xl8805.dll is an old Microsoft Excel 97 component, not a Windows system DLL. If Excel reports that xl8805.dll is missing, damaged, or could not be loaded, repair or reinstall the original Excel 97 or Office 97 installation rather than copying a random DLL into a Windows system folder.
The file is associated with the Microsoft Excel Lexicon, a localized Excel component used in the Czech edition of Excel 97. Microsoft’s historical documentation records the file in an Office installation directory, such as:

The filename can be genuine when it is requested by an old Excel installation. That does not make every copy found online trustworthy. A replacement from an unknown source may be modified, incomplete, the wrong language edition, or incompatible with the rest of the installation.

Why Excel reports this error
The most likely causes are:
- The Excel 97 installation is incomplete or damaged.
- A Windows 98 or Windows Me upgrade exposed a historical Czech Excel 97 compatibility problem.
- Antivirus software quarantined or deleted the file.
- Excel 97 is being run on Windows 10 or Windows 11, where old applications can fail because of architecture and security changes.
- A cleanup utility, rollback, or failed installation removed part of Office.
- A different legacy program is requesting the file, and the error has been incorrectly attributed to Excel.
The exact wording varies. You may see a message saying that xl8805.dll is missing, was not found, is damaged, or could not be loaded. Common English messages shown on third-party file pages are not confirmed as universal Excel 97 wording by Microsoft.
Fix 1: Confirm which program is requesting the file
Before replacing anything, identify the executable named in the error.
- Close the error message.
- Look at the application window, shortcut, or installer that started the error.
- Right-click the shortcut and select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, inspect Target.
- Check whether the target is an old Excel executable or another legacy application.
- If the error appeared during startup, open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Escand look for the application that launched at the same time.
If the requesting program is not Excel, repair or reinstall that program instead. A leftover shortcut, an old installer, or malware may request a filename that originally belonged to Excel.
Do not assume that a file named in an error belongs to the program currently visible on screen.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the original Excel 97 installation
This is the safest and most likely solution when Excel 97 itself displays the error.
If the original Office media is available
- Close Excel and every other Office application.
- Insert the original Office 97 or Excel 97 installation disc, or mount the trusted installation media.
- Open the media in File Explorer.
- Run
Setup.exe. - Choose the maintenance, repair, or installation option offered by Setup.
- Select Repair if it is available.
- Keep the original language edition and installation location.
- Restart Windows after Setup completes.
- Start Excel again and test the same workbook or shortcut.
A successful repair should restore the missing component beside the Excel executable or in the original Office directory. It should not require placing the file in a Windows system directory.
If repair is not offered, uninstall the damaged Office 97 installation and reinstall it from original licensed media. Record any add-ins, templates, and custom settings first because removing an old Office installation can affect them.

Use the same language edition and, where applicable, the same service-release level as the existing installation. A Czech Excel installation should not be repaired with an unrelated language edition merely because the program version appears similar.
If several Office versions are installed
Older Office versions can coexist imperfectly. Check which installation the shortcut actually starts.

- Right-click the Excel shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Read the executable path in Target.
- Compare that path with the Office installation you intend to repair.
- Run Setup for that specific installation, not the first Office product listed in Windows.
Repairing Microsoft 365 or a newer Office installation will not normally restore an Office 97 component.
For current Office installations
If the error is actually coming from a current Office product rather than Excel 97:

- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the installed Office product.
- Select the three-dot menu and choose Modify.
- Choose Quick Repair, then select Repair.
- If the problem remains, repeat the process and choose Online Repair.
Microsoft’s Office repair process is appropriate for the selected modern Office installation. It is not a source for the obsolete xl8805.dll file.
Fix 3: Use the historical Czech Excel 97 workaround carefully
Microsoft’s archived documentation describes a specific problem involving Czech Excel 97 after an upgrade to Windows Me. The error identified XL8805.DLL as missing or damaged in the Office directory.
The documented workaround was:
- Open the original Office installation directory.
- Locate
XL8405.DLL. - Make a copy in the same directory.
- Rename the copied file to
XL8805.DLL. - Start Excel and test it.
Use this only when all of the following are true:
- The application is Excel 97.
- The installation is the Czech edition.
- The error appeared in the historical Windows 98 or Windows Me upgrade scenario.
XL8405.DLLis already present in the same Office directory.- You have a backup of the original installation.
This is a narrowly documented workaround, not a general DLL replacement rule. It does not prove that the two files are interchangeable in every Excel version, language, or installation. Do not apply it to Microsoft 365, Office 2024, unrelated programs, or a modern missing-DLL error.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may remove or quarantine an old Office component because legacy binaries can be difficult to classify.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any detection that identifies the Office installation directory or
xl8805.dll. - Check the detection details carefully.
- If the file clearly came from your original Office installation or trusted installation media, follow Windows Security’s Restore or Allow on device option.
- Restart Excel and test again.
Do not restore an unknown file merely because its filename matches the error. Microsoft warns that restored threats may be detected again. If the file was deleted rather than quarantined, reinstall Excel from trusted media instead of downloading a replacement.
If Windows Security repeatedly removes the file after restoration, stop using that copy and investigate the detection. The correct response may be to reinstall from clean original media, not to repeatedly disable protection.
Fix 5: Run Excel 97 with compatibility settings
Excel 97 predates Windows 10 and Windows 11 by many years. Even when the DLL is present, the program may fail because of changes in Windows architecture, security features, permissions, or system requirements.

