Xiaomi announced WinPlay Engine on January 21, 2025, as a way to run some Windows games locally on a Xiaomi tablet. The initial community test was tied to the Xiaomi Pad 6S Pro 12.4, not every Xiaomi tablet. WinPlay is a game-compatibility environment for HyperOS—not a Windows installation, a general-purpose PC mode, or a guarantee that the Steam catalog will work.
What Xiaomi announced
Xiaomi described WinPlay Engine as a system-level technology for running Windows games on tablets using HyperOS and Xiaomi HyperCore. The January 2025 announcement was a technology test, with enrollment reported through Xiaomi’s Chinese community, rather than a finished product launch or a global feature rollout. IT之家’s announcement report and its Pad 6S Pro test report identified the Xiaomi Pad 6S Pro 12.4 as the initial test device.
WinPlay was presented as local execution on the tablet, not as a stream from a gaming PC. But “local” does not mean the tablet runs Windows or executes ordinary PC game code natively on its ARM processor. It means the system attempts to make selected Windows games work within a HyperOS-based environment.
How a Windows game can run on an ARM tablet
A typical Windows PC game is built for a different processor architecture and software environment from an Android tablet. A compatibility system has to translate or otherwise handle the game’s instructions and graphics calls, provide the expected runtime behavior, and connect the game to the tablet’s display, storage, and controls. Xiaomi has not publicly documented enough of WinPlay’s architecture to establish its exact components, so it should not be assigned specific third-party technologies.

Each layer creates potential compatibility and performance problems. A game may rely on a graphics feature, runtime, launcher, DRM system, controller input, or anti-cheat mechanism that the environment cannot provide. A title that opens can still have glitches, unstable frame rates, or controls that need work.
Which Xiaomi tablets are confirmed?
Xiaomi Pad 6S Pro 12.4: the original test device
The Pad 6S Pro 12.4 is the tablet named in reports about the initial WinPlay beta. Xiaomi’s support information identifies its processor as a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 with an Adreno 740 GPU; its display is 12.4 inches and supports up to 144Hz according to Xiaomi’s FAQ. Xiaomi Pad 8 Pro: newer hardware, unconfirmed WinPlay support
The Pad 8 Pro launched on February 28, 2026, and Xiaomi markets it for gaming and PC-like productivity. Its official product information describes features such as a PC-level browser and WPS Office PC features, but does not confirm WinPlay support. A more powerful processor does not by itself establish that Xiaomi has enabled or supported the compatibility system on this model. Check Xiaomi’s Pad 8 Pro product page and launch information for the features Xiaomi does document.
Do not assume that every Xiaomi tablet, or every regional version of a supported model, has WinPlay. Firmware, HyperOS version, region, and account eligibility can affect feature availability, and Xiaomi has not published a global compatibility matrix in the cited material.

Does WinPlay run Steam games?
Early reporting said Steam could be used to install or launch games in the test environment. That is evidence of reported Steam access, not proof that every Steam game is compatible. Steam is a storefront and launcher; each game still has its own technical requirements and protections. IT之家’s test coverage and TechSpot’s summary describe the early capability, but there is no authoritative complete WinPlay game list.
- A game can fail before launch because of an incompatible launcher, DRM, missing runtime, or executable.
- Unsupported graphics features can cause a black screen, visual corruption, or crashes.
- Anti-cheat systems may reject a compatibility environment, making online multiplayer especially uncertain.
- A game may start but have poor performance or unusable controls, particularly if it expects specific keyboard, mouse, or controller behavior.
Older or lighter games are more plausible candidates than demanding current releases, but age alone does not guarantee compatibility. The game’s graphics API, drivers, input support, and other dependencies matter as much as its headline hardware demands.

What the performance reports do—and do not—show
TechSpot reported Xiaomi’s claim of a 2.9% GPU-performance loss in internal testing. That is a company-reported overhead figure, not an independent benchmark, and it does not establish the tablet’s absolute performance in a game or its behavior over a long session. A separate report cited a Tomb Raider result of about 45 frames per second at roughly 8.3 watts; those figures were relayed through secondary reporting of Xiaomi-related testing, not an independent test. The repost containing those figures should be read with that attribution in mind.
One reported result for Tomb Raider (2013) cannot predict performance across the Steam catalog. Game engine, graphics API, resolution, settings, memory use, translation overhead, and heat all affect the outcome. Xiaomi warns that demanding settings and heat-related thermal throttling can cause lag on the Pad 6S Pro; its support guidance on gaming lag is relevant to sustained play. A game that performs acceptably in a short run may slow down after the tablet heats up, and local gaming also draws power from the tablet’s battery.

What WinPlay is not
- Not Windows for tablets: WinPlay does not turn the device into a Windows PC or install a Windows desktop operating system.
- Not a general Windows app environment: Initial reporting said standard Windows applications were unsupported. That includes the claim that it provides full Windows Office, desktop multitasking, or Windows drivers. El País SmartLife’s report describes the game-focused limitation.
- Not universal Steam compatibility: Store access and game-by-game compatibility are separate things.
- Not confirmed global availability: The initial test was reported in Xiaomi’s Chinese community ecosystem, and the cited global support pages do not establish a stable international release.
- Not the same as Xiaomi’s newer productivity features: PC-like browser or office features on another tablet do not prove WinPlay support.
Should you buy a Xiaomi tablet for Windows gaming?
Not if you need predictable, plug-and-play Windows game compatibility. WinPlay is better suited to technically curious owners willing to experiment with an early, region-limited feature and troubleshoot titles individually. The Pad 6S Pro is the model directly associated with the original test reports; newer Xiaomi tablets should not be bought solely on the assumption that WinPlay works on them.
- Choose a Windows handheld if your priority is running Windows games and launchers directly, while accepting a handheld PC’s higher power use, fan noise, and Windows maintenance.
- Use remote play if you already own a gaming PC and have a strong home network. The PC renders the game; the tablet receives a video stream, so this is not WinPlay or local execution.
- Consider cloud gaming if you have reliable low-latency internet and a service available in your region. It avoids local compatibility requirements but depends on the service’s catalog and terms.
- Explore Android compatibility tools cautiously if you want community-driven experimentation. They are separate from WinPlay and do not guarantee reliable support or performance.
Before trying a reported beta, verify that Xiaomi offers it for your exact model, region, and firmware through an official channel. Do not sideload an alleged package without a trustworthy official download and device-specific instructions; unofficial builds may create security, stability, or warranty complications.
Availability as of October 2026
The cited reporting establishes a Chinese-community test on the Pad 6S Pro, but not a verified global stable release, complete game-compatibility list, or public rollout schedule. Community claims about Pad 8-series testing are not equivalent to Xiaomi confirmation. For a specific tablet, look for an official Xiaomi regional announcement, firmware note, or support page naming both the model and WinPlay before treating the feature as available.
