Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition — Gem Crafting Guide

Gem crafting in Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition comes down to combining same-rank crystals or cylinders that share your target attribute, then choosing the Shooter and Engineer pair that suits your goal.

Gem crafting in Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition rests on one practical rule: combine crystals or cylinders of the same rank that share the attribute you want, then choose the crafting pair based on the result you are after. Push one attribute to 100% and you can claim it as a gem. Everything else in the system supports that goal.

How the crafting system works

Crystals are the raw inputs. Each crystal carries one or more attributes, and each attribute is shown as a percentage showing how far it has developed. Crafting refines those attributes into gems that you can equip for battle effects. Cylinders are the other input type: they can hold unfinished attributes forward so you can continue crafting them later.

When you combine inputs that share an attribute, their percentages add together. That is the core mechanic. You are not trying to make a balanced item. You are trying to make one attribute cross the 100% threshold while the rest of the inputs contribute what they can.

Step-by-step: crafting a gem

  1. Decide the target attribute. Pick the one attribute that matters for the gem you want. Everything else in the session is secondary.
  2. Collect same-rank inputs. Inputs must be the same rank. Mixing ranks is the most common reason a session does not work as planned; Game8 warns against it directly.
  3. Select two to eight items. GameFAQs describes a crafting set of two to eight same-rank items. Choose items that share your target attribute rather than spreading a small set across unrelated attributes.
  4. Choose the Shooter and Engineer. Your two party members take part in the session. See the pairing section below for what each one changes.
  5. Run the crafting rounds. Crafting takes several rounds, and the outcome can vary from session to session. Do not expect a fixed result from identical inputs.
  6. Claim or save the result. An attribute at 100% can be claimed as a gem. Useful attributes below 100% can be saved as cylinders for a later session, subject to your cylinder gauge and the session outcome.

Choosing inputs for a specific goal

The fastest way to decide what to select is to match your goal to the input strategy. The table below reflects the basic mechanics described by the GameFAQs gem guide and Game8. It does not establish a guaranteed result for any specific combination.

Goal What to select Why it helps
One reliable, high-quality gem Same-rank inputs that all carry your target attribute Matching attributes add together, which is how a single attribute reaches 100%.
Keep unfinished progress for later Inputs whose useful attributes are below 100%, saved as cylinders Cylinders can carry unfinished attributes forward instead of forcing them into a finished gem.
Mixed attributes in a small set Fewer inputs with clearly different attributes Spreading a small set across unrelated attributes makes it harder for any one attribute to reach 100%.

Choosing the Shooter and Engineer pair

Two party members take part in crafting: a Shooter and an Engineer. Each one affects the session in a different way.

  • Shooter: Contributes a character-specific ability that changes how crafting behaves.
  • Engineer: Influences the type of flame that the session produces.
  • Affinity between the pair: According to the GameFAQs gem guide and Game8, affinity affects the number of crafting rounds. Higher affinity is one lever for improving the opportunity for a better result, but it does not guarantee one.

Game8 discusses specific pairs and character abilities. Its material does not establish a verified full ranking of pairs against official Definitive Edition documentation. A pair can be recommended for a particular goal, with the affinity level and the crafting behavior you want stated as conditions. Treat any single “best pair” headline as one guide’s opinion rather than a fixed rule.

Advanced Heat thresholds

iMore reports two advanced thresholds for the attribute percentage. Reaching 200% produces Heat and raises the gem grade. Exceeding 300% produces Mega Heat and two full-strength gems. These thresholds come from a secondary guide, not from Nintendo documentation. Confirm them in the in-game tutorial or in your own session before you plan around them.

Where crystals come from

The GameFAQs walkthrough and the gem guide describe crystals as coming from deposits and monster rewards in Definitive Edition. Nintendo’s instruction booklet for the original Wii release also describes mining ether deposits for crystals and crafting them into ether gems. That booklet supports the franchise background, but it predates Definitive Edition and should not be read as an edition-specific manual.

Version note

Nintendo’s support page lists Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition version 2.0.0, released June 9, 2026. The listed change is compatibility with Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, and the same page lists no changes for Nintendo Switch. The update notes do not establish any change to gem crafting, so the mechanics above are based on the GameFAQs, Game8, and iMore guides rather than on the update.

Basic mechanics versus secondary claims

  • Basic mechanics (from the gem guides): same-rank inputs, two to eight items per session, attributes that add together, attributes claimed at 100%, cylinders for unfinished attributes, and the Shooter, Engineer, and affinity roles.
  • Secondary claims (from individual guides): the 200% Heat and 300% Mega Heat thresholds, and the recommendations for a single best pair.

Use the basic mechanics as the working rules for any session. Test the secondary claims in your own game before relying on them.