First run Microsoft’s compatibility troubleshooter:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Troubleshoot.
- Select Other troubleshooters.
- Find Program Compatibility Troubleshooter.
- Select Run.
- Choose the Excel executable or browse to it.
- Follow the recommended test settings.
- Start Excel when prompted and check whether the error changes.
You can also test the executable manually:
- Right-click the Excel shortcut or executable.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose an older Windows version offered by the dialog.
- Select Run this program as an administrator only if the application requires it and you understand the permission impact.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Start Excel.
Compatibility mode may help the program launch, but it cannot recreate a missing file. If Excel still reports xl8805.dll, return to the original installation media and repair the application.
For critical legacy work, a supported virtual machine or an older compatible Windows environment may be more dependable than repeatedly replacing individual files. Keep old systems isolated and use them only for the software that requires them.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components when other programs also fail
xl8805.dll is not a protected Windows file. System File Checker is therefore not expected to recreate it. Run Windows repair commands when multiple unrelated applications are failing, Windows components are damaged, or the problem began after a broader system failure.
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test Excel again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows files. Neither command is an installer for Excel 97 and neither is expected to supply xl8805.dll.

If SFC reports that it found and repaired files but Excel still shows the same error, that result does not prove that the Office installation was repaired. Continue with Office repair or reinstallation.
Fix 7: Restore Windows after a recent change
If the error started directly after a cleanup operation, installation rollback, update, or system change, System Restore may return the system to an earlier state.
- Open Start.
- Type Create a restore point.
- Open the matching result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Review the affected applications and drivers.
- Confirm the restore operation.
- Restart Windows and test Excel.
System Restore can revert system files, installed applications, settings, and the registry. It may remove later changes, so read the confirmation screen before proceeding.

System Restore will not reliably replace a deleted Office file if the restore point does not contain the correct installation state. If the error remains, use the original Office setup.

Fix 8: Check the installation path and file presence
A file can exist but still fail if Excel is looking in a different directory.
- Read the complete path shown in the error, if one is provided.
- Open that path in File Explorer.
- Check whether
XL8805.DLLis present. - Compare the path with the Excel executable’s path from the shortcut properties.
- Check for duplicate Office directories.
- Check whether the installation is the expected language edition.
- Do not move the DLL to another directory just to satisfy the message.
If the file is present in the expected Office directory but Excel still fails, the problem may involve a damaged installation, an incompatible binary, a missing related component, or a 32-bit legacy application running on an unsuitable system. Reinstall the complete application instead of replacing one file at a time.
An error such as 0xc000007b, “not designed to run on Windows,” or an entry-point error can indicate a mismatched DLL or incompatible application. It is not proof that the file is simply missing.

Do not download a random copy
Random DLL download sites can provide malware, the wrong language edition, the wrong architecture, or a damaged file. A replacement may also hide the real problem, such as a broken Office installation or a quarantined file.
There is no current official Microsoft download page identified for xl8805.dll. Safe sources are the original licensed Office 97 installation media and the original application’s repair process.
Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64
The historical evidence places the file in the Office installation directory. Copying it into System32 or SysWOW64 can create path confusion and does not repair Excel’s installation.
The distinction between 32-bit and 64-bit Windows does not change the correct source. Excel 97 is legacy software, and installing a modern 64-bit runtime will not produce its localized Excel component.

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose missing-DLL repair command.
Do not run:
regsvr32 xl8805.dll
unless documentation for the exact application and exact DLL confirms that the file is a self-registering COM component. The available evidence identifies xl8805.dll as an Excel application component, not as a DLL that should be registered manually.

Do not install unrelated runtimes
Visual C++ redistributables, DirectX, .NET, graphics drivers, and Windows Features are not expected to install this old Excel file. Installing them will not fix an incomplete Office 97 installation.
Likewise, Device Manager is not the right place to repair this component. Drivers matter when a different executable reports a driver or graphics error, not when Excel requests its own missing lexicon component.
If the file was quarantined but the error continues
If you restored the file and Excel still fails:
- Confirm that the restored file is in the original Office directory.
- Check whether Windows Security quarantined it again.
- Verify that the Excel shortcut points to that installation.
- Run the original Office repair.
- If repair fails, uninstall and reinstall the complete application.
- Test with a clean Windows user profile.
- Review Event Viewer under Windows Logs and Application for the failing executable.
- Check the Office installation or Setup log if one was created.
Do not keep downloading replacement copies. Repeated replacement can leave a mixed installation containing files from different language editions or release levels.
Frequently asked questions
Is xl8805.dll a genuine Microsoft file?
The filename is consistent with a genuine old Excel 97 component called Microsoft Excel Lexicon. A file with that name is not automatically safe, however. Its origin, path, and relationship to the Excel installation matter.
Which version of Excel used it?
The strongest historical evidence concerns Czech Microsoft Excel 97, distributed as part of Office 97. It is not a normal component of current Microsoft 365 or modern Office releases.
Does it belong in System32 or SysWOW64?
No evidence establishes either Windows system directory as its correct location. The historical path is an Office directory beside the old Excel installation.
Why did it appear after upgrading Windows?
Microsoft documented a Czech Excel 97 failure after an upgrade to Windows Me. Changes made during older Windows migrations could expose compatibility problems in legacy Office installations. The historical workaround copied XL8405.DLL and renamed the copy XL8805.DLL.
Can I register it with regsvr32?
Not as a generic fix. The available evidence does not establish that this Excel component is self-registering.
Will SFC or DISM restore it?
No. SFC and DISM repair Windows components. They are useful when broader Windows corruption is present, but they are not installers for Excel 97 files.
What if Excel 97 still fails on Windows 11?
Run the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter, verify the original installation path, and repair or reinstall Excel from trusted media. If the software is essential, use a suitable isolated legacy environment rather than relying on repeated DLL downloads.

Confirm that you repaired the correct Office installation, that the language edition matches, and that the error names Excel rather than another executable. Then test with a clean user profile and inspect Event Viewer or the application log for the exact failure. Persistent compatibility problems may require a supported older environment.
