking caused that shortfall, and it does not isolate the no-SBMM design as a factor. Any link between the two is an inference the sources do not make.

Is XDefiant still playable?
No. The servers were closed in June 2025, and the sources report no legacy access route or revival. Anyone searching for XDefiant’s matchmaking today is reading about a discontinued game, so the design is best understood as a historical case rather than a current option.

Verdict
XDefiant’s casual playlist was a distinctive, openly stated choice: connection quality and lobby conditions decided who got in, and skill came into play only for balancing once a lobby filled. Ubisoft’s reason was variety and long-term enjoyment. The evidence supports the design description and the stated intent. It does not support a claim that the approach changed how FPS players as a whole matched, and it does not show that matchmaking caused the game’s end. Ubisoft’s own explanation for the discontinuation points to player attraction and retention over the long run.
