For most players, the Nintendo Switch Definitive Edition of Xenoblade Chronicles X is the version to play. Its strongest case rests less on the visual update than on a long list of changes that remove friction from the 2015 Wii U original: time-of-day control, autosave, a clearer interface, faster reuse of Arts, and a smoother early game. This assessment draws on Nintendo Life’s review of the European release (published March 18, 2025), Tom’s Guide’s early-play account, and Nintendo’s own product pages. It is not based on hands-on testing by this site.
What the game is
Nintendo places the story in 2054, after Earth is destroyed in an intergalactic war. You play a customizable survivor in the New Los Angeles colony on Mira, a sprawling alien world, and help the BLADE organization rebuild humanity’s home. This is a remaster of a 2015 Wii U game, not a new numbered entry in the series.

- Class-and-ability combat, which Nintendo describes as deep.
- Party affinity, a core system Nintendo lists alongside combat and exploration.
- Skells, customizable giant mechs used in combat and exploration. The review describes earning one as a late-game reward that finally lets you take flight.
- Online squad activities and multiplayer-specific missions. Nintendo says these require a Nintendo Switch Online membership and a Nintendo Account.
What the remaster changes
Quality-of-life changes
Nintendo Life’s review and its changes guide list the most concrete improvements:
#1 Best Overall
- Rebuild humanity on the mysterious planet Mira in this action RPG that’s been enhanced for the Nintendo Switch 2 system
- Time of day can be changed from the menu.
- Autosave is added, along with three additional save slots.
- A Quick Cooldown mechanic lets you reuse Arts sooner.
- A new codex offers more extensive tutorials.
- The interface is larger and cleaner, the map is easier to read, and collectibles are easier to identify.
- Loading times are reduced.
Friction the revisions remove
The review focuses on two original annoyances that have been addressed. The first is recruitment: the original required you to run to characters in order to recruit them. The second is field-skill tasks, which the review describes as fiddly and repetitive in the original. Nintendo Life says these revisions make the game feel streamlined and modernized, and it is the reason the review argues the gameplay changes matter at least as much as the visual update.
Visuals: a remaster, not a rebuild
The visual update is real but bounded. Nintendo Life’s changes guide cites improved character models, draw distance, lighting, and environmental textures, and states explicitly that this is not a complete visual overhaul. The review calls the presentation much improved. If you expect a ground-up remake, the Switch edition will not deliver one.

Who it suits
First-time players
Expect a large RPG with a real learning curve and a delayed payoff. The review’s author says the experience began to click around 20 hours in. That is one reviewer’s experience, not a standard point at which the game starts to work for everyone. Tom’s Guide’s early-play account praises the freedom to explore Mira but says the author had not progressed far enough to judge the full story.

Returning Wii U players
If you played the original, the case for returning is clearest. The expanded story and the accumulated quality-of-life changes are the reasons the review gives for revisiting it. The visual update alone will not be enough reason on its own, since the remaster does not overhaul the look of the game.

Verdict
The Switch Definitive Edition is a worthwhile way to play Xenoblade Chronicles X. Its best improvements are the ones that make the game less tedious: menu-level time control, autosave, Quick Cooldown, reduced loading, and easier recruitment and field tasks. The visual gains are welcome but modest. If you are deciding whether to commit to a long, slow-opening open-world RPG, the review’s own experience suggests that patience is the price of admission, and the revisions make that patience easier to spend.
