Heart-to-Hearts in Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition are character conversations that start when you examine a heart icon at a set spot in the world. The icon alone does not guarantee the scene. Each event can also depend on an affinity level, a story event, both characters being in the active party, or a time of day. Community references put the total at 63 Heart-to-Hearts, a figure from a secondary source that you can check against your own in-game list. This guide explains how the gates work, how to find events by area, and how to handle the dialogue choices.
How a Heart-to-Heart starts
Nintendo’s Xenoblade Chronicles instruction booklet describes the basic mechanic: you examine a heart icon to start a conversation, and some conditions must be met before you can view it. That booklet covers the original game, so treat it as the reference for how the system works, and check Definitive Edition specifics against the guides below.

The four gates to check
Spoiler warning: the prerequisite columns in full event guides include late-game story triggers. If you want to avoid plot details, read only the location and character columns until you reach that point.

A community FAQ on GameFAQs describes four kinds of condition. They are not all required for every event, so check each event’s row to see which apply.

Affinity colors
The GameFAQs FAQ lists affinity colors in this order:
- Yellow
- Green
- Blue
- Purple
- Pink
Each event row lists the color required for that pair, so you can see at a glance whether a scene is available yet.

Finding events by area
The iMore Heart-to-Heart guide is organized by area. Each row gives the event’s location, participating characters, affinity, prerequisite, and two dialogue prompts. Its Colony 9 section covers ten events, including Tephra Cave. Its Upper Bionis section covers fifteen events, including Eryth Sea, Alcamoth, High Entia Tomb and Valak Mountain. Those section totals reflect that guide’s own grouping, not the full game count.
A sample entry shows the format. “Sunrise in the Park” takes place at Outlook Park, features Shulk and Fiora, requires yellow affinity, and lists no prerequisite. Several Upper Bionis events require green or purple affinity, so check each row rather than assuming a shared requirement.

- Rebuild humanity on the mysterious planet Mira in this action RPG that’s been enhanced for the Nintendo Switch 2 system
Game8’s Heart-to-Heart answers page covers the same areas and can be used to cross-check rows and dialogue prompts. Where two guides differ on a row, trust the in-game behavior you observe and check the event again later.
Step-by-step: triggering an event
- Open the area section of an event guide and find the row for the pair you want.
- Confirm the prerequisite is complete. If the row lists none, move on.
- Check the affinity color for the pair.
- Set your party so both characters are in the active battle formation.
- If the row lists a time of day, wait for that time.
- Examine the heart icon at the listed location.
- Choose the response the guide gives for that event, then check the Heart-to-Heart list to confirm the event is recorded.
Dialogue choices and affinity
Nintendo’s manual states: “Sometimes you will need to choose from two conversation options to help the characters get to know each other better. These choices will affect the affinity level of the characters involved.” That confirms choices matter, but it does not say which option helps in any given scene.
Rank #4
Do not assume that the more positive-sounding option raises affinity. Use the response column for the specific event. If a guide does not give an outcome for an option, treat that as unconfirmed rather than assuming a result.
Tracking your progress
iMore reports that events you have found appear in the game’s Heart-to-Heart list, and that icons appear on the map. Use the list to see what remains and the map to locate the next heart icon.

How many Heart-to-Hearts there are
The Xenoblade Wiki’s Heart-to-Heart page reports 63 events and says viewed scenes can be replayed in the Definitive Edition Events Theater. This is a community count, not an official figure, so confirm the total against your in-game list before treating it as final.
Future Connected is separate
The Xenoblade Wiki distinguishes Future Connected’s Quiet Moments from the main game’s Heart-to-Hearts. Quiet Moments are not part of the 63-event main-game count, so do not use them when tracking main-game progress.
Voiced conversations on Switch 2 Edition
Nintendo Support’s DLC availability page says the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Upgrade Pack provides fully voiced Heart-to-Heart conversations. That is a feature of the Switch 2 Edition upgrade, not a general claim about the standard Nintendo Switch version.
